Title: exposed-plate keyboards
Post by: admiralvorian on Mon, 24 March 2014, 15:47:16
Hey guys,

I really like the look of the corsair k90 or the flashget g600 and I think a case like that would look great on a poker2 with dsa caps. I've seen a couple acrylic cases like that around (though I can't remember where) and no metal ones.

Have you seen any cases or complete keyboards like this? What's your opinion the plate and top of the case being the same piece?

GON's keyboards are like that: the top of the keyboard is also the plate:

The Epsilon custom keyboard has this setup. My case is cut from two sheets of stainless steel. I really like how it looks. It's super minimalist.

GON (http://geekhack.org/index.php?board=148.0) probably makes the most expensive exposed-plate style boards around.

At first I really liked the idea of it, but I've since gotten tired of all the light bleed from the LED's. I think a contained board with LED's looks nicer with more evenly lit lines along the edges of the case.

You can also look into low profile cases, where the plate is still a separate piece, but it is pretty flush with the case and still gives you that exposed key look.  Much cheaper than getting a GON, although not nearly as pretty. :)

MK.com has some Tex cases in stock:

The low-profile cases are really nice. Does anyone make one for a CMQFR that
would expose more of the keyboard and at the same time cover the controller?

Gon has some incredible low-profile keyboards. His NS87 housing is compelling; and my 87-key would love one of Gon's housings.

That looks extremely flimsy

I did an early 40% prototype like this from stainless steel, and I can assure you it's most definitely NOT flimsy.

You know a QFR won't fit one of GON's housings because of its controller, right?

I took another look at the housing after I posted the response and wondered if the controller would fit. Thanks for the information. It's pretty much an aesthetic thing; and for now the stock housing with the dampening is quite good. Thanks for the information--I appreciate it.

Why don't you get in on Pexon's group buy. It's a $60 low profile case!

I have some picture example here:  http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=35152.msg1265513#msg1265513

This is with the Tex case as people have mentioned, most are out of stock but I think Tex will make more at end of April.

You can contact justin.wu for more info, otherwise this is where you'd get them:  http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?m=31&c=&l=product_list&sortby=price:asc

Are exposed plate keyboards harder to clean, or the contrary?

I'd guess they would pick up more dust and hairs etc.

easier you just wipe everything off the side instead of having a thin line of crap stuck in the corner of the edge.

that's easier to clean.  there's also the easier to get dirty factor to think about
