Title: Unicomp's shipping has slowed a bit...
Post by: ozar on Wed, 25 March 2009, 15:06:25
Hey guys, I ordered a black spacesaver and a set of blank keycaps from Unicomp on Monday of last week, and just got word from them yesterday (eight days later) that it had shipped.

Hopefully this is only because they are extra busy, or I suppose it could also be that they are keeping fewer items in stock, and building them as the orders come in.  Either way, I used to get notice of shipment on the same day when the order was placed early enough that day.

Anyway, just a heads up for anyone expecting the former speed.

Apparently, they have been flooded with orders from the NPR piece that ran awhile back.

I was hoping to make that exact same order today (spacesaver w/ black blank keys), but I have to wait a couple weeks now due to other financial commitments.  Darn!

I sent Jim an email a few weeks ago asking him about one of their keyboards, but never got a reply. The backlog of orders would probably explain it!

I've never tried email but never fail to reach Jim by phone.  He's always friendly and helpful, even if busy.  You could try calling him on their toll free line.  For taking orders, I think he really prefers that customers use the online order mechanism.

Yeah, I think they're running a tight ship to be economically efficient. That, and the NPR induced buzz has probably slammed them. I know that I've bought two boards from Unicomp and seen probably 5 on these forums since I joined mention they were compelled to buy one recently, too. It's good stuff.

Yeah, I think Unicomp is always getting business from people here.  It's not so new news, but I think that every time someone mentions them again, someone says, "Oh yeah, I need to buy one of those and stop procrastinating!" :)

Hmm. Maybe I should buy another. :) I COULD use another SpaceSaver in the kitchen to hook up to the laptop when I'm sitting at the counter watching the fire. . . .it would fit in nicely over there and I do a lot of writing there. . . .keep from shining up the new thinkpad so quickly. Hmmm. :)

Just to offer a final update on this, I ordered on the 16th, my board was manufactured on the 20th, and it was delivered today (26th).

A 10 day turnaround to manufacture a 'board from scratch and ship it isn't too bad.  That's kinda cool in a way.  Since they can't just pull one out of inventory, they have to make one especially for you. :)

Agreed.  Since I just bought a couple new boards, my Spacesaver purchase is on hold until perhaps May... I'm not too worried about it, though.  It will eventually be mine! :D

I agree totally... if the board is made already and in stock, 10 days seems slow, but to take the order, create the board, and then ship and deliver it all within 10 days, that's pretty quick.

They probably keep only small stock as opposed to producing for individual orders.
