This is a long shot but have the admins considered using forum software like Discourse? http://www.discourse.org  Here's a project that uses it for their forums: http://forum.openframeworks.cc/categories

The list of features is impressive. The significant ones being:

• Pretty nice mobile UI
• Better scrolling through a particular thread instead of clicking on several links for pages in a long thread
• You get notified when someone mentions you in a thread
• Provides an API

It's still being actively developed but a number of high profile sites have migrated their forums to it, namely Ubuntu http://discourse.ubuntu.com and Boing Boing http://bbs.boingboing.net Anyway, just a suggestion even if it's farfetched.

That isn't the point. Some of us dislike Javascript chewing up processor resources. It's just a bloody web site.

It is the point though. You would be hard pressed to find any major site that does not utilize JavaScript in 2014. And given how much people spend on keyboards on this site one would assume that the majority of users have computers that contain processors manufactured in the last few years so a JavaScript app won't bring their computer to its knees. Either way it's a moot point since none of the site admins have replied to the suggestion meaning it won't gain any traction.

Major sites using JavaScript dies not make it a good idea. My box supports JavaScript just fine. I would still much rather be without it.

I'll put my vote in as another no - they have the right idea for layout and functionality, but JavaScript (or any client side scripting) should not be used for core functionality.

no, why go through the pain of another forum transition? only to go with BETA software?

smf is up there along the lines of vbulletin/IPB and even the bloated but popular phpbb
