By the way, is that a custom detachable cord modification?

I'm thinking thats just an SDL slot...
It doesn't really matter whether item gets posted here.To be fair, an ebay search for "Model M" turns up over five thousand results.
I think everyone can go ebay and search "Model M".
Get out the popcorn indeed.Quite a while indeed. Do you think it clears one bitcoin in price?
What has it been, a year (or 2?) since one of these turned up on ebay?
I bet $650
I dunno man, normal SSK's have been going for $400 recently, would be surprised if this gets double that.
Well, it's up to $100 and we have another person doing the "bid every two seconds until I'm on top" just like with the recent fullsize industrial listing.
Well, it's up to $100 and we have another person doing the "bid every two seconds until I'm on top" just like with the recent fullsize industrial listing.
What you are seeing is automatic bidding from the person setting their 'max bid'. So if you bid and it's less than that persons max bid, it will automatically outbid you. It's not the person literally sitting there doing that.

Yes, it is. Or they're using an external tool.

You know some Canadians.....just bypass ebay, slip the guy some poutine and get a deal at the same time.
"Keyboard pulled from a working machine". Where the hell was this "working" - in a cow shed? Not only is the winning bidder going to be losing a lot of cash, but he'll be cleaning for quite a while. You know some Canadians.....just bypass ebay, slip the guy some poutine and get a deal at the same time.
You must not know many Canadians. Why do Americans always assume Canadians are eating poutine all the time? In my entire life, I've never eaten poutine, none of my family has and I've never actually seen another Canadian eat it. That's one of those myths, like Canada is covered in snow in summer, polar bears walk through major Canadian cities and everybody is calling each other a "hoser".

just gotta stay focused...
So my wife called a couple minutes ago and I told her about this keyboard. She said not a chance in hell are you bidding on that. But she said if I had a job where I actually used a computer all day she wouldn't have a problem with it. I guess that means I need to get my ass back in college.

Bro you can bid on it all day....just remember to stop before you get to $800 :P
The seller will never post a decent photo now.
This is a pretty unique industrial SSK because it has the blue caps. Too bad you can't really tell the condition of it with the crappy pictures. With better pictures to prove that it is indeed in good condition, it could fetch even more money for the seller.
I asked him for some less obscure photos - and this was his reply:
'I'm sorry I do not have any other means other than a camera phone. There are no deep scratches or cracks. It's just a little dirty. Sorry and thanks for interest.'
there are no DEEP scratches? does that mean that there are scratches?
can this guy be any more vague? He could easily just take it out into the sun where, even with a crappy camera, you could still get a much clearer view of the board.
what this tells us - it has scratches, basically, and he wants to take the most obscure photo to hide these defects.

I did not think that Lexmark made any detachable Model M's and what seems like free space on the edges is throwing me off.
It looks filthy and the pictures are terribly bad but... Is it normal that you can't even see the "numpad" numbering that SSKs typically have on the keys 789 / uio / jkl / m<> etc.?

Maybe it was working in an industrial environment.
Either way, these clean up easy.
Look at the regular Model Ms - if the industrials are going for 10x the price of the standards, this one going at double or triple would be entirely plausible.
Holy shnikies! It's up to $800.
I didn't know you folks were talking about this one. I'm the lunatic that boosted it to $800 (I was curious); I'm debating how high I want to go.
--> I know the present autobidder is set to $800.
And for the record, I'm surprised a lot of the new-comers here are shocked at the prices for these things. Webwit paid $800 or so for an Industrial F XT-- and just a few days ago one went for $51.
And what about the M15s that went for $1500?

