Title: Hello, looking for the first mech
Post by: Chief_Choppa on Fri, 07 March 2014, 21:41:56
Been looking around for my first decent keyboard. I know I want blue LEDs and Cherry MX Blue but I don't really have an opinion on size/layout. I originally wanted the Shine 3 but since it is almost always sold out and I'm too impatient to wait for restock, I've been looking at the Poker 2. Any other suggestions?

Well... Razer BlackWidow Ultimate? I know, i know, Razer... but I used BlackWidow for a long time and actually build quality very decent.

First, question your assumptions: Why do you want blue LEDs? Are you sure you don’t care about layout? (Layout makes much bigger difference to experience than backlighting IMO).

Anyhow, I’m not sure what else matches your criteria, but these things seem to be pretty solidly constructed, and there are some models with blue LEDs and Cherry MX blue switches – http://www.maxkeyboard.com/mechanical-keyboard.html – though the font is kind of ugly, and the full-sized version has a slightly odd bottom-row layout in case you want to replace the keycaps (the TKL version is more standard).

Hey, if you'd like you can always get the pbt poker 2 and mod leds to it on your own rather than having to take the non pbt ones and having abs keycaps./  ;D

The blackwidow suggested above is really hard to find new, since the latest version of the blackwidow model has green LEDs, the poker 2 can be found with LEDs but they come with thinner keycaps, not thick pbt ones, its a tradeoff for being able to see the light through the caps. Can you see yourself not using function keys and arrow keys? If you can, then the Poker should be ok for you

Nope, it's not.

You can get to the arrow and F-keys by using fn+WASD for arrows and fn+1234567890+\ for F-keys. I'd suggest you pick one up. It's a great little keyboard.

Well, my BlackWidow two years old. And quite sturdy. Maybe new ones not so? But if topicstarter want blue LEDs, he could search for two-year-old BlackWidow Ultimate. Besides, it will be cheaper.
