Title: Anyone went back to MX after trying out Topre for a few months?
Post by: combataran on Tue, 29 April 2014, 11:24:51
I'm thinking of trying out vintage blacks on a KMAC and selling my Realforce 45g in the process. Thanks so much college budget.

Has anyone preferred their Korean custom or the other way around?

I got an LZ aluminum skin after owning my 55g realforce for a while. I like having multiple boards, because then I don't get bored. There's nothing wrong with having both haha. I'd say go for it if the price is right.

No desire to return to Cherry MX or Alps.

I switch it up between my Topre Typeheaven and IBM M2.

I switch pretty regularly now between MX and Topre.  At school it was between an HHKB and a CM stealth with greens, and here it's between my Realforce 55g and KMAC.  I like having both options available to me.

I like using my 55g Topre and my MX Red keyboard. I like an occasional change in key-switch feel.
And between my 55g Topre 87UB and 45g K65/MX Red keyboard, there is a broad difference in feel.

After using my RF 45g for the past month or so, i have not had the desire to replace it with a cherry mx board. I sold all my mx boards actually, but I plan on making a new one soon just for variety. I imagine that I'll be using my RF primarily however.

After using Topre for a while the only MX switches that I like using now are vintage blacks, and reds.

All switches are fun! I've tried 45g & 55g Topre for a while, but since I can't afford to keep every keyboard out there, I settled on Cherry pretty much. I really like vintage blues for typing and 62g lubed blacks for gaming. Blue Alps are also a wonderful typing switch.

Topre feels great and all, but I can't fall in love with it like the modded boards I have.  Plus, the bottom out on topres can be harsh when you're not in the right feel/mood for it.

Rotate frequently and make sure you're having fun is all I got for you.

When I first tried Topre, I thought I had been converted for good.  However I went back to MX after only a couple of weeks.  Strangely, I convinced myself that I still preferred topre, but I just liked using all my customs.  I realize now that I was simply brainwashed.  HHKB is currently very popular on Geekhack.

I love my 45g Realforce.  It is incredibly well made.  I like the sound of Topre more.  However, I think the MX is just a better switch.  I prefer the browns.  They are light and smooth, and I find them pleasing to type on.  Most importantly, I'm much faster on the MX browns.  I also usually end up bottoming out pretty hard on the Topre, where the MX can be used without bottoming out.

I did. I used my Realforce for a little while, but went back to MX Red/Blue. Mainly due to the size of the Realforce, but still. Now that I have a 60% Topre I don't go back to MX very frequently, but I do like to switch things up a bit from time to time. I think it's a bit boring to limit myself to just one switch type, so therefore I rotate through three different types of switches: MX Blue, MX Red and Topre 45g.

Liking what I'm reading in this thread.  Seems like people share the same feeling I have: All switches are great and Topre isn't the god switch, it's just a great switch to have in your library that will enhance your feel and knowledge of other switches.  Gotta catch Em all!

Love this place when you guys aren't trolling or being elitists :)

I have a KMAC with 62g blacks and it has replaced pretty much all my other work keyboards of all switch flavors including Topre.  I rotate out every now and then, but I find myself coming back to the KMAC after a few weeks.  It's by far the best-feeling and best-sounding keyboard I've ever encountered.

This. Although the bottoming out feels quite 'dampened' for me on my Topres, it is indeed quite harsh. Plus, somehow I miss the more pronounced sound of the springs from my Browns, but that's just me I guess.

A data point for you: I own a Topre 55g for over a year and I have forced myself to use it continuously in the first two months to learn the ins and outs of this switch. While it is still in my rotation, I think these days I use it about one day a week and perhaps two days a week max. My problem with Topre is that it can get boring. Yes, it is a very good switch and I enjoy it when I am in a good mood and want my fingers to lightly dance on the buttery cups. However, on some days I really want to slam on the keys and "express" myself (either my frustration with work or maybe my excitement while coding up something neat). For that purpose, Topre is definitely not expressive enough for me and that's why I always keep at least one heavier clicky keyboard in the office, either a MX Green or an ALPS clicky.

So yes, I would not miss my Topre /too much/ if I really have to lose it tomorrow.

I tend to alternate between BS, MX black and Topre at home, and use MX green at work.

I enjoy all of them, and using a keyboard with one type of switch only makes me doesn't make me dislike another, it sort of just makes me enjoy the variation.

I tried Topre for a few minutes, then went back, does that count?

Yes, yes it does.

Topre is my favorite switch by far, but I still find myself wanting to get some MX Korean custom just for the fun of collecting and variety. Also, I don't have any problem gaming on Topre but it's mediocre compared to reds or blacks, which is another reason I want an MX board again.

I use both..I'd hate to have to pick one.

Typing wise Topre is just more enjoyable to use for me...  Gaming wise I love Cherry...

If I had to pick just one it'd be Cherry..but not because I like it better but because I like it for typing and really like it for gaming whereas with Topre I love it for typing but dislike it for gaming...

I'm just glad I don't have to pick just one..

Topre is my favourite swtich by far, the 55g is heavenly and the HHKB is great as well. Never use my MX boards. That being said I wouldn't mind a Korean custom as well :)

I used a Realforce 45g for a while and switched back to my buckling spring SSK now. At work, I use MX brown.

I still like the Topre feel, but it mostly reminds me of rubber domes, and I sometimes think that it might just be the switch for a younger generation that grew up with and is subconsciously used to rubber domes. I grew up with mechanical type writers.

55g linear switches are all the mx ones i use after topre. I use both about the same but tactile and clicky just feels wrong and gritty.

I can't really go back to Mx Blue since I've tryed Topre. They feel really like they're missing something. And I'm not even a great fan of Topre...

Well, actually maybe it's because my only Mx blue board is no that awesomely built (Noppoo choc mini), so it's only logical that I prefer Topres in the great quality Realforce over Mx Blues in the Noppoo.

For Mx Black I guess I'm ok :), even though I don't use them often (not a lot of gaming here). They still feel solid and actually really different than Topre so for me it's not even comparable.
That said, if I was in OP situation I'd keep the Topre (if I have only one board, I want it to be tactile!).

The only switches to which I can always return are BS.

I used a variable-force Topre Realforce at work for a few months. I found the 55g keys to be too stiff and I did not like having to bottom out.
I prefer stock Cherry MX Clear. They are just as tactile but I don't have to bottom out - in fact, I therefore find them to be much softer: key stiffness is not just about actuation force!

I tried the HHKB for about a month after what seemed like everyone on here swore by them. I just couldn't like it. I love the sound of Topre, but the feel and comfort is just not for me. I prefer my MX Brown switches. I am a lot faster and precise with them, and I don't need to bottom them out, like I did with Topre switches.

To me the HHKB is just a very pretty keyboard, and that's about it. Also the space bar being ABS always just kind of bugged me, especially at that price point. You'd think they would have bothered to make it PBT.
