Title: Cherry G80-0349
Post by: lowpoly on Tue, 24 February 2009, 07:56:41
A friend here at the office threw away old computer parts from the eighties and this is what I could rescue:

It has been here all the time during the last ten years or so and I didn't know it.

The label inside says it is a Cherry G80-0349. It has the old open switches with shorter travel. They are linear and squeak a bit, probably because they're old.

Wow. Simply amazing. Looks like it's from another century. Probably the rarest G80 on earth. :)
Is it PC-compatible?

It looks like it's from another millennium!

This finally clicked for me; it's been a crappy morning.  That's hilarious.

Not this one. There is a larger version with numpad that was available for the PC as well. Probably XT though.

Is that a straight ASCII keyboard?

If so, probably easier to adapt to AT or PS/2 than XT is... alternately, you could probably hang it off a parallel port.

Dang. I want a board (that I can use with a modern PC) with brown keys so bad. :) Nice find!

I don't know myself. I could probably find an answer with some effort.

Keycaps with this shape are still available from Cherry. Maybe just ask them what colors they have.

D*mn.  I'll have to wait until I get home to see the pics.  They are getting blocked here at work.  D*mn Websense.

Do the keycaps fit current model MXs?  The crosspoint stem piece of the keycap doesn't look very deep...

Can't try it right now but those keycaps are in the current MX .pdf. Keycaps with that shape at least.

It's nice to see a Cherry keyboard with the M81/M84 switches. Does the larger version have linear or tactile?

I tried it, they fit. The keycap connector is shorter than on modern MX keycaps but it allows for a secure connection.

The characters on the keys correspond to those on a (German) bit-pairing ASCII keyboard, so I would think the keyboard is very likely to be a straight ASCII keyboard.

Don't put it on your web filter. This thing just does what your boss is asking it to do. You are lucky it is only blocking the pictures. You can still read the articles.

Our corporate rules are banning almost all forums.

No no honey, it is not what you think. I'm not on geekhack (aka playboy for keyboard freaks) for the pictures... I'm only there for the text.

Yeah yeah... Tell the truth, you have a thing for naked keyboards.
