Title: Music
Post by: Protato_Tubby on Tue, 11 February 2014, 18:17:01
Does GeekHack play an instrument? I play the tuba in an orchestra, brass band, brass quintet and a concert band.  I also teach brass. I'm interested to hear what you lot play, if you do. Also, exchange of musician jokes ( I can say this one 'cause my brother plays guitar):
Q: What do you throw a drowning lead guitarist?
A: His Amp!!!

That's genuinely sad.I'm not sure if this will work as well for the trumpet but with NY tuba I occasionally rest a fusion on the bell and I can puff as hard as I want and it'll stay quiet. I suppose you could hold one to the bell, but not too hard so it won't hurt your teeth :s

I used to play the alto sax in high school.

Let's face it, soprano sax is better:
^ can't find the high quality version of this.

On a more serious notes, alto sax sucks in a concert band environment.
I also hate having to ****ing change reeds every 2-3 weeks.
That's the worst **** when you don't have an income in high school.

Too late now... It's been in the closet for some time now. Bought it back in the 3rd grade, for $350. I'll edit this post later when I find out which manufacturer lol.
 [Edit] Found it.

I play the fool... does that count?

Actually, a little bit of guitar (12 string acoustic and electric) and bass guitar (6 string... seems I like a lot of strings on my instruments). Played drums a bit, too.

Used to play the alto sax, switched to the baritone sax my junior year in high school.  Barry sax was so much more fun to play (although not when marching).

The I graduated and haven't touched an instrument since...

I can appreciate not liking marching with a baritone sax. Marching with my BBb Tuba suuuuuuuuucks.

Wow! Lots of brass players on GH. Drummers, too, it seems.

I wish I had learnt an instrument in school (properly, as in taking it as a subject). I tried to learn mouth organ / harmonica (one of my dad's friends could play one well), but got nowhere. Tried keyboards, got nowhere.

I started learning guitar (on a 12-string  ) in my final school year (grade 12 equivalent I guess) and picked it up really fast (surprising considering my previous efforts). In college I was in a little punk band with some friends and we all decided to try switching instruments.

I became interested in drums and started learning. Bought a kit and practised a fair amount, but didn't improve much :(

Switched to bass guitar. Similar story to drums, although a little better. Still can't jam on the instrument, though, which I consider to be a telling sign.

Back to guitar now. It just feels more familiar and comfortable than the others. I don't regret trying the others, though. Gave me a much better understanding of what's going on in a song.

I'd rate my skills as: Fool, Guitar, Bass, Drums.

You should probably get new reeds if you're gonna try.
