Title: Using keys from a Cherry MY-8000 with a Poker II/QFR?
Post by: swornxin on Thu, 24 April 2014, 19:16:07
So I foolishly made an offer on eBay for a Cherry MY-8000 (similar to this one here:  http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/keyboards/pos/8000/index.htm (http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/keyboards/pos/8000/index.htm)) without researching thoroughly.  I offered less than half of the BIN price, and it got accepted.  Anyways, after reading some more, I found that some people were saying some of the keys likely wouldn't fit a standard Cherry MX board because the cap stems will be off-center.  I have two keyboards that I'd like to use the set on, because I think it's a very attractive set, but will these caps work on either the Poker II or the QFR?

Any insight is appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

It was $40 shipped, so I'm not too disappointed.  A little I suppose, because they would have looked great, but I'll live.

Is it because the cap stems are off center on the CTRL/ALT/WIN/MENU keys?

EDIT:  Here is a photo of it.

You have to be even more careful with PBT MY sets, in addition to the stepped caps lock, 1.25 mods due to the offset stem, spacebar... all of the stabilized keys may also be useless on MX boards as they can have integrated stab clips that don't work with Cherry MX stabilzers. $40 is steep for a used MY board with a lasered set. You could have probably gotten a G80-8200 for a similar price. Not only would that not have had the keycap issues, but you would also have gotten an MX board as well to use or harvest the switches from.

My wounds didn't need to have salt thrown in them, okay?  Haha.   :p

In all seriousness, I've at least learned that I need to research.  I will likely try to find an MX board locally to harvest the modifiers from.  If not, it's a small portion of my tax return that I don't have, and I know not to be over excited about things.
