Just received my 87u today and am really loving this board. The keystrokes feel buttery smooth and cushy. It definitely feels different than typing on an MX board.
My keyboard history is as follows:
Das mx blues (first mech board)
Noppoo Choc mini mx brown
Filco MJ2 mx browns
Filco MJ2 Limited R mx reds (back when they were a big deal)
Kinesis mx brown then replaced with mx red keywells
Ergodox mx brown
and a few non mechanical keyboards.
The blues were fun but a tad too heavy. The Filco's were way overrated and the switches felt heavier than they should have been. It's like they used heavy springs or something. The Choc mini has always been my go to keyboard, it always feels great when I go back to it. The Kinesis feels tiring sometimes due too it being too tall and the wells being to curved. The Ergodox was fun to use at times but the keys are to far apart for someone with small hands.
My next move is to get some 30g domes and throw them in this keyboard.

30g domes? Holy light cup rubber batman!
-
Which 87u did you get? I'm assuming 45?
-
Welcome to the master race. Even though I sometimes switch to MX/ML keyboards, I always come back to Topre -- which makes MX/ML feel like a cheap toy.
-
Browns and blues were too heavy for you? O.o
I'm totally judging you right now

Welcome to the light young one! You have taken your first step into a wider world.

No, it's the variable weight because I wanted it to be as light as possible, and to compare the lighter domes against the heavier ones to see if I really want to do the 30g conversion. Especially since it is not a cheap conversion to do.

I have an 87U 55g and an 87U variable silent. I love them both for different tasks. 55g for coding, variable for extended typing.
You've done well grasshoppa.

First person I have seen after 30g Topre, I find 45g a little light and have a 55g in the mail, can't wait. But welcome to Topre, I think you have definitely made the right decision.

I, too, found 45-gram Topre switches to be too light; then I ordered a 55-gram 87U--success! The feel, to me, is considerably different from 30g and 45g Topre switches. Enjoy the keyboard.

Thanks I really can't wait. Been impatiently checking the mail even though I know it will likely only come next week. I've heard so many great reviews of the 55g.

Off topic but....Looks like it hit the Jburg hub!!!

Welcome to the convert club. It felt weird at first, since I hated Topre with such intensity. After a day of taking notes, it's a lot better.

For what it's worth, a couple weeks ago I had thought I wanted to abandon 55g Topre switches. I tried some other keyboards, and they were okay. But when I returned to my 87U, I realized how the 55g key switch works for me, better than any other switch I've tried or owned. SpAmRaY and I had several e-mails about moving away from Topre switches; and he was really helpful in suggesting alternative key switches--thanks for the assist, SpAmRaY. The (keys') layout of the 87U feels a bit more spacious than Filco and Cooler Master's tkl boards; and this device is the one I use to judge other keyboards. I just convinced myself that it may be time to buy one more 87UB/55g (I know... the sale recently ended).

Typing on my 30g uniform right now, and really liking it! I'll give it some time at work and we'll see if it lasts.

30g Topre's are crazy light. They are really good for pinky fingers, but honestly, I dunno about a whole board full of them.
I think the ergo-weighted silent RealForce really does a great job of mixing the 30g's and the 45g's. Those Topre guys really put some thought into designing that keyboard, and it really works. It's not the most popular Topre keyboard though for some reason. I guess it is kind of funky with the different weights for different fingers, but like I said, it works. The uniform 45g and 55g RealForce keyboards are great too. I love them all, tbh. My favorite switches however, are the silent 45g's on my HHKB Pro 2 Type-S. I still haven't tried a 55g modded HHKB, which people tell me is teh t!ts, so maybe I need to try that soon.
-
I find HHKB (45g, right?) is fine for typing, but too light for games. I hover my fingers over the keys and often accidentally press a key just by finger weight.
I can't imagine how light a 30g Topre board would be, but it would definitely not be for me.
In MX land I prefr blacks and greens, so I suspect 55g Topre would be ideal for me.

What are you waiting for? The Topre will not come to you by magic. Well, maybe it will, if you know a unicorn.
But if you don't know a unicorn, buy a Topre 55g today!

For me, 30g is a completely different typing experience from 45g and 55g. I didn't move to try 30g because I thought 45g was too heavy. I actually like the 45g weighting just fine. But unlike 45g and heavier, 30g allows me to type without bottoming out. And with the silencing foam to cushion the upstroke, it's a completely smooth force curve throughout my entire key press. It's sort of like floating the actuation point of linear switches, but with a tiny bit of smooth Topre bump tactility. Once you get used to the lightness, and can type without bottoming out, 30g is the closest to "typing on a cloud of boobs" in my opinion.

"typing on a cloud of boobs"
Never heard a better sell for Topre.

Yes eth0s the type-s's silent 45g are amazing, I am typing on them right now and I absolutely love them. Now that I have a 55g on the way I can see I am going to be insanely tempted to try a 55g HHKB. I am a bit pedantic about keeping my **** perfect though and having to cut up the domes to fit the HHKB does not appeal to me in the slightest, need to find some donor 55g ideally but who knows I may just be too tempted. :p

Rowdy, yesterday evening I saw someone selling a 87UW 55g for $180. It's a great deal IMO but I think you are probably worried about the shipping... and that really sucks for us.

Thanks, but I totally do not have a budget for anything like that for the next few months. April is probably DSA PBT set. May might end up Nuclear Green set. June?

I'm glad I decided to focus my interest into Topre. At least the caps are limited and I will only need to look for BroBots to collect. The amount of MX key sets to buy is insane. When will it ends?

You don't have to cut any domes to fit the HHKB, there are enough that they fit the way they are.
But you might have to cut one or two sets of 3 into singles when putting the donor boad back together but its really not a big deal, the domes have a line between them and you just take a pair of scissors and cut that line, very clean.

Thanks, I didn't realise that at all, totally thought I would have to cut many of them into singles.

Has someone done a 55g HHKB sound test? I was wondering how much more pronounced the thock sound would be.

See there are two big sheets of domes for the alphas all those go together and there are plenty of singles to go around as well.
