i've moved this to great finds from group buys because although it's about group buys, it's not technically a group buy :P

It's like any other group buy forum, but you know it'll be legit!

After what's been going on lately, I think I like it.

Pretty sure geekhack owns the legends so they'd need to ask permission IIRC.

By the looks of it it's just SP trying to profit some from other people's group buys while the person who submits the idea has to deal with any added orders that come through SP.  It's an interesting choice since it seems like it would make SP liable if anyone does a runner and doesn't deliver.

I checked it out because I was interested in seeing if it would be an easier way of running the key cap group buys I'm looking at maybe doing in the future, but you have to register as a merchant to do so on their site.  Not really worth it to me unless SP gets paid directly and they pay for all the shipping labels, making it so you can print them off from home.  I suspect the former may be true, but not the latter.  At least it helps eliminate added charges for Paypal fees.

As a brief introduction, this is how the process will work.

- Group buy leaders will still be in charge of designing key cap sets. They will also help in promoting these sets. As a group buy leader you will have the opportunity to design the entire key set, set the minimum order amount (aka tipping point), max # of purchases, and max # of purchases per person.

- Once a deal is submitted, a member of the Signature Plastics team will log in and enter pricing details. This will include group discount thresholds and shipping options. Group discounts will start based on the minimum purchase number you, as a group leader, decide on.

- Once a deal is closed, Signature plastics will manage the collection of all funds as well as individually shipping orders for each participant.

- We will allow shipping outside of the US. Also individuals participating in group buys will have the opportunity to earn additional discounts by sharing the deal. These discounts will be limited and only apply to their individual purchase.

Thanks.  Why they decided to hide that in the forums is beyond me.  If they're doing all the work, I'm not sure why they need store name and so on listed.

So I'm guessing there will be a flood of SP group buys now.

I know I'll be doing one of my typewriter sets soon because of that since it means I won't have to worry about the tax issues.  There's also the added benefit of not having to sort and ship.

At the same time, it makes things a little worse for GH since I know some people like to build in a donation to GH in their price.  That and I know some people like to do them for profit and eliminating themselves as the middle man while still doing the design work and promotion work and only getting a single key cap set out of the whole process might disenfranchise them from using that tool.

Hmm, probably. With GMK dropping MOQ and this, things could get very interesting.

That's just what I was thinking. I wonder if it'll be the year of the keycaps. Or if we'll have so many sets running at the same time that we will never hit MOQ on anything.

I think this could be a very good thing for getting group buys done.  Mostly since SP is the entity handling the money collection and the shipping (which I would assume sorting as well).  So this could in essence speed up the entire process as well.  Would also help out people across the pond wanting to conduct GB's.

It stops the constant pushing back of deadlines as well because I'm guessing once the design is submitted and priced SP will want people to stick to their guns.

Hopefully this helps lead to GBs that otherwise wouldn't have happened.

Curious about their international shipping prices...

I'm not sure what to think of this, Sure i see the advantage of SP, the source, running their own group buys.

but on the other hand how are they going to get high participation in their group buys? are they going to be more active on GH, DT, OTD, KBM, etc etc etc? i mean one of the advantages of group buys on geekhack, when run by good people, has been the involvement of all the communities internationally leading to great prices (retro, round n, etc).

I mean if we have a bunch of <=25-order group buys that doesn't sound like a great find/deal; that means you have a bunch of SP-quality sets for a higher price than GMK quality sets.

Sure there have been some group buy issues lately, but SP cap group buys have been pretty successful lately. Plus things are better handled internationally when run by the community.

edit: i just re-read the mission statement of the SP group buy page someone quoted later in this topic, i just realized the whole "group buy leader" concept and how they are doing things. though i still have valid concerns.
