Title: Dear British friends, please help me!
Post by: Shadovved on Tue, 08 April 2014, 11:43:34
I'm trying to find a safe way to ship a wall clock from UK to Singapore, but the cost estimates from DHL is at a whopping 350-400 GBP, without insurance, nearly 70% of the cost of my clock.

Does anyone work with or knows any freight company that can ship it safely and at a reasonable price? :thumb:

Hand carry on board would be my last resort as the size might not be accepted as carry-on baggage......

Please please please, I'm gonna leave in around a week or so :'(

If you pack it really securely then Royal Mail miggggght be alright... There really isn't any cheap internation shippingal service (at least not one that I know of). You might try parcel2go.com aswell

I think there's still a restriction of just one piece of carry on luggage, so you'll need to stuff everything you want for the flight into your pockets...

I think a 40 year old clock is too fragile for the hands of RM, since post offices usually have a limit on how large the item can be?

EDIT: we have 2 people travelling

Nope. Singapore Airlines doesnt allow carry on larger than 115cm of L.B.H totalled :-X

What about checked baggage size limits? Many passenger jets also carry freight anyway for international couriers.

I dont dare check it in.......afraid that when I get it at the other end it'll be in pieces :-X

But I should probably crate it if I'm gonna be checking it in.....

Yes that is what I would do. Have it professionally packed in a plywood crate and check it on the flight as freight.

Get some GOOD foam rubber as well. Crating it is probably the best course of action, and what I would do.

Foam rubber should be reasonably cheap, and crates aren't hard to find.

I don't know how relevant this is, but the most delicate thing I've ever traveled with was my original launch PS3. It fitted inside my suit case and packed with clothes was totally fine.
Now I've no idea if this is possible for you, but given that shipping it might be worth getting a crazy big suit case for it, and just packing it like mad making sure it's safe and secure. My guess is that it will be handled better in the hold of a passenger jet than if it was shipped as you'll be closer to 'sending' it and 'collecting' it at the other end

Hey,

The accommodation place recommends international students to use this shipping company if they want to ship stuff back.
I'm not to sure how much would it cost but you should check it out.

Double-boxing with the inner box floating in a sea of styrofoam peanuts inside the larger box is the best way to ship.

Unfortunately, shippers use voodoo equations that factor in both volume and weight to determine price, with steep up-ticks at certain thresholds, more likely volume-related than weight-related.

Antiques clocks aren't worth anywhere near as much as they used to be; I can help you out if you're ever looking for long case clocks  ;D

Time is running out for you; I am suspecting it has run out for Terran already since he's gone MIA. Days of freedom, dignity and happiness are almost over.  ^-^ It's time to be an NS slave, time to realize this truth: NS for sinkies, Goodies for FT!
