Title: Geekhack Game Night: An Experiment in Community Building
Post by: Puddsy on Wed, 12 March 2014, 17:22:48
So, I've noticed a lot more animosity/attacking lately, and I don't like it. I want everyone to build/rebuild some friendships in the community, and I want to have fun at the same time. I've been playing games with the same group of people for almost 2 years (1 year, 11 months, 3 days), and they've become a staple of my life even though none of us have ever met before.

My nomination for date/time for the inaugural edition goes to Saturday, March 15th, 7PM EST (might be a little late for out European friends). My vote for game goes to TF2, as it's free, fun and will run pretty well on almost every modern system (sorry microsoft windows). My group will likely let us use our private server if they're not playing a scrim that day, and even then we can use our public server. VOIP is the only real issue. TF2 has in-game VOIP, but it's fairly terrible. My VOIP software of choice is mumble, but I'd be willing to use teamspeak if it came to that. Not vent.

Suggestions, comments, Questions? Post in this thread.

(3/15) We will be using skype for comms unless anyone has an extra mumble/TS server lying around. My skype name is [REDACTED]. Add me there and then I'll add you to a call. or something.

I'd be interested, though I'm terrible at competitive shooters.  And half the forum is already connected via skype, so I'd recommend that. :thumb:

I tried using mumble to play in pugs, but I never understood it. Skype is a bit laggy tho. IMO in game voip is good enough for casual play but for competitive mumble is best

Id be up for it, although I tried to run something about 6 months ago and barely anyone turned up on time. Was a little frustrating,  make sure you schedual plenty of time for people to turn up.

Well I play DotA2 on EU-East with around 40-50 ping. I'll re-install it tomorrow before I go to bed. I think if there's lag it should be minimal. My accommodations internet is pretty good I'd say.  :)

If your team is using the server, there's some service that has servers for a 2 hour private use for free

Forgot what it was called tho

We'll just use the pub server, but if my team is stomping too hard I'll ask if we can use the private one.

It's early just because I generally go to bed around 10 PM, and we'll probably be playing for 2-3 hours.

too hard

A buddy of mine is willing to set up a server for a few hours on Saturday. It'll be a vanilla server, with alltalk and a map rotation I'll set up myself. The basic competitive staple maps plus a few of my favorites.

I'll leave more updates as they come.

Title: Re: Geekhack Game Night: An Experiment in Community Building

Map rotation (cycles randomly):

pl_upward
pl_badwater
pl_frontier
cp_granary
cp_badlands
cp_gullywash
cp_snakewater
koth_harvest
koth_viaduct
koth_lakeside
koth_king

This is more than 2-3 hours worth of maps, but they're all of the "good" maps in TF2. I left out a few others because they can get very boring. I think the map timer (the timer that says how long the server plays a map for) is set to half an hour for most gametypes (I think it's 45 for control points, I'll check), so we'll be playing at least 4 maps.

You should add me on steam/skype if you plan on playing. My steam is in my sig, and my skype is puddsyyyyy (that's 5 "y"s). If you're not in the mood to click a link, my steam name is also puddsyyyyy.

There's a space between 177 and .94. Take that out.

That concludes GH game night number 1. I had a lot of fun. It was pretty mellow, only 7-8 people showed up, but that's fine, this was mostly a test anyway. I think TF2 was a pretty good choice, but I know that a lot of people don't play it. I should've put more maps in the rotation.

Anyway, I'm pretty decided that that next game will be CS:GO. I know that we have a few talented CS players around, and it's a pretty fun game. If I get enough suggestions for a different game, so be it, we'll play something else.

Date and time to be announced in a new topic in the next few weeks.

Any feedback from tonight should be posted here or PM'd to me if you don't want anyone else seeing.

Oh, and if a mod could remove the server IP from posts in this thread, I'd appreciate it.

if anyone knows where I can get a CS server for an evening for cheap lemme know.

If not, game night may feature DotA/LoL inhouses instead of CS:GO

What's the extent of everyone's CIV 5 DLC? I think I'm gonna do a special "post clack sale" edition at 5 on this Sunday (April 20th).

I personally own all of it.

EDIT: NOT SATURDAY IM DUMB

We'll see if we can get a civ 5 game going after the clack/brobot sales. So we'll probably start around 8 EST, and we'll go until probably 10:30-11 EST, which is when I go to sleep.

So suddenly I remembered I have food to eat and game of thrones to watch, but I'm sure you're all more than capable of putting a game together.
