Title: Tigersharkdude's Wooden Wrist Rests
Post by: tigersharkdude on Mon, 14 April 2014, 20:27:43
I am changing the layout of this thread, it is now the "Tigersharkdude's Wooden Wrist Rests" thread, I will be posting my work and updates here

This is the first piece that I made, it was an experiment to see if I could do it

I started off with a piece of Pine that was 48" x 9.5". I cut the pine down and made two pieces for the wrist rest (W.R.)
 * one 9.5" x 14" for the bottom
 * and one 4.5" x 14" piece for the actual W.R.

After gluing and clamping the two pieces together and letting them set for ~48 hours, I angled the W.R. with a table saw
(I ended up angling it farther than this picture shows, I was not happy with this angle, it wasn't "sharp" enough)

After cutting the W.R. down I broke out the sander and went to town on it.

I didn't really like how "sharp" the angle was so I took some more time to further round the W.R. off.

Now I was happy and it was time to start staining, I went with
Minwax brand stain and the color is "English Chesnut" (this was in our garage ... LOL)

I did one coat on the top section first and let it set for about 2 hours and
then one coat on the bottom and let it set for about two hours.

The wood really soaked up a lot of the color of the stain, so I ended up adding another coat of stain to the top and bottom
(http://i.imgur.com/g4trDKW.jpg)

After I let the stain was dry (about 18 hours) I applied NUMEROUS coats of urethane.

After the urethane was good and dry (dried while sleeping),
I wet sanded everything with 2000 grit WET sand paper.
After sanding I used my buffer and some Meguiars polish to bring out the shine.

Looks good.  Does it stay or have a tendency slide off the back?

thanks

So far I have not had any issue with the keyboard moving. I had thought about routing 2 notches for the legs on the keyboard to sit in, but I ended up not doing it because it doesnt move.

the unit itself did slide around so I put 4 1" grippy pads on the bottom corners and now it doesn't budge

I'm thinking about sanding it down and either staining it a DARK (almost black color) or painting it black ... Thoughts?

Painting it black would be coool but the pics are no longer available to view so I can't give my honest opinion :thumb: :p

Nice!
The best part of making things yourself is that one can make it exactly how one wants it (or make another one:P).

Did you stain this one the same green or did you use something else? I like the V2 a lot.

V2 is stained with "weathered grey". If you are interested in one pm me here or Reddit (PREFERRED and same username)

I was told yesterday that it was 2 months before I could list stuff.

I would need to post in the Artisan section, right?

I didn't realize you hadn't reached the 2 month requirement, my bad.

So until then please remove any details regarding a transaction from this thread.

Tigersharkdude I really like the Ebony stain :thumb:

BTW I would totally hit you up for a rest but I just finished one myself, if you want to check it out. :D

But I will totally keep you in mind in the future if I want something different than what I have.

any pics? Id love to see it.

As I am getting more comfortable making these (read figuring out the exact steps) I am starting to experiment. I tried doing a piece with a base stain, then applying a decal, and then staining over it ... it turned out ok (it was just a test).  Doing this though isnt budget friendly though, since I would have to do the vector file and then get someone to cut it mail it)

I finished up the Simple Wooden Wrist Rest this morning. This was the first "simple wrist rest" that I made, I learned some things that I will use on the next piece (Just FYI, Ebony stain is a PITA to work with)
