Title: Anyone know a software/tool that can tell me what prompted this message?
Post by: Voixdelion on Tue, 20 May 2014, 01:54:10

"You must restart your computer to apply these changes"

I hate getting that message when I haven't actually made any changes that I want to apply... or at least not on purpose.  I'm thinking there must be something that can tell me what changes are waiting in the wings for this reboot so that I might know if it ought to be interrupted or altered before that happens (and rather surprised that ther isn't some option built into that message/command to cancel said application by design, but whatever...)

Having a cat around a keyboard and a computer that is nearly always on can cause some issues like this, and I would like to know if it is kitty's doing or some potential malware that snuck by or just a bad key sequence that triggered something or what...

Anyone know of such a thing (that works on windows 7 64 bit) that could help clue me in to what is being changed?

Do you have Windows Update on auto-update? That could be your problem, same deal with any antivirus software you might be running, as well as some Adobe updates. I turn auto-update off on every program and just make it a habit to do it myself once a week or so.

If that's not the issue I would consider restoring your OS to a previous version.

Heavens NO!  I turn off anything that calls home without me doing the dialing first...  THAT is the first thing I shut off on any new install  =)

And I would consider doing that restoring thing... provided I had the option to do it.  System Restore tends to be the second thing I shut off for lack of storage space  - it's an old habit that I guess I can relinquish now that they sell HDD's in the terabytes, though...

I got that message once when I plugged in a keyboard.

Probably background updates.

Hmmm - You know, now that you mention the keyboard thing,  I guess it could be a driver thing, maybe... Just attached a few different things to various USB ports, so I supppose that could have done it if the message popped up behind other open windows I was actually working in when I did that...  That does actually make me feel better about that message in general though, as that is a plausible explanation.

Too bad that message is not more specific though - it WOULD save me a lot of wondering.
