I don't know, $500 for a previous-gen ultrabook-spec machine sounds pretty damn good.
-
it is.
people just think it's an oddly shaped ipad for some reason.
-
I have one and I freaking love it. With my poker, it becomes the only 'laptop' with a mechanical keyboard!
-
even though it's got bad battery life...
This thing is still ultra-beast compared to most other android/ios tablets.
remember this is a full featured i5
-
Yep, I can hook mine up to 1080p monitor, external keyboard, mouse, and it's a full-featured i5 PC. Grab it and go and it's a powerful tablet. Expandable memory via micro SD cards.
-
remember this is a full featured i5
fully featured ultra-low-voltage i5
I compare the surface pro directly (and favorably) to the macbook air. It's a great little machine.
-
Dang. Was looking to sell mine, now it seems I'll have to take a severe hit on it :( oh well
-
This deal caught my eye as well. Also available at Microsoft stores and probably a few other places.

still.. "fully featured".. no cuts besides frequency..
even at it's low frequency, compared to say whatever's in a nexus 7, this is like a watermelon vs a raisin
-
i wish people would stop comparing everything that is rectangular to an ipad or ipad competitor.
x86-64, a REAL ssd (no emmc ****), an actual os, frequencies and ipc that is an order pf magnitude higher in rl situations.
it's like comparing an ipad to a chipmunk. you need to lay off the crack and read a book kinda thing

I really need to find a way to get in on this. I've been wanting one since they were announced. Plus, this is better than any other Tablet OR laptop in its price bracket.

We got a Surface Pro for my mom-in-law for Christmas, she loves it. Mostly using it for Skyping, but it's perfect for a nice small tablet she can slip into her handbag, and the built-in rest is a thoughtful addition. I'm seriously tempted to get one to use with the upcoming GH60.

We got my aunt a little Asus atom Tablet, and it was a nice little thing when I was helping her set it up. This should, in theory, be even better. It also has some cool features, like the Wacom pen.

When I look at the things I use a computer for: everything I do is easily within the capabilities of the surface pro. The things that require more power are games, CAD, etc. and these things are more properly done on a desktop anyway.
I submit that that surface pro / good desktop combo is ideal.

What's kinda sad is it's more powerful than my current laptop.
This thing can also do some gaming. You aren't going to play Battlefield 4 on it (the Surface Pro 2 can, though), but you should be able to do stuff like Source engine games and Civ V.

I'm just not sold on the metro interface or the angle Microsoft was going for on these. It sounds like good hardware, but I just want a tablet to be a tablet.

In my personal opinion, Metro works for a tablet quite well. Wouldn't dare use it on a desktop with a keyboard or a mouse, though.
I feel like, in my quest to replace this piece-of-**** notebook I have now, this is something to consider, but size is my main concern. I'm on a 13" notebook now, and it is a little big, but I'm not sure how the benefits would outweigh the cons of this as a notebook replacement. Can anyone here comment on its feasibility in that respect?

surface rt and windows 8 tablets are basically netbooks done right. for regular folk, a desktop offers absolutely nothing.
the perfect home office is a 10" tablet connected to a monitor with a usb hub connecting the keyboard and mouse. when they're tired of the desk, they can bring the tablet to the living room.
one device; every usecase

how could you get "tired" of the desk... this is the best place in the house...
I haven't sat on a couch in years... Why would I ever want to do that....
