Can this be ordered without the MX Switches?
-
Yes, under options. Switch type: None (-$44)
-
Looks like they didn't do well with the assembly service. Haven't seen that option offered again since round 4
-
It's amazing how many rounds of GB this board makes.
-
they should shoot for one round yearly, moq 2000, price that at 180 or less, and offer 6-8 types of cherry switches.
multiple rounds don't do much good

That may be asking too much, given that there have already been at least two big GBs. Are there 2000 "enthusiasts" left who don't have one?

Multiple rounds increase availability and decrease turnaround time. If they could get the price under 100 that way, it might be worthwhile for some, but for most, having to wait for either the high MOQ to be met, ordered, processed, quality controlled, shipped or having to wait until next year if they missed this year's GB just isn't worth a ~10% savings, and for many it wouldn't even be worth a 50% savings. This in turn would just drive up the time to meet that high MOQ even more.
They way that they're doing it is ideal as far as I'm concerned, honestly, because if they can show that there is sufficient and regular demand for the product, they can either start keeping stock of them or partner with a company to produce them en masse -- ordering in advance and using those further savings to pay for the storage, profit their company, and even potentially drop the price a bit for everyone. With the added bonus that their customers would no longer need to wait for a group buy to complete in order to get one shipped to them.

I just ordered one. If mkawa is to be believed (I know, what a shady guy :p ), the number of members here is growing exponentially, so there must be a lot of people in my boat who discovered enthusiast keyboarding recently and are kicking themselves every. single. day. for missing out on all the GBs that have happened here in the last few years.

Not directly related but have you considered joining these group buys?

All the GBs they have done added together isn't even 2000 I don't think.
You are right though: they should at LEAST add the stabilizer slots to the PCB if they're going to keep the price the same.

No, although I am participating in Ivan's thick PBT cherry group buy. Actually, the reason I'm so interested in the Ergodox is the same reason I'm not interested in the group buys you've linked - I experiment a lot with various layouts. When you're trying to get used to new key mappings and function layers, the last thing you need to deal with are legends that lie to you about what you're pressing!! ;) I'm really excited about the layouts that an Ergodox will enable.
-
Also want to point out that this group buy has reached the lowest price ($199) since I last checked.
-
I haven't seen the ErgoDox not hit $199 since MD started offering it.
I will say though, I got in on the November drop, and the quality case is light years ahead of where it used to be. The acrylic is stronger and clearer, and the laser cuts are much smoother. It looks like a much better board once assembled.

MSRP $570.00
LOL

That represents the price of a one-off, or prototype.

This is good to know. Of the first and second-gen ergodoxes I have made for people those cases weren't great. One even had some missing chunks from the acrylic (and I STILL need to hear back from the person if I should complete it or not).

That's very interesting, I've been told that they don't use their local shop anymore and get their cases done from China.

damn, I always though I could buy something on there... so much interesting stuffs
-
they have to add each country separately. Just email them or whatever and they should add it.
-
I can't seem to find that info on massdrop page - how long does it take for them to ship them? Is it like month+ until they are completed or less than that?

It took about 8 weeks from closing to me getting my kit today. Also, smd soldering is a pita even with good, production quality gear.

Hi guys, should I wait for the backlit version? I'm still undecided whether to get one Ergodox or not...
And can the Ergodox use 3-leg (plate mounted) switch? The switches ($44 for 78 switches) are simply too expensive if they are only 3-leg.
-
the ergodox can use either pcb mounter or plate mounted switches.
I am using an ergodox without a case and pcb mounted switches.
-
I pulled the trigger and I'm getting a classic with no switches and the blank PBT caps, even though I can't type on blank caps to save my life LOL.
The more I look at the layout and the thumb positions, the more I think it will be quite the learning curve to get used to .......
How long did it take everyone to get used to typing on the Ergodox??

I could use it right away, but the hard part for me was learning to touchtype properly! :p

how is it? seeing how the case is $100 but the pcb is just $38 and I can throw on some old switches from POS boards, this seems like really cheap. but how are the pcb mounted switches feeling?

Less than a week and I had reached my old typing speed and drastically reduced my discomfort. Once I got an ErgoDock (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47887.0) a couple weeks later to go along with it, it has been heaven.

I'll be honest, it's hard for me to use the ErgoDock these days. For some reason it makes my right wrist get all stiff and sore.

Slightly less than an hour to go!

Well, feel free to shoot me a message if you want to unload it, I could use a spare.

According to the discussion page on Massdrop, all parts are in and shipments are going out over the next few days.
They've also started yet another round.

I cannot stress enough how true this is. When I joined I swore up and down I would buy a Filco and be done. Im now in the process of building my third board (ErgoDox) and fighting a losing battle to convince myself I don't need an MX Oktoberfest.
-
I have a southpaw friend who wants to use the right set for a gamepad, would that work? I am unsure since the right piece is supposed to connect the left.
-
The right side definitely works by itself. Just verified yesterday when I misplaced my TRRS cable for an hour...
-
To anyone who just received your kit - did you get both SMD and though hole diodes, or just SMD?
I soldered on the SMD diodes. As per some advice on GH, I applied solder to both pads and then tacked down one side and then the other. This turned out to be a bad idea, because it stressed the joints and about 15 diodes didn't work.
(So, I strongly recommend only applying solder to one side, tacking it down, and THEN soldering the other.)
I would just throw on through-holes if I had them, but I don't see them in my kit so I think I'll need to order some more SMD diodes. Argh :'(
-
Good warning!
I haven't received it yet, but I was planning on putting solder on both sides(or not being cheap and buying some solder paste, and using a heat gun.
