Title: Help! I have two bags of switches...
Post by: Defect on Tue, 22 April 2014, 21:04:58
Got a Pure PCB today from turtle (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=21597), and I'm going to put together my first 60% using a green case I got from ApocalypseMaow (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=24815).

Here's my problem.

I have two bags...
One is full of lubed stock blacks, and the other is full of lubed 62g clears.  (Springs thanks to Sprit (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=31094) and HPE1000 (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=30234)!)

I also have a bag of clear springs, stock blue springs, and a bag of blue stems.

But really deciding between stock blacks and clears.  How do I do a poll...screw it...just post!

Edit:
Thanks for the replies guys!

I am using any/all spare parts for the other PCBs I have on the way, I just wanted to hear your votes for what I'm doing with this particular board.

Seems like 62g lubed clears for now, and the lubed stock blacks and lubed ghost blacks will go in the next mini I get in a couple weeks :)

I use/love all switches!  Every board in my sig gets rotated weekly and the choc mini gets modded every now and then :P

Of course, and I love to hear yours!

My personal preference is...I have more stuff coming in the mail :)

Help me decide on this one, what won't be used here will be used later 100%

Blacks and clears are very different switches. I like them both, but I tend to use tactile and clicky switches for typing and general use, and linear for gaming

mx blue is the most advanced and well designed switch from cherry.

Least contact points for friction..

I lubed a blue once.  Hahaha what the heck happened to it.  Hilarious.

The best thing for you to do is to try out the switches for yourself and decide what you like.

I prefer clears. Cherry linear switches don't cut the mustard for me.

I've never tried lubed cherry linears, but I have many many vintage linear KBs that are much more smooth than stock cherry linear. It is therefore my opinion that linear cherry switches with lube should be used in a solid case (metal for preference) with a real steel plate.

Tactile switches work well in a more "movable" plate/case.

This is just my opinion, though.

If you tend to bottom out when typing as I do and are totally fine with that. You might find the linear blacks a dream come true. I lurve my clicky switches but at this point I haven't found a reason to like Cherry tactility for its own sake. I use almost exclusively clicky switches or blacks. Especially if you haven't spent a lot of time with blacks, do it. They grow on you like moss on rocks.

Warning: The following post contains generalisations and opinions.

62g ErgoClears (like the ones you have) are my favourite switch bar none. Use them. On the other hand, if you are going to use the board mostly for gaming... still use the 62g Clears!

Preferably with good, thick, quality keycaps.

P.S. - I love my Pure, the layout is the best of the 60% boards, IMHO.

It's personal preference. You can put some switches into a switch tester to test which one is suitable for you before applying them into a real keyboard
(http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/images/products/large_571_MXSwitchSampler_2.JPG)

From what you get, you can have 2 sets of option :
- 80g stock Black + 62g Clear
- 80g Clear (Panda Clear) + 62g Black

Personally, I would prefer the 80g Clear (Panda Clear) + 62g Black  :p

Can you really tell from one switch?

Why not both? My ergodox currently has vintage blacks on one half and stock clears on the other one.

On one half, put black switches. On the other half, put the clears. In the top half of the blacks, put some type of springs. In the bottom half of the clears, put another type of springs.

This is really poorly worded, but I hope you get the gist.

I use both currently as my two daily drivers. Clears at work, Blacks at home. I type on the clears and I game on the blacks, and when I do type on the blacks, I think I prefer it slightly to the clears, even if they are pretty loud. Although long periods of typing are probably more comfortable on clears. The only thing I don't like about my clears board is the sound my horrible ABS spacebar makes with these damn costar stabilisers. It's pretty horrible.

I would say blacks for games, clears or blues for typing, but if you tend to bottom out a lot, go for clears. Although if you switch to other boards regularly, you may find yourself making a lot of noise on lighter switches like I do when I move to blacks.

Panda clears are my 2nd favorite clear mod!  Stock black springs are REALLY growing on me the more and more boards I use.  Maybe not great for a marathon gaming board though.  62g black felt too close to reds somehow.  I feel like it'd be a waste of these beautiful gold springs :P

On one half, put black switches. On the other half, put the clears. In the top half of the blacks, put some type of springs. In the bottom half of the clears, put another type of springs.
Did this once on a throwaway data 911.  It was terrible.  Lucky I only placed, did not solder

I like heavy springs (I'm 6'6" so I bottom out on pretty much every spring out there), and between the three boards I have with Clears and the one board I have with Blacks, I honestly prefer the Blacks.  The Clears just feel like they get progressively spongier near the bottom of their travel where the blacks just feel more consistent.

What does your height have to do with bottoming out? Short people can't reach the bottom of a spring? How short do you think everyone else is compared to you? Rude.

I meant that I have heavy fingers and naturally press the keys really hard.  Overreact much?

Height implies heavy fingers. Dat logic.

You guys are silly.  So here's why a 6'6 man would bottom out: he is standing above his KB and has to stab downwards to reach his KB.

If he was 6'7 he would never bottom out because he would only press keys half way when stabbing down.

Seriously you guys are hilarious.   Let's go back to loving switches again :P

I prefer stock Clears and 65g Blacks/Reds, personally. Then stock Blacks or Reds. Finally Browns.

I don't really like 62g Clears, but many people do.