I know the industrial Ms go for several times more than standard Ms. Everyone knows that. What I'm so shocked about is how much the price has risen for the standard models. Standard SSKs in fair to very good condition are regularly going for over $300 and up to $500 now. I bought a NIB for $140 and another in "like new" condition for $170 right around May or June of last year. One was found on Craigslist and the other was from Ebay.
I'm also surprised at how these auctions are being bid up very quickly when several days are left on them. It may weed out the less serious bidders but it also reduces the chance of you getting it a better price.
It's a very unique and rare board and in the current market $800 is a good price. I hope it stays there! I really want to see that puppy cleaned up like new...like Litster said.
EDIT: and I'm probably going to remove all of the blue keys except the arrow onesGive them to me when you do.
about the sdl: I cant see the pins at all (wrong angle). All I see are the the retention springs that help to hold the connector in place. There's a decent chance it's normal PS/2.
This auction shocks me. It's over $800 now. All we have here is a different colored plastic with some blue caps. It's later model SSK made by Lexmark, so it will not have as thick of a plate as older Model M's, and, consequently, a worse feel than earlier Model M's.
Then we have a nice bolt mod SSK available on Ebay for $325 flat, lower than the recent selling price, from a guy that loves Model's M, has done plenty of bolt mods, cleans them meticulously, offers a return period, and stands behind his product. It's a great board. You could buy it and paint the darn thing to the color of your choice.
And don't forget the lack of integrated numpad functionality!
about the controller, I think a normal model M controller will work. I haven't looked at an ssk matrix in depth though. You wont get the embedded numpad, but you won`'t have had that anyway.

I don't believe it does. This SSK I have right now lacks the numpad characters and I was told the numpad features didn't work. Like that industrial one, this SSK was also meant for some alternative terminal junk.

Yeah, it's a rarekeyboardstore special. Hacked together out of a fullsize controller with the rest of a terminal unit, and he obviously peeled the sticker off the nearest fullsize spare back he had which was itself also wrong.
And to the user (no longer active here, but maybe you're watching) who I acquired that from, none of the terms or implied terms of our agreement were broken by how EIBM got it from me.
As for the $900 nonsense, this is just silly. Some people have way too much spare money. I really hope for the buyer's sake that someone lost a couple hundred dollars inside it to compensate for grossly overpaying for such a mediocre item...

I knew it-- there's those german collectors. A german collector bought the full sized one. Could be the same guy now wanting an SSK. I hope he doesn't pull the auction to sell it to him.
Collectors are clocked in the head. Buying something to never use doesn't make sense. Especially model Ms since even one can basically last a person's lifetime without any maintenance....
If I get this thing, it's being connected to a very unique computer which is probably just as much as the stupid keyboard.

Since we are talking price here do you mind telling us what you think the fair market prices are (in general) for Model Ms? Standard, SSK, and Industrial variants assuming all are in good to very good condition. I've asked before in the "What's it Worth" thread with no help. It seems like not too long ago (within the last 2 years for sure) these were the prices:
Full size used: $40-$50
Full size NIB (from Clickykeyboard) $85-$95
SSK: $90-$170 tops on ebay

I know what they are currently going for. My point is that these current prices are way above what they were only a few months ago and that people need to stop paying high prices so the market comes back down to reality. It wasn't hard replacing the spring and the board was like new otherwise. Spotless actually.I know it wouldn't be, but some less experienced people aren't going to bid on something they don't know how to fix. I am sure not all the people who bid on old ibm keyboards possess the same knowledge and skill about keyboards as your average GH member.
You can justify the high prices all you want, but the fact is that they were going for half or less just months ago. Go search ebay and see what they sold for pre-August of last year. They were rarely over 200 unless NIB.I am not justifying the prices one bit.... I have been watching them for awhile as well and I can't believe how expensive they are getting recently...
What does welfare have to do with it?Hmm. If there is a lot of shill bidding or preemptive bidding, it could temporarily drive up people's valuations of the item, but assuming the winner isn't bidding more than his true valuation, you're just transferring more of the surplus to the seller. It might still be an efficient outcome assuming the person with the highest valuation gets the item.
What does welfare have to do with it? The current market prices have been artificially inflated by people overbidding early in the auction forcing people to overpay. The supply is greater than it has been in the last two years yet the prices are higher than ever. They are popping up for sale constantly on ebay now.Nobody is forcing anybody to bid more, that is their own decision to make. If someone can afford to pay the insane price these go for and they they are happy with it, that is what is going to happen.

