Title: Steelseries 6GV2 enter key keycap?
Post by: Pinder on Sun, 04 May 2014, 15:15:35
Hey there!, i am a proud owner of the steelseries 6gv2 and well earlier today for some reason i really wanted to buy some new keycaps however i couldnt find a single set that would fit the enter key for the 6gv2 (also the right shift key) In the end i decided to just pant all the keys with black paint however i think i used really crappy paint and now its starting to rub off. So does anyone know were i can get some keycaps for the 6gv2?

NOTE: MUST BE IN UK.

EDIT: NOT LOOKING TO BUY REUSED/STOCK KEYS FROM PEOPLE. LOOKING FOR FULL COLOURED KEYSETS

I have a stock set of keys for a 6gv2 you can have (except, I think, F9). I take it you want the full set or did you just want the enter and right-shift? PM me anyway if want them. Meanwhile I will dig them out and see whats in there.

Ok, yes I have a full set barring the Num Lock, which in this picture is wrong profile and looks like from a crap bag. Let me know what you need.

edit: note - this set came from a keyboard that was snapped in the middle and it looks like some of the middle keys are slightly bent, like the F10 I can see the stem through the top

Someone asked much the same question about custom caps for a steelseries. I don't think there are that many options for full sets, except maybe where they are made perhaps.  - http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=29208.0

You can get fairly close with standard sets, heres the WASD compatability chart, thats as close as you are likely to get

There were full engraved PBT sets floating around Taobao a while ago. Otherwise, you're out of luck with that key.

the backspace key is wrong there - the UK Steelseries layout has a stupid x1 backspace keycap :-/

sorry, I thought SteelSeries used the same layout for all their mechanical keyboards - this is my SteelSeries 7G UK ISO layout, and as you can see it has a stupid backspace.

dude that sucks :c. I dont see any advantages of the layout you have, i don't think ive ever used the R-shift on my 6gv2 xD

Yup. 7G has ordinary 104/105 key layout w/ a big-ass Enter, while the 6G[v2] has moved the backslash key for no apparent reason. Some vintage keyboards at least had it on the other side of the Shift key, making it easier to touch type (although harder to do stuff in TeX)...

Yeah it's kinda why I don't recommend SteelSeries mechanical keyboards in general.

It's like their layout is out there to screw you over.  It's like it's not ISO or ANSI, it's a weird blend with a weird enter key that's not consistent with anything.

>___>

Otherwise yeah the only thing I can think of is that a while back they used to have PBT sets specifically for SteelSeries keyboard on ebay.  I don't see them around anymore though.

If I ever ended up with a SS keyboard... I would have a new plate cut as the PCB does support a proper ISO layout. I have no clue why the **** they don't use it. As it is now, a standard ANSI enter does fit and you can rig up some way (use a MX compatible slider from a domes keyboard for example) to attach the 1.5 key that typically goes above enter on ANSI layout as a space filler.

Ivan beat me to it. We had this discussion elsewhere recently and a few ideas were suggested. The PCB supports ISO but you'd need a new plate. You can use an ANSI enter but you'd need to rig up a blank above it somehow.

The only other thing I can think of is perhaps after adding the ANSI enter you could cludge an MX switch into the hole where the \ should go, supporting it somehow. Once that's done, it might be possible to wiremod it in as the \ switch? I've not done any wiremodding so I might well be wrong on that one. I think there's space though, as there's a large hole in the PCB underneath for the pins/wires etc.
