Title: Steelseries Ikari / Medium-priced mouse
Post by: huha on Wed, 08 April 2009, 04:18:02
There seem to be quite a number of Ikari fans here, so: Is the optical (non-laser) version okay or do I need the laser? I'm looking for a medium-priced mouse for my secondary computer and for extended gaming sessions with friends. At the moment, I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2, which is a nice mouse for surfing and office tasks (it's even okay for gaming), but its comparatively heavy weight just kills me after several hours of nonstop gaming (which, luckily, doesn't happen very often--but even 4 or 5 times of 10 hour gaming per year justify getting a new mouse. I'd also like to have a spare mouse when the batteries die and I don't have any new ones handy (which also doesn't happen very often, but is extremely unnerving when it does).

So: Is the Steelseries Ikari Optical any good or should I get the laser version? What other mice can you recommend? I also took a look at Logitech's RX1500 which features the best scroll wheel I've ever used. Any recommendations or experience with either of these mice or alternative suggestions?

The Ikari is excellent and I would recommend it for sure.
The Optical is very good and actually recommended by Steelseries for gaming!

I have an Ikari laser, and don't care too much for it.  It tracks well and all, but its simply not comfortable at all.  If I had to try pinpointing the reason for this, I'd say the Ikari is too flat.  I much prefer the Logitech G9 over the Ikari even though I use a "palm" grip and not a "claw" grip.

Total opposite of what lam will tell you though, so its all a matter of preference.

Yup I will say its the other way around. I just gave my G9 to my mother and got another Ikari.
Most comfortable mouse I have used :)

You need to hold them first dont you? Shame more shops dont stock such things.

If you can find them in a shop they both have packing that let you hold the mouse under the plastic. Gives a ruff idea of size etc.

Yup definitely try feeling them first.  I bought my Ikari online since shops don't carry it here and I wanted to try something different (and pink is awesome).  The Ikari isn't a bad mouse by any means, I just prefer the G9 over it.

I like the pink one just for the looks, but is it available on its own? I just found horribly expensive mouse+mousepad bundles.
Is the Ikari's form comparable to any other, more well-known mouse?

I used a logitech MX510 for the past 3 years and figured I'd be best off getting a G7 since it's the same type of shape, but I was sufficiently enticed by the Ikari laser to give it a try. I find it more comfortable than my MX510 (which I loved) and just like it a lot overall. Lighter is definitely better.

I replaced my old MX518 with an Ikari laser. I'd prefer if it was slightly less flat, but other than that it's as close to perfect as you can get.

I didn't find length, width and height specifications for the Ikari anywhere. Could anyone of you be so kind to measure it?
Currently, I'm using Microsoft's Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0, which does not only have one of the longest pointing device names ever, but is also quite high and round, which I like quite a bit.

i have the optical and it tracks badly. I read a review somewhere which i cannot find anymore but basically they did a great comparison show that the optical version sux.

optical has smooth plastic body. Laser has a textured grippy one
optical has 15g acceleration. Laser 20.
optical has only 3 settings 400/800, 400/1600, and 800/1600* takes 300ms to toggle between these settings.
Laser has 1-3200 at 1 increments

I love the form factor. I love the buttons (they are like a logitech mx510). The scroll wheel is really nice. it's pretty light... Pretty much everything about the mouse is good/great except the tracking.
