I haven't smoked in a while though.
Actually, this sums it up for me.

Smoker here but I want to quit this year if I try out for cornerback, training has been killing me. Smoke way less these days at least since I quit drinking.

Man I used to love those Ice Blasts, they stopped selling them in Australia though so I went back to rolling. Helps with the money too, tailor made cigarettes run like $20 a pack here :/

How old are you guys that smoke flavored cigarettes? It sounds like something marketed to kids. Anyway, I quit smoking about 10 years ago and smoked for at least 10 before that. Marlboro "reds" and American Spirit regulars. http://www.liquorlockerla.com/wp-content/uploads/American-Spirit-Full-Bodied-Taste-Blue.jpg

...that's where I got my nickname, ;).

my wife worked for PM for about 6 years, it was actually why we moved to the nice horribly redneck state of virginia. Even then tho, this company imo was very progressive, at least in taking care of its' employees. For instance (this is in 2001) they allowed your partner healthcare as long as they lived in the same address as you for 6months. Whats this mean? and why was it worded so funny? they tried to allow their gay employees to give benefits to their partners by just using a "living in" rule.

They also probably have the best dental plan, as in 99% covered, but i'm pretty sure thats because they want their own employees, who happen to use their own products to have nice white teeth. (they covered my wisdom teeth removal easily)

They also have this september event (i think?) where they rent out kings dominion, a theme park, that's right they rent out the whole damn park for the day, and employees and their families are allowed in.

Not only that (they stopped this recently) but they used to give each family member $20 vouchers as well (for food/games)

This has RUINED, ANY enjoyment i can and forever will have at ANY theme park since. Imagine not having to wait in line for anything (or at most 5minutes) and if you want to go on the ride again, you basically run back and just ride it like nothing.

They also have cigarette dispensing machines, i forget if it was either 1 a week or 1 pack a day you can get for free with a badge swipe.

ANYWAY, my wife is an engineer, so she was in the process from leaf (she actually went out to the farms and harvested and dried crops, since she was engineering a new "strain") to final product...

she even has a patent on a process (a team patent), i of course will not say much...

but with what i know, you couldn't pay me enough to smoke a pack a month for life.

This pisses me off with that article, sure he quit at age 52ish (he's 82 now) but

"Nimoy, who told an interviewer last year that he flunked chemistry in high school, may not have grasped the long-term risks associated with smoking,"

were ppl that dumb 30 years ago? i mean really did you think that inhaling something burns would turn out good?

I quit about 14 years ago, and it still causes me to reach into my left chest pocket for them after a meal or drink.  I use to smoke Winfield Reds and tried rolling cigs for while.  Liked Port Royal for some years but later got lazy with making them.  Although they always went well with some single-malt whiskey  :thumb: .

I sometimes crawl the walls at night screaming for some......... but the mrs always knows what to do to relieve my craving......

Smoke what? Tobacco? Ganja? Need to be more specific...

Been smoking for about 1.5 years.  Should never have started, but too late for that now...

Marlboro Edge, Marlboro NXTs, Mavericks, Parliments, Pall Malls; pretty much if it's a cigarette, I'll smoke it.

I was like you Matt. I started smoking regularly by the time I was ~15 and was up to 2 packs a day of Marlboro Reds/AS Regulars by 17/18. I can't remember exactly when I quit but it was right around when I was 25/26. I tried cutting back but that never worked out...because I was still smoking. I was just kidding myself by cutting back. In reality I didn't want to quit. One day my doctor told me that I wouldn't make it to 40 if I didn't get my **** together (I had already been on blood pressure meds for a couple of years from smoking.) So, one day I just stopped smoking...completely. Was it hard? Hell yeah! After the first month it got easier. By the third month the cravings were just about completely gone. That was ~10 years ago and I never have cravings at all.

There is more to it that just the chemical dependence. You will also need to work on the ritualistic aspect of it too. Which was probably harder for me. I loved to smoke while driving, etc...

You've got to be kidding, I still get the rampant need to light up.  Usually after something strenuous or enjoyable.  Plus seeing other idiots around me light up continuously doesn't encourage temperance in this area.

Nope. In the last 10 years I have tried about 2 cigarettes while out drinking with friends just to see what it was like to smoke after so long and they just about made me sick. I truly think they are disgusting now. Others smoking around me doesn't bother me though.

Not sure where you are, but American cigarettes are super disgusting now... for the last few years at least they have had some fire retardant chemical added to the papers which make them taste mega terrible. It's one of the other reasons I started buying from Eastern Europe as they don't do that... also they are so much cheaper it's not even funny. Can buy entire carton for price of 1 pack. Only downside is making sure to plan ahead and order at correct interval so I don't run out.

