Title: Geekhack IRC Channel
Post by: Deiz on Wed, 15 April 2009, 12:38:07
After some searching, I found that Geekhack had an IRC channel on Freenode, but it's since become inactive and fell into disuse.

IRC's long been my preferred method of online communication, due to the immediacy and relatively candid discussions, the former likely having a lot to do with the latter.

I'm wondering if there's any interest in re-establishing it. I've taken the liberty of registering #geekhack on Freenode, and I'll set access flags for interested staff members.

Details:

#geekhack on irc.freenode.net
irc://irc.freenode.net/geekhack (http://irc://irc.freenode.net/geekhack)

If you lack an IRC client, try XChat (http://xchat.org/) on Linux, Colloquy (http://colloquy.info/) on OS X, and mIRC (http://mirc.com/) on Windows.

If you don't want to install a stand-alone client, you can connect via Mibbit, which is an Ajax browser-based IRC client.

This link (http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23geekhack) will connect you to #geekhack within your browser.

I'm not much of an IRC'er myself and always burn out after about 10 minutes on any channel that I visit.  Forums like these are about as instant as I generally like to get, but it is good that the IRC channel is available for those that do enjoy instant communications.

Personally, I don't like IRC too much.  Because I'm not on the internet a lot at home, I would only use it at work, and that's not a good thing to do.  Plus, even if I do allow myself to get on an IRC channel, I have to step away for 30 min to an hour at a time and then realize I missed four conversations and it's hard to get back into everything.  I just prefer forums, I guess. :)

I think IRC is pretty cool for general chit-chat, and I would join in for that, but I would hate for valuable info to be lost in an IRC conversation and not preserved in the Forum.

We had one up for a while (even had a pretty slick bot up keeping the channel warm for us and distributing the appropriate priv's)...however, it never got used.

Personally, I like IRC.  But it simply was not used at all.

Same, I mostly idle in irc rooms and use it every so often - but don't really expect it to be chatty like an oldschool aol chatroom or something lol

freenode is generally a pretty mature network, you won't really find script kiddies.

mIRC is just a program, not a site.

Different IRC networks have different audiences. Freenode emphasizes open source development, and attracts an audience that's interested in that.

I used to hang out in IRC a lot back in the day, but I haven't used it in years.  I'll drop by if the channel from time to time.

I haven't been on IRC in about 10-15 years. I was never really that much into it. I would rather chat with a real person.*

* I mean like sit with a person and talk, not talk to robots or something.

I find robots kinda boring.  It's like they're programmed to say certain things.

Can you elaborate on that?

No, I prefer to speak in generalities when I make smart-a*s comments. :)

Because I am failing to elaborate, thus, providing any specifics on my reasons for not chatting with robots.

I feel like a netsplit.

Don't forget to upgrade your psyBNC to psyRJ45.

Actually, I keep a few channels open during the day.  Wordpress on Freenode, news on EFnet (good place to keep up with things).

*groan*

That reminds me, what's even MORE sad than that joke is, on one IRC network I'm on, psyBNC was an automatic gline word. (Then someone in one channel I hang out in figured out that he could set his nick to psybnc, and got a few users in their help channel to ban themselves. :D)

Is it possible to get a permalink to this IRC channel somewhere, so new users can find it? This channel name is going to get buried in a sea of topics and no one will ever find it.

nice thing about forum is you can go back and forth between doing real work.
