Title: Realforce 86U increase noise?
Post by: remdell on Thu, 03 April 2014, 17:56:51
I recently got a Realforce 87UW 55g (dental banded and lubed).  I noticed that when I lightly graze my fingers across its keys, it makes very little noise.  This is really surprising for me considering I have an 86UB 45g board, and it creates significant noise, similar to that on Alps boards, when grazing its keys.  I'm wondering if the increased noise on the my 86U is because of its model, key force, and/or because it lacks modifications.  I have yet to try removing the lube or dental bands on my 87U for comparison.  However, if it means anything, I've lightly key-grazed my KBT Pure when it wasn't modded (lubed, stickered, and dampened), and I couldn't tell the difference.

I lightly grazed my fingertips over a few keyboards for sound comparison (ignore the fan noise):

KBT Pure w/ MX reds (lubed, stickered, o-ring) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21834694/keyboard/key-graze%20KBT%20Pure%20mx%20reds.MP3)
Ducky Shine 2 TKL w/ MX blues (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21834694/keyboard/key-graze%20Ducky%20Shine%202%20mx%20blues.MP3)
DELL AT101W w/ Alps blacks (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21834694/keyboard/key-graze%20DELL%20AT101W.MP3)
Realforce 86U w/ 45g Topre (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21834694/keyboard/key-graze%2086U.MP3)
Realforce 87U w/ 55g Topre (lubed, dental banded) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21834694/keyboard/key-graze%20silence%2087u.MP3)

I should also note that the 87U seems to have less key wobble than the 86U

Honestly, I would guess that it's the dental band mod that's changing the amount of noise that's coming from the keyboard, and reducing the noise when you graze the keys.  The lube may have something to do with it, but I would guess less than the dental banding.

It's a lot quieter because instead of plastic-on-plastic contact which is on your 86, it is plastic-on-rubber in the 87.

All I know is that running my fingers across my HHKB Type-S is Soooooo much more quite than my WASD v2. I think a lot of it has to do with the keycaps (thicker PBT vs. thinner ABS).

Neunelfer might also have a valid point. When running your fingers across the keys they will still get pushed down a tiny bit. When the key is pushed back up to its resting spot the bottom of the plunger will hit the top of the case making a noise. By adding dental bands that return noise is lessened as it is now hitting softer rubber.

It is forsure more high pitch with no dental bands or lube.  :thumb: silence is so nice.
