Title: Is my boyfriend addicted?
Post by: Nana on Mon, 31 March 2014, 13:53:07
Dear Geekhack members!

My boyfriend loves mechanical keyboards, as you all do. I can understand it.
But really how many do you need? He has 3 ducky`s, 2 coolermasters and one steelseries keyboard.
Of course he has all cherries! Brown, blue, red and what else i forgott (sorry for my unknowledge).
Well and of course he has several keycaps. I have to addmit that i love the rainbow keycaps...they look awesome.
Now he talks about the filco keyboard, because it is the porsche of keyboards and ducky is only the mercedes!
But what comes next? The Lamborghini?
Am I wrong that I think that it is enough, or is it really necessary to have an filco keyboard in your collection?
Thanks dear geekhacks for your answers!! :)

Just wait until he gets into the metal Korean keyboards ($360+ easily).

Filco isn't the porche of keyboards.  Tell him to man up and get a KMAC.

OP we're collectively sorry for your and your boyfriend's wallets. If he's already buying boards, he'll end up like the rest of us: 10-20 boards deep.

But think about how happy your fingers will be! And yes, Filcos are great :P

(I have like 20 boards  :-X)

I agree that Filco is the Porsche of keyboards, there are way better cars out there though!

There is no saving him now. Just wait till he gets into koreans. Then he'll be doomed! :p

OP you need to enforce a rule...every 3 keyboards he buys, he must purchase something for you (i.e. purse, wallet, jewelry, flowers, etc.) of equal value.  Honestly, it's a good idea as it will force him to really see how much he is spending. There's a sick disease of justification GH fosters where you start seeing $300 as a reasonable amount for a keyboard.

TL;DR: Make him buy you stuff too.

Imagine if the guy gets a taste of Alps...or collecting IBM boards....or wants a uTron. :P

It's never enough! My boyfriend used to think I'm crazy too. 6 keyboards, multiple keysets, and far-too-many novelty keys later, I think he's finally given up trying to understand it; he bought me the seventh member of my collection last week.  :P

I dream that one of these days, I'll be the owner of a shiny Korean keyboard...

Yeah man.  Self-instituted rule.  It works. Look at my sig...I only have 9 keyboards!  The disease is cured!

To TS, our sincerest apologies for the incoming slimming of your boyfriend's wallet. But it's happened to all of us, so we're going to condone it, haha. I consider myself one of the less-addicted members, and in about a year and a third, I've purchased five keyboards and sold one, for the sum of nearly $600, including the reduction from the sale. I think that I'm about finished, but that's just an example. If you want to save yourself, tell him to sell the ones he never uses and just buy a Korean or HHKB or whatever the best is in the switch he likes. It'll be better for both of you.

Tel him to try BS, topre, alps and customs as soon as he can so that he finds his favorite one sooner than later. Imagine if he fell in love with topre or BS AFTER he bought 10 cherry keyboards. The wallet pain  :p

Thats the most reasonable answer I think you are going to get OP since this is an keyboard enthusiast forum that do not have a habit of buying only one/two keyboards.

So I guess I am lucky that he only wants to buy a filco!!
Ok how about I tell him that he can spend another 800€ on keyboards and then it is over?
Would that be fair?   :-[

Truth be told: Your "lack of knowledge" does not seem that authentic, if I may say, either you are already engaged in the GH madness, or you are a GHer yourself. In either case, I think you already know the answer to your "candid" question, there is no limit for how many keyboards someone may need, when he / she is an actual KB lover. How many shoes a girl should have? Again, that just does not make sense.  :p

My boyfriend is addicted to collecting mechanical keyboards and keycaps too!
Ask him to get you a filco ;)
My boyfriend was clever and got me into it by getting us "couple" keyboards and matching keycap sets heh. Now I share his hobby! :) Ask him to get you a backlit keyboard and mod the LED lights together!
Maybe it rainbow!! lol

I got my daughter into GH madness by dressing my Poker X with cute white keycaps and letting it near her room. Suddently she began exploring my caps boxes for customization and she even took over my GH account for some weeks. Now, I just hope she doesn't get too close to my fellow GHers.  :(

i bought my bf two keyboards, and he finally bought a ducky for himself because he liked how the thick pbt caps felt on my old poker 2. I don't think he has the craze like me though, he's fine with his ducky premier :( idk how people resist the urge to try every switch.

Just wait until he gets into the metal Korean keyboards ($360+ easily).

Filco isn't the porche of keyboards.  Tell him to man up and get a KMAC.
+1

I don't know why he is buying multiple factory boards. He should sell them for one nice custom board.

