Title: update pics the MEGATRQN keycap

Open-Source 3D Printable Robot Face Keycap

EDIT3: I ordered the latest revision in a few different materials from shapeways, ultra detail is still the best but I really like the feel of the sintered steel one. for some reason all three of these fit very tight (my first two orders fit snug) and will require some sanding / scraping on the inside of the stem.

here's some ****ty cell phone pics http://imgur.com/a/4zJRJ

old updates:
More
EDIT2: here's some pics. http://imgur.com/a/xIHLo I'm not sure why it printed differently from the first one, maybe they printed it differently or something.
EDIT: ok here it is, go nuts!. https://github.com/counterglitch/MEGATRQN
if you're too lazy to download the model and submit it to a printing company, you can just order one here. Let me know if there are other materials you want. http://www.shapeways.com/shops/megacap *note: comission is set to $0.00

be warned: it's a pretty ****ty model. i did what I could but I'm not an artist or modeler.

also, here are some shots of the alpha version with some red nail paint on it

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first artisan cap I ever saw was a v1 brobot and boy did I love em from first sight! Having grown up with the transformers franchise, it was super cool to see something nostalgic and bad ass as part of my 'new hobby'.

But I never liked Optimus Prime much... So here are some potato camera teasers of the new MEGATRQN cap:

Details about the MEGATRQN cap:

1. Obviously, it's 3d printed. Shapeway's ultra detail is pretty high resolution. Probably SLA but I don't know much about 3d printing
2. The cap body is directly stolen from im3rdo (well, he posted them free here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/85bju0itsc0uq8d/yZ9DaKIgF4)
3. The cap head is directly stolen from some random megatron model I found somewhere on the internet
4. The pictures above are of an alpha version. The beta version will be coming in two or three days.

Anyway, I'm gonna release the STL on github or something after I see the beta version. Feel free to use, modify, profit from, misuse, and abuse the design once it's up. I can't claim any IP anyway, this is just two existing things smashed together (took me like four hours!). Want to make a silicone mold form the 3d printed part, cast some in badass colors, and sell em? go ahead. Want to modify the design? (PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE IT BETTER ONCE IT'S UP I REALLY SUCK AT MODELING) go ahead. I would love to see topre version.

Edit: here are some better pics of the alpha version. Best I could do with crap camera and crap lighting. Threw some red on it just to see how it would look.

Issues to note:
Rear of head sticks too far over the back.
Eyes have a hole near the tops... Some kind of artifact from my shifty modeling.

Beta won't have these issues.

Count me in....I know how long 3D printing takes....will this be used for a mold? or will all caps be done using a 3D printer?

can you elaborate? I really don't know anything about 3d printing. Shapeways ultra detail material goes down to 0.1mm. Or are you asking a question about the model / skp?

It would be cool to see a non-transparent version for boards without backlighting.

The translucency is due to the material selected when I had shape ways print it. It's their highest resolution offering.

I will probably paint the beta version. Solid colors really show off detail.

Then I wouldn't be sculpting my keys by hand :)  The opportunity to practice a craft is lost.

Like I said.  This'll give any joe, ****, or harry the means to copy pasta some 3D models and make a key.  I truly picked the wrong time to get into sculpting :(

3D modeling and printing surely gives jerks such as myself the means to make something that we want, but the hand-sculpted caps have a... je ne sais quoi? The organic feel of the shapes and the detail that can't be attained with FDM (or even SLA) printing really make a difference.

Making multiple mock-ups of a cap via 3D printing, then settling on a final design is how Bro Caps made the V2, isn't it? If you wanted to, you could even use a 3D print as your master for a mold. Creating custom caps via casting still has the advantages of better detail, less cost for volume production, better and more varied materials, etc.

I'm of the opinion that there's room for a whole spectrum of methods.

edit: Binge when are you gonna make some topre fn caps i need a bingecap+fn key for my new HHKB!

Received a purple transformer cap from shapeways today, visually its spot on but the stem for the mx-stem is entirely too tight, I had to use my dremel tool to open the "port" so it would sit properly

you can see in this pic that it is sitting level with the other caps, but when I first stuck it on the stem there was a visible gap where you could see the plate under the keycaps

that's what I used, do note that the stem "port" may not fit properly and you may have to file it open some

Probably only works right for ultra detail or those that are polished.  You might be able to get some improvement with acetone vapor, depending on what the material is.

Make sure you don't print this in metal without modifying the design, I've been trying to find a file that will fit into the stem for weeks and I've now basically just given up, it's sitting around as a decoration.
