Post by: dodzylla on Fri, 24 January 2014, 05:33:55
Hello Guys!

I am a new guy here:) I want to build my own mechanical keyboard with blacklit, i tried to find topics about this, but i don't found.

So i write here some of my questions:

Where can i buy blacklit capable keycaps?
Where i have to order for parts?

Thanks, Dod!

Sorry if you have topic about this.

Is your aim to save money, or to gain experience?

If to save money - it will cost you a lot more to buy the parts and build a keyboard from scratch than it would to buy one ready-made.

If to gain experience, you might start looking in to the GH60, a 60% keyboard designed right here on GH.

There is also the sprit group buy which has everything to build your own. Check it out.

btw, it is called "backlighting", as in the letters on the keycaps being lit from the back as opposed from the front.
Keys don't have to be black. ;)
"Blacklight" is when you have a lamp that radiates just outside the visible spectrum. Some fluorescent material emits visible light when lit by "blacklight". I don't know of any such keyboard. Be aware that even though some of these wavelengths can not be seen and cause the iris to close, they can hurt the eyes. UV lamps often emit also a visible light as an indicator that it is lit.

I know there has been at least one group order of parts for a custom backlit keyboard, but I am not too interested in backlit keyboards so I don't know the specifics.

Where can i buy blacklit capable keycaps?

What layout do you need? ANSI or ISO?

Either way, search for Ducky Shine keycaps.

You can get ISO ones from Teraset (https://www.teraset.net/ducky.php) (Finland) which have a great customer service but high shipping rates.
qtan (http://stores.ebay.com/esportsgamingequipments/) (China) has ANSI ones in store (although the store is currently closed).

Yet, there are a couple of guys that have modified their ErgoDox'es to be backlit. I wouldn't call them n00bs. ;)