Then you'd better move out of Brooklyn soon.  I went to Red Hook the other day, and zomg, I saw so many gentrifying Hipsters I almost died.  Hipsters on bikes, Hipsters on scooters, Hipsters with little baby Hipsters.  Hipsters eating lobster rolls, Hipsters drinking "craft" beers, Hipsters spinning yarn.  Yes, I really saw this, and I cried a little for the old Brooklyn of thugs and rappers.  RIP Bed-Stuy.

@OP:  When ur BF gets to $10K spent on keyboards, you can officially file a complaint here about obsession.  Until then, he's just "keyboard curious", and is probably just going through a phase.

The Bugatti Veyron of keyboards: IBM Model F 122.

I disagree. The Veyron is based on very modern engineering (and is ugly). The F122 is Ancient and beautiful. Never in the history of keyboarding has a worse comparison been made.

122 is like the vintage mercury Marquis or something.

I don't even want to count how many keyboards I have. Must be more than 20. Although, they're all vintage - 90's or older. I think that's better than just having a bunch of modern cherry boards, but others may not. At least I'm not counting in the hundreds like a few around forums like this.

Just wait until he gets into the metal Korean keyboards ($360+ easily).

Filco isn't the porche of keyboards.  Tell him to man up and get a KMAC.
+1

I don't know why he is buying multiple factory boards. He should sell them for one nice custom board.

Actually, it's not hard to understand why he's buying a lot of stock keyboards if you think about it.

Nana, just take his favourite keyboard into your work and don't bring it back home for a months, and make sure you eat your lunch at your desk.  When he buys a new keyboard, take the new one into work and give him the old one back...

PS - my apologies to your boyfriend.

The issue here is not keyboards; the issue is the management of financial balance in the relationship. Personally, my wife and I pool our finances together into a joint account, but set aside $100 each per fortnight as an "allowance" that we may each spend however the fk we want, free of guilt, free of judgement.

I often bite my tongue when I see her $100 go towards the crap she finds interesting. I'm sure she feels the same way about my keyboards. At the end of the day, a hobby is a hobby and it really doesn't matter what it is or how ridiculous it seems to others, so long as there is equality, transparency and mutual contentment with the financial arrangements of the relationship/household.

lol I fancy myself a fairly reasonable person! Our particular solution to our finances was a last resort to curb her shopping sprees and minimise the financial damage it was causing to the family. (She has bipolar.) In a relationship with unpredictable dynamics, it's important to be fair, reasonable and use fundamental rules to keep things sensible and stable.

Setting up the $100 each was the single most financially beneficial strategy I've implemented to date. It makes us both, not only accountable, but brings back a genuine sense of having earnt the reward of our compliance to the rules.

What on earth...

You've expanded your collection quite a bit since I last talked to you. How are the Topre switches compared to the rest? Will you be back in CL anytime soon? [and if so can I try it sometime  :p]

I like my keyboards, and I love my family. I do not see any conflict in that. Surely, while I am a GHer, I do not spend money we need for other needs in pieces of plastic over $200 dollars, thus, I may say that I still have common sense. However, I also love to know that my daugther also enjoys to type in my old Poker, and that she likes to dress up the little board with different caps. It is really hard for me to understand those who pay outrageous prices for some things, while there are other alternatives with still a good level of functionality.

it's silly and stupid to complain about your significant other's hobby, this is life advice, if you feel you have to intrude in a "NAGGING" way, **** off, this goes both ways of course. If the hobby is not hurting the relationship, is not making 1 or the other or both broke and not impacting daily life, then **** off.

and no, i haven't been scorned (my wife and i have similiar hobbies and just respect the hobbies we have alone), but i've seen it where a dumbass significant other will intrude on the other's hobby in a negative way.

I think once you have some spare money to splash around and once you're hooked, you want to have different keyboards to suit your moods.

I currently have:

2 x Noppoo choc mini /w reds,
1 x Filco TKL /w reds,
1 x Razer Blackwidoe Tournament edition /w blues,
1 x Keycool 84 /w Browns

I'm in the market to get a:

Realforce 87u or a HHKB Pro 2 as well.

I think it's more a collecting thing, I like to have them there and it's always nice to have back ups and what not.

I don't think your boyfriend is going over the top or whatever, it's just one of those things that us "geeks" like to do.

Hi, my name is Oobly and I am an addict.

No offense meant.

Just buy a great keyboard or two "for the girlfriend". Either she becomes an addict, too, or she just has to accept them in the house since they were a gift to her.... maybe.

I "only" have 2 mechanicals at home and another on the way (for the office). My wife is getting one of my old rubber dome boards for her new PC, so I can "upgrade" it sometime in the future with a mechanical if I "need" to ;)

I don't know how I'm going to explain all the keycap sets I have ordered, but that's another story.

I can understand how it can get out of control, as the more you want, the more you spend, luckily I have side cash, but still could I have spent 1k more reasonably probably?