I can also attest to that. Those fire safe cigs are really terrible.
Although, I personally favor Japanese cigs and ironically lucky strike which isn't produced into the USA anymore bar the unfiltered lucky strikes.

I also bought a few cartoons from Eastern Europe, they are cheaper but some of those are stale  >:D
I think the best way is to buy cartoons at the duty free shops or ask your friends to do it when they go abroad.

I realize this is a bit; nah who am I kidding; very off topic but than again this is the place for that right?

I broke my foot last June and went to Hershey park in august. Yes I was on crutches so they gave me a wheel chair to get around with, but I got a "disabled" pass which allowed me, and up to 3 people who were with me, to get on any ride without waiting in lines. At the time I went, the lines were easily 1 hour or longer for a single 5 min roller coaster ride. Because of my pass I was able to go on with my friends without waiting. This was awesome but at the same time kinda ruined any future amusement park trip I will ever go on. That said I will always remember it. SO Cool

You're lucky. I only smoked for about 5 years and only got to just over half a pack a day. I've been quit for almost as much time as I smoked for and still crave it. The odd part is, I didn't find quitting that hard (I used the patch) but yet here I am still getting the urge to smoke quote often.

that means you haven't really quit. your body haven't developed disgust for cigarette smoke. real giving up cigarettes makes you feel like in the middle of the hentai rape for the first months. but then your system changes. it feels like it never wants this poison again.

The smell of cigarette smoke in the air and on my clothes is repulsive now. I worked with a girl who had quit for over 20 years after smoking for at least 20 and she told me she still can't look at someone smoke without wanting to smoke herself. I quit on my 10th year from when I started smoking and I am going strong for 6 months already and it seems like an ethernity. My country has a very high quality tobacco and a very big industry around it so it is very cheap and the majority are smokers, the most expensive ones you can find are Marlboro and Davidoff which cost like ~$2-3 and the  cheapest can be for maybe 50 cents per pack. Quitting is not easy especially when you have smoked more than 3 packs a day...

The first week I quit I did many things just to set my mind off of it. I walked my dog 9 times a day, exercised, eat more than usual, drinking helps (not alcohol). Try to stay as stress free as possible, by that I mean avoid situations which can lead to stress (for me gaming, yes I rage at myself which led to a cigarette after every ladder game). I parted ways with coffee too, it was my usual morning thing - coffee + cigarette. The first month or two are the hardest to get through, after that it will become daily routine and you will start to hate the smell too. GL

Yeah I have to say seeing my dad quit smoking when I was growing up really had a positive effect on me. I really don't have the urge to try cigarettes. I imagine it would've been very different if he smoked secretly and tried to hide it from me.

Sure, all the nicotine is long gone from your system and therefore the physical addiction is gone. But who's to say that a mental addiction can't be just as powerful? Maybe even more powerful for some. Hell, that could potentially last a lifetime. I guess what I'm saying is that for some people, the mental addiction of smoking cigarettes could long outlast the physical dependency of nicotine and never go away. It's not that insane really.

what you described looks much like an ex heroin addict. they say if you try heroin for once, then a demon will sit on your back forever. (that's not entirely true by the way). i don't say that what you say is unrealistic or impossible. i say that it is insane :p twenty years is an adult age!

But addiction could be considered a form of insanity. Your mind keeps telling you that you "need" something when in reality, you're better off WITHOUT it.  So I agree, in many situations the mental addiction is just as hard, if not harder, to overcome than the physical addiction.

Not the first time I've heard the cigarette/heroin comparison in terms of addictiveness.

Also I think there are some physical aspects that tie into the mental as well. Things like, smoking after a meal, on the way to work, etc. I've tried replicating the smoking by using pens and even cinnamon sticks but it just isn't that same feel at all.

The closest thing I've found as an alternative to smoking that mimics the feel for me are to load up on the Listerine breath strips. The ones that dissolve on your tongue. I'll pop like 2 or 3 of those in my mouth and take in deep breaths. Cool mint flavor works the best

i used to munch sunflower seeds.
smoking habit was really bad on me. first cigarette in the morning was the best thing in all day, and i had to deal with it. plus almost every evening i used to walk around the neighborhood with my friend, lighting up a cigarette always in certain places. after giving up smoking, i continued these walks and without cigarettes it was like pure torture. sunflower seeds helped a little.
