Title: Ashtray
Post by: ianxblog on Fri, 14 February 2014, 21:18:23
There are a few keyboards with fans to cool your hands when gaming (Thermaltake)

Why there isn't a keyboard with a detachable/slide-in*out ashtray.
It would kickass for office use.

ROFL.
Hahaha.

Well, on a more serious note, smoking near a keyboard really ****s it up in the long run among other things.

Smoke screws up a lot more than just a keyboard.  I had to replace the CPU fan on my mother-in-laws personal computer.  She smokes in her house probably a pack to 2 packs a day.  The fan was so gummed up with tar and what not that it just wouldn't spin.  The amount of fuzz and dust was actually pretty minimal.

I had to do the same thing with computer from the office at private club that my mom worked at for a bit.  This was before the IA Clean Air act that banned smoking in all public buildings.  After those to I will not do hardware swaps for people that smoke consistently in the same building/room as said computer.  After fixing the second one from the club it took 3 days to get the smell out of my house.

This is on top of the fact that I smoke but never in my house.  Yes I go outside to smoke at my own residence even when it is -40°F without windchill.

In retrospect I don't think it would be a good idea.  Just because you can, does that mean you should?

The SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) computer, belonging to the US Air force, built to analyse radar signals, had a built in ashtray and lighter.

It was in use 1954-63.  So if you smoke, you're living in the wrong decade.

(My gf bought me a coffee table book called core memory, full of fantastic photos of computers from the 40's upto 1984, and tacked on some photos of google's first server.)

PS - moved your post -  ;)

They really don't make things like they used to.
