Unfortunately, I think it's just a concept right now: https://www.behance.net/gallery/Smartwatch-Concept/14929833 (https://www.behance.net/gallery/Smartwatch-Concept/14929833)

That being said, the Moto 360 comes out soonish, and it looks pretty slick too!

That Triwa watch is not real.  It was a "Concept Watch".  I think it came from this article:

http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/7/5477768/gabor-balogh-circular-smartwatch-concept

Triwa is a new Swedish watchmaker.  I have no idea about their quality.  Their website clearly states that TRIWA considers itself to be more of a fashionable brand, than a reliable watch.  I assumed that they are quartz movement watches.  But I can't tell.  Prices are in the $250-300, which might be a little high for this level of watch, especially if they are not even quartz movement (which can be amazingly accurate).  IF they are quartz, then $250 on sale for a fashionable and reliable watch, might be worth it.  They look big and heavy as well.  Which may or may not be a negative, depends on the wearer.

http://triwa.com/en/watches

I think I would recommend getting a Swatch instead.

Does it come with a laser and more importantly a flashlight?

No.  Neither the James Bond watch, nor the Triwa computer watch are real.  They are made up, like unicorns.  Well, not like unicorns, those are real.   But those watches are not.  They are imaginary.

Nice watch bro.

Lasers are bad ass.

Seriously tho, the GPS feature is nice, you don't have to hold your smartphone around like a noob.

if i could embed this damn video i'd show a "handheld" laser

But sadly a watch will never have enough battery to power a laser like from james bond T_T

Now that looks like a smartwatch that I would like to own. I think I would prefer to have it still tell the time when I receive a notification, though.
I have been looking for simpler analogue watches with a digital back before without finding one that was particularly good.

Unusual idea though about using the bezel to navigate. That is opposed to how Tissot does it - they have a line of watches where you touch the glass to select function and then the analogue hands change.

That concept watch is nice, but if it existed can you imagin the cost? Also you would have to either keep turning it on to look at the time, or have it running constantly... Raping the battery...

It's unfortunate that the reality is most of these concepts never translate to good (or real) products. No manufacturer ends up putting super hi-res screens, touch, high quality components, superb UI, etc in these devices and they usually end up being mediocre products - even with major brands behind them.

E-ink might be more feasible, but even then many products have been underwhelming. It takes the planets aligning to get sexy concepts becoming a perfect reality it seems.
Title: Re: I need this watch....
Post by: iri on Wed, 26 March 2014, 05:54:35
What eink watches are underwhelming?
Title: Re: I need this watch....

What eink watches are underwhelming?

I probably phrased that the wrong way. Nothing bad about e-ink per se, apart from the traditionally slower screen refresh rate, I've often wanted a perfect e-ink mobile device myself. It was more based on what I heard in the past from people's impressions of their Pebble watches, as well as some previous e-ink watches. It may be there are better models out there, or I'm only hearing one side of the story, but I'm used to hearing about experiences on these smart watches not being a great cohesive experience.

I want you to have  that watch. Hopefully something very similar/better is actually released. I could go with it as well, I'd like it to lose the watch convention (round face, etc.)

A better solution would be a smart watch with a screen like that, but also analogue hands laid on top of the screen. Though really... GPS, music controls, calendar stuff and fitness stuff is all I can think should ever be on a smart watch... like if u get a txt, email or phone call you should get out your ****ing phone

I'm not a fan of Smartwatches. I want Phonewatches.

I'm waiting for the new Samsung Gear with SIM slot. That way I can leave my phone home more, less stuff to carry around with me.

I backed Agent Smart Watch in Kickstarter. It's quite a piece of engineering. From the backers' update email, the challenge of a smart watch is to keep the battery going despite all the functionalities. Which is why the watch in OP post is a concept because it is beautiful and I doubt it is achievable with the current battery technology.

hahaha I have an English design fashion studio (its what I call my wardrobe), dsn't mean I can design for **** lol it's just a nasty looking black block with a child proof style Velcro looking strap... looks awful... the Pebble looks far nicer and even that's pretty ugly...

I'm all for the eink style displays on smart watches, but for the love of god there is a reason watch makers spend millions designing watches and why certain designs are timeless.
I think if your trying to make a serious smart watch you HAVE to look at the work Seiko did in the 80s with there digital watches;

A modern version of the one naasfu posted may not be all that bad, actually. Arm mounted phone with curved display. Perhaps with 2 arm bands, the upper one allowing some "sliding" or rolling of the device to accommodate wrist rotations without restriction.

I think watches paired with smartphones are going to become a big mainstream thing over the next few years. As phones get bigger and bigger they might even be relegated more to handbags and satchels and used for more heavy duty stuff, and your paired watch becomes the device you use for simple tasks like phone calls, brief texts, playing music, etc.

It will also be the way the NSA keeps track of your location, monitors your conversations, and observes all of your activities!  Sounds like freedom!

Actually, the hats don't help.  The NSA spies on you just the same.  They even spy on everybody in England as well.  It's not a conspiracy if they are really listening.  Hmm, they just read this.  Oh well.  Guantanamo Bay is nice in the spring.

How about a tinfoil home?
I would like that. Not literally with tin foil, though, but I would like to prefer to live inside a faraday cage or something like that to keep unnecessary radiation out, with RF-absorbing internal walls to keep the radiation created by my appliances from being reflected about inside.

I think that a "tin foil hat" would have to work on the same principles if it is going to be effective, but it would be much too heavy to wear.
If you are just wearing metal around your head, then any radiation that would enter your head through your face and neck would only bounce around inside your head exposing you even more than if it had exited on the other side.

A typical Bluetooth device radiates 1/1000th of what a typical cell phone does. If I can keep a smartphone in my bag and use a watch and handsfree instead in most use-cases, then that would greatly reduce my exposure to radiation from the phone. (Remember that wave amplitude attenuates with the square of the distance)

no seriously pebble is great. you can opt for the (steel) or get a black watch and metal band(20bucks) and it looks pro.

i can be in the kitchen washing dishes or i have 2 hands that have touched meat and my watch buzzes(i have it on vibrate) and i can just look at it and see a txt from my wife, then my phone notifies me i have a txt. (i have no idea why but i get notifications 3s earlier on my pebble than my phone)

otherwise you have to what? goto the sink, wash your hands, with soap, then towel dry, and then reach into your pocket to see the txt.

if put in a egg, it takes 5 watch clicks to set a 10minute timer, its faster to set it than on my 3 kitchen timers and way faster than my droid.

the best thing for me? i'm at the point in my life where i "need" a nice watch, i know nothing about watches but i was gonna drop 2-4k on a watch. (my sister is a jeweler so i'm safe in that way)

this is my way out, it's 100x way more functional than any watch i've ever owned, it ****ing has vibration, i don't think any "normal" watch has this, and i saved 4k on a fashion piece that is now a conversational piece and matches my personality (geek).

it's how i viewed an ipad when they first came out, thought it was waste, a smaller screened, non powerful laptop, and now i have 2 ipads and a venue8 at home.
