TRANSMISSION START:
Hello fellow Geekhack members. I come from the planet of MODEL M, a distant utopia that like so many others met tragic demise through lack of caution and overconfidence in a terrible sticky sweet lemon doom (aka I managed to kill my model M with a glass of lemonade. :-[)
My search for a new paradise has lead me here, I searched from ALPS to CHERRY to UNICOMP and at last have found a suitable new home - here, with the haven of my own kind.
I enjoy sushi, white alps, buckling springs and romantic sunsets.
If you want to contact me, please do. I could use the social interaction.

Previously on X-COM...
Hello, commander. In response to the alien threat, this council of nations has chosen to activate the XCOM project. You have complete command of XCOM headquarters. You must learn more about the enemy to expand our capabilities, and the abilities of our operatives.
Good luck, commander.
Now the conclusion.
Dear Unknown Alien,
As the commander of an unknown, secret government agency that reports directly to a mysterious council consisting of a bunch of wankers that are harboring exalt operatives and a bald headed dude, it is my privileged and honor to invite you into our secret facility.
During your stay you will be subjected to a luxurious amount of time in a specially built alien containment facility. As your host, I can guarantee that you'll be subjected to all forms of torture and interrogation by our very own world, renown Dr. Valen. You'll witness our most secretive, controversial and cutting edge techniques firsthand! Once you've unfortunately expired after spilling your guts - hehe - you'll be treated with upmost respect as we disect your body for further examination.
Book your reservation today! This is limited opportunity - you never know when the silly council will disavow us for political reasons. First come, first serve!
Sincerely,
Commander, X-COM HQ.

Welcome to GH!
I dunno if lemonade can kill a Model M. They are like tanks. Or zombies. Or zombie-tanks. Somebody here prolly can fix it for you. Or maybe just buy a new keyboard. Or buy a bunch of new keyboards. Or do the smart thing, and buy an HHKB Pro 2 Type-S right now, and be done with it. You won't need another keyboard for the rest of your life.
But srsly, I would try to get that Model M working again.

Sadly lemonade did kill my model M. From what I've read online and around geekhack the liquid damages the membrane or something like that. It was an old one that didnt have drainage holes. The LEDs still function though, kind of weird... If anyone has any ideas on how to fix it that would be great. My baby would live again! :)
I've already purchased a nice unicomp pc122 as a replacement. No complains there.
eth0s, I did a little bit of research and HHKB are overpriced as hell ($350 for a little 60 key compact?!) - not to mention that all the ones I saw were topre. It's a supposed to be a nice switch but it's too light for me - I loved harder ones like cherry greens, BS and alps. But it looks like a nice compact keyboard, an cool design.
-
Probably wouldn't be hard to get the M working again. I spilled the entirety of a brand new steaming hot cup of coffee into my Space Invaders board. At which point I just opened the case and hit everything with hot water, keys and PCB included. Then I just let it sit in pieces for a few days and it was not only perfectly fine afterwards, but also cleaner.
Edit: Course, it has no membrane at all, that might be a stumbling point. You may have to do a bolt-mod, probably worst-case.
-
That would be my suggestion as well. Do a bolt mod and clean carefully as you go.
-
You guys, know what you're doing, great! Can anyone send me a link on how to do a bolt mod and tell me what tools I will need? Thanks everyone.
-
Check out this thread. I haven't bolt modded myself yet, but I have a 1390131 I'd like to do it on, and I'm planning to use this method rather than the "traditional" nuts-and-bolts version.
