Title: hand made palm rests. (and jp
Post by: lam47 on Fri, 20 February 2009, 17:03:29
Hey.
I have made the first prototype ;) of a wood and leather palm rest for the HH or any keyboard.
The cuts on this one are slightly more basic than the retail one as I wanted to keep it quite simple to try a few things out.
If people are interested I might be able to make them to order in any size you need.

The wood here is mahogany. The leather is real and about 2mm thick.
I have only done a quick finish on this one so a sealer coat of shellac and about 8 coats of hand brushed water borne lacquer.

What I normally do when I finish wood is fill the grain with lacquer and get a glass finish with rubbing compounds.

Anyway here are a few pictures.
I have not picked what to use as the feet yet either.
Bellow the rest are some joysticks I have made.

I hit enter by mistake which is why the thread title says and jp, not only did I miss the o in joysticks I hit enter going for BS.

:)

Wow!  Those are incredible!  I don't play fighters, but I need to try and find something I can contract you to build. :)

Nice. Good looking stuff.

Where did you get the art for the joysticks from? The dinner party scene is my fav, btw.

Lol, Happy Hacking? The first time that happened to me was when I was commenting on an ebay transaction. :D That was when I decided I prefer the traditional backspace layout.

The joysticks are beautiful. I think the first one is my favorite. The black one is .

Love the wrist rest. What is it what you want to try out? Personally, I'd prefer a matte finish, I think. I hope I have some money left when I'm back from my vacation because I want one. :)

thanks all.
The art is normally a character from one place then the backgrounds I make or find on the internet.
The ginger girl (who has been censored with a light effect) I drew for a customer.
I like to draw as much as I can but some people already have the art they want.

Like the one with the big Japanese sun he just asked to have ryu on it the do what I liked. So I went for a very bold design and made the sun in photoshop and illustraitor.

With the rests I want to try a different glue and make sure this one holds well.
Also I think the retail one has a another cut into the front.
I would need to see it from the top to be sure.

I can do a mat finish if that's what you like no problem.
a silk finish feels nice too.

Thanks for all the comments.

Wow, these are superb.  With the admittedly limited scrutiny of my intense staring they continue to appear to absolutely top notch.  Honestly yeah; wow!  Amazing work.

I hope to require some enclosures for electronics sooner rather than later (still just ideas right now, I must admit), so when I have some specifics worked out I'd be delighted to send you details if you'd be interested.

Sure I would be up for making some different things for sure.
The only issue is acquiring the right wood for the job.
I can do more with plexi too if need be.
Just enjoy making things in general!

also ever considered combining the xbox keyboard
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360messengerkit/
And building a keyboard onto the arcade stick using lots of cherry MX keyswitches? to create the ultimate wireless keyboard/arcade combo with whatever layout you want ;-).

Although to complete it add a kensington expertmouse and nice cushions under it for complete wireless experience

Ok I have been using this thing for a few days now and think it could do with a slope towards the front.
Any input on that?
Sandy or iMav you guys are first what do you think?

Laurie.
