Title: Lot of three interesting space invaders keyboards $48 + Shipping
Post by: nubbinator on Sat, 08 March 2014, 01:57:55
I haven't seen many space invaders boards like this.   Sadly they're missing some caps, but they're pretty cheap and cool looking, so I figured I'd share them.

rawko has all the weirdest old terminal keyboards. :)

For instance:

Cherry doubleshots + RGB mods? http://www.ebay.com/itm/370857334325
Who came up with this color scheme? http://www.ebay.com/itm/321125359345
Cherry MX black + nice looking but funky layout caps, I wonder who made them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330884165118
Wow it’s dirty rubberdome but nice 60% layout hiding inside (well, if you fixed the bottom row) http://www.ebay.com/itm/330931633814
Someone really didn't like space between F keys http://www.ebay.com/itm/330877901666
Someone else wanted *lots* of space between F keys http://www.ebay.com/itm/370769843131
Sorry, no #5 key for you (seriously, it's just gone) http://www.ebay.com/itm/330877920742

occasionally I look at his pricing for laughs. I think he's just randomly pricing his stuff and hoping to get desperate buyers do BIN. If I remember right that guy is a middle easterner.

And OP could have rephrased his words:

Three Space Invaders have attacked Ebay with Rawko's aid!

This is absolutely not true. They know exactly what stuff is worth, probably better than any of us.

I have been inside the facility (about 5 minutes from our office) and it is a warehouse which moves tons (literally) of obsolete computer gear. When I walked in, the first thing inside the door was 2 large pallets of keyboards stacked waist-high and wrapped in clear plastic, bound for Pakistan, sold by weight. I would bet a large amount of money that there were no buckling springs in there. 98% of what they get in is obsolete junk, and it goes straight to the 3rd world.

They have not listed a Model F in a couple of years. Back about then, they had 3 horribly trashed F-122s in a filthy cardboard box which they had listed at $85 but took $65 cash when I offered to carry it out the front door with no shipping or ebay fees. I am pretty sure that the employees pull out anything that is actually good or valuable and keep it or sell it themselves.

Anything that you see posted on ebay is something that they pulled out of the waste stream because they perceived it as having some value above salvage, but not nice enough to carry home. Remember that "salvage" means what is salvaged, not garbage to be discarded, as the term is often used.

Low-priced items that do not sell get cycled back into the dreck, decent items stay up until they sell. They will probably entertain an offer of 2/3 to 90% of the listing price on something that has not sold in a week or 2.

And it's gone already. There I was hoping I'd get to try one of the not-clicky SI.

Edit: Then again, it looks like they were linears not tactile, so I'm not sure how much I'd want that.

That's clearly a WYSE board, in data-entry layout.
Who came up with the colourscheme? WYSE did. I was more interested in the layout, with the extra double wide key on the homerow.

That must be the same OEM as the olivetti RD's I have one with the same distinctive keycap shape.

What I mean by “color scheme” is not the specific colors chosen, but the assignment of colors to keycaps (and I guess the layout in general), which is ridiculous looking.

I wonder why they decided to make the main section right-hand number layout vertically flipped from the numpad layout.

Like the 'P' being a completely different color than everything surrounding it? Yeah, I don't know what the plan was on that one.

The P isn't part of the numberpad, thats why its the colour it is.

The topre juki data entry keyboard does the same thing

But it has a physical numpad, which is the same color as P is.

The physical numpad surprises me as it's not part of any other data entry KB I know of. I think they are using the area for the PF keys (which are usually scattered around to the right of the numpad in the alpha area). That numpad is the same colour it is on other WYSE kbs, so I guess they left it. It's entirely possible that it won't send anything at all, or wasn't intended to be used.

Edit: I no longer have one for sale.

Mine is a very sturdy and handsome board. It is a little dirty, and very slightly yellowed, but uniform and not bad at all.

One day Dorkvader will get his running.

I still have one for sale. I will do $32 shipped domestic and it is cleaner and nicer than these.

Yeah, it's awesome. Everything from the case design to the PCB design, to the keycaps is very high quality. I also love the way it types: this is one of the nicer liner switches I've had the pleasure of using. If they weren't so fragile, I'd collect more. Even if I have to direct wire it, I'll get mine working: it's worth it.

Do you mean "fragile" to work on? I get the impression that Hi-Tek switches are quite sturdy and long-lasting.

But when you start working on them and pulling off caps to clean them - Yikes!

I will include 4 spare switches with the keyboard, if somebody buys it.

Yeah, if you pull it apart at all, the metal leaves inside are easily damaged.

I've really not had much problem with that. Especially if you're aware to be careful with the leaves. I haven't had the plastic bits break ever, even when stuff goes flying.

I have the TK only one as well as the one shaped like these.

I was surprised that I liked their linears. I don't usually. My original plan was to put in clicky switches into the TK one, so as to have clicky switches but still the even better build quality, but now I'm considering just using it with linears.
