Title: MMORPGs?
Post by: katushkin on Mon, 27 January 2014, 11:01:20: So I was just curious as to how many Geekhackers play MMOs, and what.

Personally, I have been playing EVE Online for about 6 years, and I'm falling out of love with it, I think for the last time, but I don't reckon I will pick up another MMO to fill the gap.

Any other capsuleers? Or anything else for that matter.

Nowadays one of my old GW mates nagged me into SWTOR, it's not all that great, but it helps to play with someone, and I love the quest dialogue system.

Post by: Skull_Angel on Mon, 27 January 2014, 12:59:47: Started with Final Fantasy XI and kept that up for quite a bit (pre-CoP to first Abyssea); I think what kept me around was the people and the story because the gameplay was actually pretty horrid.

Around the time I quit I got an alpha invite for FFXIV and tried to help the devs. make it a great game, unfortunately the number of retards with horrible requests along with a producer that didn't know up from down basically ruined the game's release. I still stuck around for the free trial and into the free-play period and met my current fiance.

When FFXIV went P2P we went MMO hopping through WoW (she use to play a bit), Rift and a few F2P Ariea titles, but settled on WoW for a while. We played WoW together with her brother and his wife long enough to get a few geared out chars and then heard FFXIV was going F2P again soon while it was undergoing new management and being revamped, as well as there being a "Legacy" deal going on where you get a lifetime discount for paying for a few months to help fund the overhaul (also a few game exclusives and she's nuts for vanity items, haha). So we met up with old friends and made new ones, found out that the game was in a decently playable state as of v1.32 (iirc) so we enjoyed it for a while.

Well, the new producer of FFXIV finally said "**** it, let's trash this heap and remake the whole thing." so the game went down and we went back to WoW. Mists of Pandaria x-pac came around and was actually pretty fun for leveling, but end-game was boring upon release; so we took a few chars to 90 and maxed some crafts while we played casually. Roll on down the road and we ended up getting beta invites for FFXIV: A Realm Reborn; first impression was "holy ****! every things different, but it's not?", big changes for the better while taking the basics and refining them.

Come release FFXIV:ARR was a new game; nothing really new, but highly polished and very enjoyable to play at any pace. We remade our linkshell (social group), created a free company (guild) and gathered up the old FFXIV crew as well as some new friends from beta. We're doing alright now, but things are slowing down and with the upcoming char. overhaul and x-pac coming to WoW we've thought of popping back for a look, haha.

I'm waiting for Wildstar, ArcheAge Online, Bless Online, and Black Desert Online to come out.

At one point I was playing at least 8 hours a day, mostly grinding rep to get raid stuff for the guild. (Attunments, mats, etc)

I was the druid class leader for one of the top guilds in the US at the time. #16th geared resto druid (In US) at the time ICC was released.

Was fun man, but now i have a job and college, so all that's over.

Still get nostalgia over it all the time though.

If you like EVE have you tried Darkfall Online? TBH I doubt any of the cookie cutter theme park MMOs (WOW, Elder Scrolls, etc) will appeal to you after playing a sandbox like EVE for that long.

Anarchy Online: Awesome character customisation and SO many items in the game. You could walk around busy zones and absolutely everyone looked unique. That's one thing very much missing from WoW, IMHO. The chars mostly look alike, not a lot of visual customisation.

WoW: Was fun for a while, but got bored level grinding and stopped playing when my son was born. Recently started playing again and it's much better, easier to level, more rewarding and I like the simpler talent "trees". The UI feels really dated (font rendering and scaling is bad, too much designed for smaller screens), cramped (field of view too narrow) and disjointed, though.

Guild Wars: It was okay... nothing really special IMHO. I liked the graphics of the start zone before the destruction, but none of the zones after that. None of the classes really appealed to me.

Warhammer: "WAAUUGH!" This was great, felt like the classes and races really had a lot of character and I enjoyed it a lot. Never got to endgame, however and this is apparently where it all fell apart. Not enough endgame content. Mork and Gork are sad.

SWtOR: Started from beta. Really enjoy this one. Feels a lot like a KoTOR 2 sequel (and I loved KoTOR 1 and 2). I play it mostly like a single player game. You even get to go back to some of the same places you visit in the KoTOR games and there are references to the characters. The setting and artwork really suit each other and having essentialy 8 story lines to play through is cool. I like the UI. It feels open and spacious and has all the relevant data in the same place, so it feels solid. It's nice to play in the Star Wars universe and now they have added space PvP :)

I still have my SWtOR subscription and recently resubbed to WoW due to friends in other countries playing it, so we can do some social gaming. Enjoying WoW again after getting over the shock of the old UI and cheesy style. And I can play my favourite race / class combination from Warhammer, Goblin Shaman! Finally seeing some high level content even though I get very little game time nowadays.

Post by: Av180 on Tue, 28 January 2014, 15:33:55: Hoping Blade and Soul will come to the west eventually, tried it in CN and couldn't get used to play it. Wildstar looks meh and so does ESO. Maybe Everquest Next will be good. Also the Repopulation. Not a few large pick of great MMOs out currently but hopefully some good ones come out this year.

