Title: Programmer typing test
Post by: Smasher816 on Sat, 22 March 2014, 23:08:18
I'm not sure where the best place to put this topic is, so I just threw it in off topic (mods: feel free to move it as you see fit).

A few months ago I stumbled upon a cool typing website designed for programmers - http://typing.io/lessons. This site was mentioned twice in passing here on Geekhack, but it never got much attention so I think it deserves its own thread.

I know there are a lot of geeky people here so hopefully someone else finds the site interesting. Perhaps people could post there scores for others to compare to. I for one would be interested in what non-programmers score as there are many keys that are not commonly used. ex: {}[];

That's awesome! Apparently my programming speed is roughly 50% of my normal speed (~50wpm vs ~100wpm)

Apparently I am doing better at programming then the rest. It may be due to the repetive nature of parts of Java (ex: function constructs).

As with everything the speed depends on the content and mood (relaxed vs. purposly trying to type as fast as possible). With that in mind these are a pretty generic range for my speed.

Normal: 75-90 (110 max)

Programming [Java]: 65-75 (80 max)

I did 127wpm in Java with a 20% unproductive characters :P

It's not accurate for me though, this time I looked at what I was supposed to type, whereas in programming I spend most of my time thinking and testing and using auto-complete :P

Normally I'm around 60-70 wpm when it comes to writing in English.

I think you are the first to post that they type faster with all the "programming" characters without auto-complete and not their native language.

The thinking and testing part is very true. For me it's: A bit of time planning, some type writing it, a long time debugging and thinking.

i don' know when you would actually type 75 words in a row when programming to be honest.  or even typing for a whole minute.

i type MUCH MUCH more into google and forum posts than I ever actually type.

also, templates and find replace for the win.
