Title: PC Mic for Gaming (Linux)
Post by: esko997 on Fri, 02 May 2014, 23:34:56
Hey all,

I'm looking to get a microphone for my computer for use with Teamspeak and playing DoTA. I'm running Arch Linux and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for microphones that work well with Linux? I'd imagine that as long as its a regular 3.5mm jack Linux shouldnt have a problem with it, but I've never had one before so I'm not sure.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I honestly use a clip on zalman mic, I bought it for $5, it's beautiful, if you had a headset just clip it onto the wire and you're good to go, it's actually really high quality for such a cheap little microphone.

I ended up getting one of those Blue Snowball USB mics. Will reply to the thread tonight when I get home and let people know if I can get it setup/working.

Curious about the quality as I was debating getting one of these, however $5 mic suckered me in.

Hey so for those interested, the Blue Snowball Mic works great on my Arch Linux setup. Just plugged it in, turned it on in alsamixer, and bam -- working!

i use a modmic version 2.0,
Currently they are getting in their 4.0 and it looks like it is compatible with linux but might need abit more investigation, warning it is not a cheap option.

But the quality i have had from this mic is amazing, i use mine for gaming mostly league with friends and just general chatting. Since i have had it i have had no issue where multiple mics failed in the past.

The Blue Snowball is a pretty great little (well, big & unwieldy) mike.  The only real complaint I have with it is that mine is very very quiet, so I have to be all right up in it when I talk.  Of course, you generally should have a mike positioned right there in front of you, so it's not that bad as long as you have a pop filter.
