Title: Swap my Poker II's Cherry MX Red with Clear MX
Post by: joneslee85 on Sat, 25 January 2014, 01:46:24
On Friday I received the a pack of rare Chery MX Clear from mechanicalkeyboard.com. Today I show my girlfriend how she could desolder switches from PCB. She was struggling with the stubborn holes with leads but after few hrs, she got the plate out of the PCB. She also figured out how to pull the swiches from the plate and now installing the Clear MX switches onto the plate. I'll show her how to do soldering and see the outcome.

Few pictures from today fun session.

P/S girls are into some thing like this so do not hesitate to suggest this as an activity for weekend

UPDATE: all switches are now soldered but failed the QA, the switches for [ key and Left Alt does not work, I even get my hand on this by replacing new switches but still not working, I am worried that she broke the diode (probably place the iron tip near the diode). Can someone please advice me how to troubleshoot? TIA

UPDATE: It is due to bad solder joint, resoldering those keys fixed the issue :) Now my gf is very happy! :)

so i like to solder as much as the next man but there is no way in hell my fiance would want to do this. no way in hell.

nice Round 4 SA set. i got the same one. love it. it is on HER pink QFR.  not that she cares about mech boards....

ah whatever. she never gives me grief for spending cash on this kind of ****. i am lucky. just not solder pal lucky.  :p :p :p :p

edit: clear switches are a little hard on me. you might want to think about throwing the springs from the reds into the clears.  ergo **** and what have ya.

"please aint nobody ****ing after her. i am out of here as soon as i fix the flux capacitor."

Learning to compromise, go shopping with her and ask her to share what you are into

The diode looks fine to me, should in replace with new diode?

You would have to test that diode using a multimeter to know for sure...

Most of the time physical inspection is not enough, especially for small components.

+1

Small components + bad eyes have proved this to me hundredfold.

Protip:
Usually girls are not into something like this...
They just pretend to be interested in ya hobbies because they love you and wanna spend time with you.
Usually this behavior ends after 1-3 years and they will go shopping or read magazines while you geek-out.