I have never owned or sold an SSK before, I have no reason to say these prices are fair or that is what they should go for. But that is how it is right now I am afraid. The same goes for clacks as far as I am concerned. Many people say they sell for too much even though they still end up buying them for hundreds a piece, complaining about it isn't helping.
Although if you really want an SSK but won't pay the current prices you are pretty sol.
EDIT: And ebay is a terrible place to get an SSK, try taobao if you want to save a lot of money.

but at this price, why not make a custom case? All SS or titanium? Hum...
There you go!
An all-metal case for a Model M/F would be awesome. If aluminum, it could be anodized. I would get far more excited about that than a plastic industrial.

With $800, I'd rather buy another IBM 3278 beam spring with APL keycaps, an über clicky magnetic Univac F-1355-00 and a "super ALPS" magnetic reed switch keyboard. I'd probably still have money left over to buy my wife some flowers to apologize.
beam springs don't make the same sound as the Model F
I don't know, the beam springs don't make the same sound as the Model F buckling springs. I suppose they would be a lot more interesting if the solenoids fired with each key press.
Another thing that can be disturbing is the nonstandard layout. It'll require a lot more to tame than an F AT.
beam springs don't make the same sound as the Model F
I am always perplexed that people always talk about "sound"
For me, sound is generally a negative, "feel" is what is supremely important.

I *love* the variable spring resonance on Model F keyboards (and earlier Ms do it too, although not nearly as prominent). Each type you strike a key, you get a different frequency, and it can sound very nice having all of the springs shower a wave of different frequencies.
--> if all buckling springs were silent, the experience wouldn't be as invigorating. And with Model F switches, you can actually "feel" the spring under the key cap.
I mean, I don't deny that beamsprings feel good; but I probably wouldn't enjoy them as much. I personally think an industrial SSK is higher on the cool factor. *runs and hides*

With $800, I'd rather buy another IBM 3278 beam spring with APL keycaps, an über clicky magnetic Univac F-1355-00 and a "super ALPS" magnetic reed switch keyboard. I'd probably still have money left over to buy my wife some flowers to apologize.$800 will get you a superalps.... if you can find one.
My displaywriter has a plastic case, But it is the black sheep of the beamsprings.
That's another reason I'd go for a beam spring instead - thick metal case. (handy protection against heavy machine-gun fire)
the big question is, will it hit 1k$ ?
Quite a while indeed. Do you think it clears one bitcoin in price? With room to spare. Wow.
$1,100 was my max bid-- it was the german fellow that outbid me haha.
I bet if I put $2,000 he would have still went past that.

Was it snoopy? I recall him wanting one pretty bad :P
...overbidding early on...it may have gone for less otherwise. Way too much for me to spend but I'm sure the buyer is happy with their purchase.
Incredible! I didn't think it would have broken the $1k barrier.

I [could] have boosted the price far beyond that; but I don't think it's worth that much. That, and I really just want a square badge industrial 101 far more.

Could have? Bid what you are willing to pay. Anything else is stupid. Would've been fun to watch you just try to jerk the guy around only to get left holding the bag u didn't want.
Shill bidding is defined as "bids on an item with the intent to artificially increase its price or desirability" according to eBay. So, if you are bidding higher just to make someone else pay more you are shill bidding. It doesn't matter if you get stuck with having to pay for it or not.

It's only shill bidding if you're doing it in conjunction with the seller.

Technically, you are correct. What is it called when the seller is not involved? Bidding it up? I like to use the term "shill bidding" because of it's negative connotation.

That is perverse and psychopathic.
That is perverse and psychopathic.
That'll teach them to outbid me.
Oh, it's exactly the same as shill bidding. The only difference is which team you are on.
ha ha, who am I kidding. eBay doesn't enforce any of their policies.
That is perverse and psychopathic.
That'll teach them to outbid me.
Dude. All you're doing is artificially inflating the market, reducing the chances that you'll be able to buy one in the future at a price that you're more willing to pay.
Not only are you a spiteful psychopath, you're actively working at cross-purposes to your economic interests.s

I don't think I singlehandedly inflated the price of Yashica rangefinder cameras in 2001-2002, but then again maybe it was me.
I've been eBaying since 1998, so I'm probably okay.
It's only shill bidding if you're doing it in conjunction with the seller.
WTF?
People bid to a higher price than they are realistically willing to pay, just to prove a point, or cost someone else extra money?
That is perverse and psychopathic.

Wait, what?
You are 17?
