Title: New to Geekhack || AMA
Post by: Anarchist on Tue, 01 April 2014, 14:12:14
Hey guys, I'm new to geekhack.

I recently learned that mechanical keyboards even existed and I had been doing some research. This is one of the places I found on google to be helpful so I thought I'd register.

If you're curious I decided to go with a ducky shine 3 (cherry mx brown, red led) with plans to order a second keyboard in the future with blues or reds.

My name is Tyler, feel free to ask me anything. =p

Oh, and do you have to type in a 'verification' every time you post here? If so, yuck  :blank:!

Favorite flavor of ice cream. You will be judged harshly based on your answer.

Boxers :P

Favorite flavor of ice cream. You will be judged harshly based on your answer.

There are a lot of ice creams that I like:

Reese's, cookies and cream, butterfingers, cookie dough, chocolate, etc

sorbets: lemon, lime, strawberry, watermelon

Judge if you must!

@OP:  Welcome to GH!

@GH'er's:  How is it that so many noobs come here and say "I've learned so much about mechanical keyboards from geekhack, so I've decided to order a Ducky Shine"?  Do we have a thread that recommends Ducky's for noobs?  If yes, can we lock it and delete it?  If no, then where do the noobs get this idea that we think Ducky's are good keyboards?  AFAIK they're terrible.  Or at least they were. Have they improved?  Am I behind the times?  And since when do we recommend backlit keyboards?  (I guess after the Race?)  But the backlit Race was kind of an experiment and not a lifestyle, IIRC.  Have we become a backlit keyboard forum?  If yes, then ZOMG WTF, where did we go wrong?

You're really behind on the times, Ducky = Filco atm apparently

Brother ethos....I have been using a Ducky Shine 2 with clears as my daily driver for almost a year now, it is an excellent keyboard, I don't use the backlit features but if I ever had to work in the dark I guess I could.

If you don't pick the right person, something terrible will happen :P.

I too like Reese's and Butterfinger flavor. :)

Ever since I opened up a Shine 2 I've been impressed with the build quality of the Ducky Shine series. I can't speak to the rest of their boards. I would still pick my Filco over the Ducky but a lot of people ask for backlit so that's what I recommend to them. And what's wrong with backlighting? I like it...and I like Filcos.

Haha, I'm not saying that "I learned this" or even that the forum even regards it as good.

I meant that I was researching that specific keyboard/the various keyswitches and I found helpful answers here.  I happen to really like the backlit look (I game a lot, fits into that lifestyle I suppose).

I think you're sorta on your own, everyone that I've talked to/every review that i've read has said the ducky shine 3 is built pretty well.

What do you have against backlit keyboards?

AMA? Did I just walk into Reddit thinking it was Geekhack?

Ask me anything isn't exclusive to Reddit =p It suits an introduction quite well imo.

Sweet, I'll be leaving some kind of nooby review soon.  Not sure I'll post an actual thread but I'll let you guys know how I like it.

I like the backlit feature as well.  I'll probably go filco with some cherry mx reds next.

Sorry I screwed up some of the quotes, oh well.

Let me tell you, the rabbit whole goes deep. A few months ago I knew next to nothing about mechanical keyboards and now I could easily spend an hour talking about them.

With all the different things that can go into one (layout, switch, caps, etc) I'm sure you will want to try out a lot of things and end up with more than two boards.
