Title: Cooler Master QuickFire Ultimate not working on Mac OSX
Post by: cliffsun91 on Tue, 28 January 2014, 08:33:13
Hi all,

I recently bought a QuickFire Ultimate with Cherry MX browns and it's great! On Windows 7 at least...

When I'm on Mac OSX (10.9.1 and 10.8.5 both tested) the keyboard behaves weirdly. I''ll start off by mentioning that I know that Mac OSX can't handle NKRO, but even when I press the key combination to switch to 6KRO (I don't actually know if it's switched to 6KRO), it doesn't change the weird behaviour.

For example the Space bar and Backspace key do nothing, neither do the Arrow keys. When I press the 'E' key, the output is an 'e' followed by a space. When I press the 'c' key, it outputs 'c' but then moves the cursor back by one, essentially putting 'c' after the cursor.

The Num/Caps/Scroll lock LED's don't do anything and Capslock function-wise doesn't do anything (doesn't convert to typing in caps only), though in Logic Pro 9 it opens up the on screen (musical) keyboard which caps lock is supposed to do.

I suspect the problem might be to do with the key rollover but at the moment I have no way to tell whether pressing the key combination to switch KRO actually does anything.

Does anyone else have this keyboard (or the QuickFire Pro as I believe they are the same keyboard minus the full backlighting) and have similar problems in Mac OSX?

Yeah it's most likely the NKRO thing.  Try use a windows computer and switch to 6KRO then plug it back to Mac.

If you don't have access to windows computer try switch to 6KRO and un-plug and re-plug again and see if it help.

I've tried to switch it to 6KRO in windows and rebooting to Mac (It's on a dual boot Hackintosh). Does the keyboard store the KRO configuration on the board? Or does it store it on the computer? When I'm on Mac and I go to System Report it says its a QuickFire Ultimate N, in which I assume the N refers to NKRO. I'm not sure if that's significant in anyway though.

I have tried it on a Macbook Pro and had the same issue, just in case you were wondering if it was a problem with my Hackintosh OS.

A little bit more discussion here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46444.0).

I'm trying to remap the "00" button in a CM storm on Mac OSX to be a different button, as I find it useless as 00. Did anyone have any luck doing so? Programs such as BetterTouchTool unfortunately recognise it as "numpad 0", same as the normal 0 button.

Yeah thanks, I've seen that already but unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem. I was hoping that there was a special or different way to toggle 6KRO and that someone else who had this problem with their QuickFire Ultimate would be able to shed some light on it.

Thanks anyway, I appreciate it!

Mac OS X can handle NKRO, just not the way CM Storm does NKRO.

Well I used Aqua Key test to see if pressing the combination to switch to 6KRO was actually working (FN + Insert) and it turns out it does nothing. Pressing a whole bunch of keys (way more than 6) allows it to be registered still.

Again if anyone has a QuickFire Pro/Ultimate, does your keyboard also do this (or rather, doesn't do this...)?

FN + Insert is a internal keyboard mapping and doesn't send a scancode to the pc.
Call coolermaster support and ask them for help....

I've actually solved it now, the key combination that I was supposed to press wasn't made clear in the instructions or on the keyboard. It turns out that I had to have the FN button lock on (by holding it down for 3 seconds) and then I had to press N + Insert (N as in the 'N' key) to switch to 6KRO, so now it works on Mac OSX. When switching modes, the keyboard basically restarts (backlight turns off and none of the Scroll/Caps/Num Lock LEDs will light up) for a few seconds.
So I feel slightly retarded for not being able to figure it out (the instructions weren't wrong, they just weren't very clear...). Anyway, anyone else who sees this thread and couldn't figure it out like me at least will know what to actually do now.

Hi!

Thank you for keeping me from pulling out my hairs and go to Google's second page for a solution! :-)