I bought The Secret World a few weeks ago, I'm having casual fun, but this is mostly singleplayer and I don't intend to grind for HL content, I'm just enjoying the (awesome) story and quests.

they do it right or they did it first and you're used to it.
I think for me its the fact I don't feel like grinding the same stuff again in a new game, when i've already done similar mechanics in WoW and have achieved end game success. Something has to come along and give a new "feel" b4 I think WoW players will truly leave it for another MMO.

Tried out SWTOR, GW2, Warhammer aswell, neither really doing it for me.

if you played eve, can you explain to me like i'm dumb, the current war that just happened?

i think once you "playout" 1 mmo, it'd be nearly impossible to find the next "high".

i was the mt(maintank) of my guild, i was also the raid leader, my guild was also the top guild on the server for 2 years, coincidentally they became the top guild when my wife and i joined. also my wife and i combine, were the richest ppl on the server, this wasn't achieved from my guild, in fact no one in our guild or anyone for that matter knew we were "that" rich. (eq2 was able to rank every stat, and one of them was richest on server) No, we just ran the crafting/trading market, we inflated what we wanted, we drove our competition through the ground.

see, after this, it was going to be downhill, so we just left, and never played another mmo again.

we didn't try wow or the korean mmo's or vanguard or whatever, we just stopped, because we knew, nothing would top what we achieved. (my wife was also our main healer)

just give up mmo's, you'll never find the same "high" if you played 1 mmo for 6 years, especially if you were super hardcore, and not just some casual.

OK. The top two alliances in EVE, Goonswarm and Pandemic Legion, have been at war since Haloween. They formed two coalitions, Goon's CFC (consisting of Goonswarm and a few Russian alliances) and PL's PL/N3 (formed of Pandemic Legion and N3, inventive). Our alliances have been at loggerheads for a long time, for at least 2 years from what I can remember.

Now to make money on a large scale as an alliance in EVE, you have to do moon mining. This is only feasible if you control the sovereignty of the system where the profitable moon is. When you control the sovereignty, you pay a monthly bill in order to keep it. This is backed up by various structures floating in space.

Basically what happened, PL were controlling a very important system called B-R. This was also our staging system for this part of the war. For one reason or another, the sovereignty bill for B-R was not paid. Goons realised this and deployed ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING into the system to deploy structures and try to take the system sovereignty for themselves. This included dozens of ships worth thousands of dollars in real money, and hundreds of smaller ships too. Around 1500 players from the CFC came in to try and take the system. This was around 1500 GMT.

Unfortunately for PL, they had sent out a large contingent of their super expensive ships with an AUS TZ group of players to defend a few systems on the other side of the galaxy so they were unable to help. All hell broke loose and various PL leaders shouted across all channels to get everything logged on to defend B-R. At it's peak, there were a little over 2600 players in the system, with about half a million dollars worth of ships on the field of battle. Yes, HALF A MILLION DOLLARS.

So because of the huge weight of traffic in such fights, the game developers have introduced something called time dilation, which essentially spreads the lag so people with good internet connections aren't at an advantage. Time was running at 10% of normal pace, so needless to say everything was running at a pretty slow pace.

However, after 16 hours of fighting, over $300,000 of ships had been lost. The result was a resounding victory for the CFC, (one of the first times they have won a massive capital ship battle might I add) and the loss of the station in B-R. This meant that those from PL who had survived the battle could not get to their items that were stored in the station, resulting in a long round of diplomacy.

EVE has massive depth, but there is no ****ing way I want to sit looking at my computer for 16 hours doing pretty much nothing.

The days of old MMOs are gone, unfortunately. That doesn't mean that you can't play other promising ones and enjoy them and still be a hardcore player. I realize that the majority of new and upcoming MMOs these days are less than spectacular and most end up going the route of 1-3 month MMOs, but there are a few in the upcoming ones that look good.

Memories of good times that you had in MMOs are nice to reminisce about, but you'll be remembered for far longer if you create a legacy. This is something that several top MMO guilds that I've been with have done. They've all been top at one time in at least one MMO and were well known for it, but continue to play other MMOs and remain a recognized and competitive guild in those.

Met them the first time I did Hogger and I just went to one of their weddings this past summer :) I would NEVER play another MMO again. I played at least 8 hours a day, every day... it was awful.

Its Titan Quest 2.0 mixed with the darkness of diablo II, for those not familiar with the game. I guess its more of an ARPG right now, but multiplayer will be added in the future. Even though alpha is only 1 act long it shows alot of promise. My one main concern with modern MMO's are the stale items. "Woot found a sword with 20-100 DPS" :( boring. I'd rather find items similar to diablo, "Woot +10 cold damage/ 10%mf/ 50 psn damage over 5 secs" :D i love random multipliers. Definitly check out Grim Dawn gameplay videos, but dont drop the $30 on it yet, theirs just not enough content to justify the price right now.
