Title: Custom keycap set
Post by: bktlr on Mon, 24 February 2014, 13:48:27
Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum :D

I'm making a custom keyboard with my friend with this layout:
http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/layouts/93a1796de8593c80a5d07c1323ad273c
which will have these keycaps (the ones in blue): http://imgur.com/pZwDQ4R

Is there any shop where I can get only those keycaps and not a whole set? I emailed wasdkeyboards.com and asked them but I haven't gotten a response yet.

Little bit about the keyboard: It's going to be used for playing counter-strike. We wanted to make a smaller keyboard to make it easier and a bit cheaper so we came up with this idea. The case will be 2mm aluminium that we'll cut in a CNC machine.

Thanks! Hopefully I posted this in the right section.. :)

Welcome to Geekhack.

For a small (or single) run with custom keycaps WASD is probably your best bet.

The keyboard you are designing sound interesting - perhaps you could post more details in the making stuff together! (http://geekhack.org/index.php?board=117.0) section.

Yeah it seems that WASD is the only way to go, except buying the 21 keys I need costs almost as much as getting a whole set of (cheaper) keycaps. For the first run I might aswell buy buy a whole set and use the rest for my own keyboard :)

I'll make sure to post pictures once we get started making something.

Careful with WASD shipping fees to Europe though. I got raped.

Just a quick note. It's better to use 1.5mm instead of 2mm for the plate. I can't remember who, but I remember someone who had bad results with 2mm as it doesn't fit the cherry switches as good as 1.5mm

According to the site it's estimated to 6$ to Sweden via USPS. Can anything extra be added to that? What happened with your shipping?

Thanks for telling me, 1.5mm should still be good and sturdy!

Looks like Counter-Strike! Though I bind my talk/mic key on my mouse.

Yeah like what the general consensus of this thread says, your best bet is buying individual keys.

You can buy the keys from Signature Plastics individually for $1 each.

Yeah it's for CS:GO! Since you play CS (i assume), do you feel like any more keys are needed? (Look at the new design below) Console key maybe?

Thanks! I might buy these: http://keyshop.pimpmykeyboard.com/product/dsa-blank-numpad-sets and use them. The profiles wont be a problem since it's DSA! :D

Changed the layout a little bit to make it work: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/layouts/ab0a6af11cbeccc3715be4fd20fee95d
Might try to get a spacebar and mic button but it isn't that necessary since mouse bindings can be used.
