Title: I nearly lost an eye today.

There is no other word for it.

I was working on the palm rests I know some of you are waiting for.
Well 3 have been cut and were ready to have the chamfer added to the front.

This is done with a router.
I have my router mounted upside down under the desk and the chamfer bit sticks up through a hole.

I had just put a new one in and tightened the chuck.

Im cutting away and it flies out of the router!
This is an inch across piece of steel with a cutting blade on either side.
Still spinning in the air it cuts into my face just to the side of my eye.

I am so lucky it did not go in it as it would have gone through the eyelid and into the eye for sure.

I will from now on wear goggles at all times.
No exception!

There may be a delay on the rests until I have sorted out the router.
Its a dewalt which are normally very good.

Looking at the messy cut and the scorch mark I think it could have been in crooked but I am not sure how.

I have steri stripped it together and its a bit painful but not too bad.

Im going to buy some good goggles tomorrow.
No work till then.

I find they compromise my sight on detailed stuff so I will look for some high quality ones.

Beyond the glasses, I'd definitely check to make sure that the router itself is functioning properly like you said. If you did properly tighten the bit in, it should NOT have flown out. Seriously... I get goosebumps even thinking about a router bit flying through the air.

yeah ear protection when sawing & stuff is a must that stuff is so loud.

That hitting me would have scared the crap out of me O.O

I know some of the DIY shops around here do sell high quality protective eyewear using optical grade polycarbonate for the lenses, and they are aroung $50 - $60. For the type of you do and your saftey, they would be well worth it.

There was this piece that looked like the letter H. For whatever reason I wanted to break it down, I went at it with a hack saw but couldn't cut all the way through.

So I started twisting the 2 vertical pieces of the H, back and forth, almost there...
It snaps, the right vertical piece now has the sharp end of the horizontal piece, -l which
flys back to my head. It was about an inch or so from my left eye. It broke the skin on my farhead. And it hurt quite a bit. I would have lost my eye for sure if it had made contact.

Thankfully, none of my neighbors saw this, I was so retarded.
People at work said the cut looked like the lightning bolt on Harry Potter.

So yeah, when in doubt, wear eye protection, and gloves if need be.
Its not like I can go down to Wal-Mart and get a new eyeball : )

Post by: Eclairz on Mon, 02 March 2009, 17:45:07: I haven't done wood work in ages but heard lots of horror stories. Anyway goggles always got in the way but i would always wear them just in case. Lucky you had a great escape and lived to tell the tail, must sting like hell though.

I'm not too bothered by cuts to be honest.
I used to partake in Downhill racing then BMX flatland so am used to surface wounds.
I don't like it when there is something wrong and you cant see it because its inside.
Currently I am suffering from something and not knowing exactly what is horrible and frighting.

I have some good goggles now so hope to get back in the shed soon and get some rests made (and joysticks)

Again I appreciate the concern :) XX
