Title: Filco Majestouch-2, A good first board?
Post by: BulletKandy on Fri, 18 April 2014, 16:03:11
Hey guys!

I'm looking at getting my first board and am looking at the Filco Majestouch-2, Tenkeyless is this a good choice.

I think I'm going to go with brown switches too, would like blue but the noise may be too much for night time usage?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

BK

They lovely boards you won't be disappointed but if you can try some switches before hand that will help a lot.

Absolutely, I got a Filco as my first board and I don't regret it at all. If you're worried about the sound, check out these links from Mr Interface's site that let you simulate the sound of the switches:

http://www.mrinterface.com/keyboardsims/DSImacquietclick/index.html - MX Browns

http://www.mrinterface.com/keyboardsims/cherrylsceu/index.html - MX Blues

I've had a fiddle with some blues, but there isn't much opportunity for me to try many out.

Cheers.

As the CPT said, it's a great board. I own a Filco MJ2 and a QFR, and personally, I think the difference in quality is negligible. If you're into saving money, the QFR will be more bang for your buck. But if you want the premium brand for the experience/status (lol, but nothing wrong with that if it makes the heart happy) then go for the Filco.

Also, the QFR has a detachable cable if it makes a difference to you. Both have pretty meh ABS caps.

Also, some people will disagree with me, but consider Reds instead of Browns. I never thought I would like typing on a linear switch, but then I tried Reds and I preferred them to browns. Browns just feel like gritty Reds after you've tried the latter. Yes, Browns are "tactile" but for most people the main feedback is from bottoming out, which Reds also give you.

I had a look at the QFR but cant seem to find one in the UK.

I love my Filcos (Filcoes?). They're about as good as it gets unless you lay down the arm and leg for a Kustom.

Filco is probably THE best starting board. most people don't start with Filcos though, because they're on the pricier end of the spectrum, but yeah, you really can't go wrong with a Filco :)

The only thing that is wrong with a filco is the price.  if you're okay with the price, then you're good to go regret free.

Yup, great first board. Highly recommend it since my first board was also filco majestouch brown. I would recommend you go for brown switch but you should really try out all the different switches before making your final decision. Maybe it's good idea for you to purchase switch testers (one from cm is good)

my first and only keyboard is a first gen MJ, and i love it to death. brown all the way man, nobody without a refined pallet will have nothing to complain about. best of luck and happy hunting. i do suggest buying a switch tester if you haven't tried out more than most likely brown and blue.

Thanks for the replies and welcomes everyone, In the UK it seems all the boards are around the same price so it doesn't seem that expensive to me!

Also started with the Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless Ninja with Browns, bought it via Keyboardco. Excellent service, excellent board. Really love it. Sturdy, heavy, good quality. It was worth every penny.

The only problem is KeyboardCo is pretty lazy when it comes to keeping Amazon well stocked.

It's a shame they buy the rights for US distribution, give a middle finger, and then force those to import from NCIX Canada when they only restock once every 18 months or so.

After owning Razer Blackwidow with blues, 6gv2 with blacks, Leopold FC700R with reds, Leopold FC200R's with reds and blues, two FILCOs with blues and browns, i can safely say that FILCO is the best of the best. At least for me.
Though i must admit that i regretted buying browns. I had reds before i had browns, and i really prefer them. Browns really do feel like you have reds, only with some sand under them. Maybe because of the weak tactile feedback, but this is mainly personal preference/experience. Many people do say they have issues with this though.
So if i were you, i would go for FILCO with reds/blues depending on what you will use your keyboard for and how loud/silent you want your keyboard to be.

Filco is good, but before buying I would check out the Rosewill RK-9xxx keyboards, as  aside from some labeling, they are the same but cost less.

cheaper case, not double plated, more questionable quality
but yes the same in terms of costar keyboards.

Some people here say that "costar" keyboards can mean very different things in terms of quality as costar has a multitude of factories, each at different quality levels, of which Filco is argued to be produced in the top-knotch facilities. Also, Filco has a double thick PCB if I'm not mistaken, not sure about Rosewill? Of course, I am not saying that Rosewill is less of quality than Filco. Rosewill might also be made in the high end factories of costar. But of Filco it is known and posted here.

I think a CMQFR is fine; however, I gave 'the lady' in my life my CMQFR/MX Blue,
and now she'd like a Filco M2/MX Blue. I should never have told her about Geekhack.
Looks like I have to find an FM2/MX Blue.

Whatever you decide to purchase, enjoy your first mechanical keyboard.
