Title: LEGO System
Post by: intelli78 on Wed, 21 May 2014, 20:43:44
Did you play with LEGO as a kid? I bet most GH members did; LEGO has a lot in common with the keyboard hobby. Collecting, building, etc.

Some of my favorite sets as a kid:

My parents didn't had money to buy lego when I was a child, it was kinda a luxury toy - I had just a few that I won from some friends.
Today I'm playing with the NXT and I'm quite happy with the experience. It's viral, some friends at work were asking about this toy to buy for their children.

Did you not play with LEGO as a kid and the entirety of your collection is from the last year?  Just curious.  :)  I'd love to see photos regardless if you feel like posting.

I love LEGOs, and I'm excited to start playing with them with my niece and nephew once they get to that age.  :D

I never got much as a kid probably since they always seemed slightly expensive. But a friend of mine had one of these (http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0247/4507/products/wet_tub_1.png?v=1372818861) chock full of Lego. I will never forget digging through it (& eventually dumping it all out) and having spaceship building competitions with his two younger brothers.

I have the bed set that matches the space shuttle lunch somewhere at my parents house.

Here are a few of the ones I fondly remember:

http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/6195_Neptune_Discovery_Lab_/_Aqua_Dome_7
http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/6081_King%27s_Mountain_Fortress

good times!

Back when I was a child, LEGO is so expensive that not many family can buy for thier kids, even the China fake brick things were a dream for every kids. I had only 2-3 real LEGO set as gifts from my dad's business friends, the rest that my mom bought me were all Chinese replicate :/

Love Lego but unfortunately, much like China, Lego was always extremely expensive in South Africa (imported/bad currency). I was lucky enough to get sets for Birthdays and Christmas but mainly because that was all I asked for :)

These are two of the best sets I ever got.

My pet peeve is Lego prescriptivists. :P  When I was a kid we called Lego bricks "legos".  I don't see any reason to change.

Technically I believe it should be all caps too, e.g., "The children built a spaceship out of LEGO."

did that use the motorized rail?

the rail had a tooth-shaped center track, and the 9V battery connected to a gear box driven by an electric motor.  The track had a variety of adjustments you could switch to make the monorail take different tracks, or change direction/reverse the electric motor.

To me that is one of the greatest things about Lego, I have such great childhood memories. I was also so keen on the pirate ship but had to decide between that and the pirate island and I went with the Island. I don't think I have ever been happier then when I received Lego as a child.

The Monorail Set (http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/6990_Monorail_Transport_System) was my fave too!  I received it as a birthday and Christmas gift from my grandparents.  As a kid, it was mind-boggling how many parts it had and how big the box was.

I received it on a weeknight but didn't have time to start building it that night.  I reviewed the entire manual before bed and woke up early so that I could get some build time in before the bus came to bring me to school.  Man, those were some awesome memories.

From what I can remember I had these as a kid;

DEM MEMORIES
Though, fun story... I got that pirate ship for Christmas one year and my mum spend all the following day building it with me(for me), only for the following day my jelly brother to push it off my window ledge onto the floor smashing it into a million pieces and loosing some vital ones. It was never remade :(

BTW, I will be at an event at Legoland (http://www.legoland.dk/en/Plan/Events--Concerts/StarWars/) in the middle of June as one of the "extras" in costume.

Wow, haven't thought about Bionicle in a long time.  I never owned any as a kid, but my first "real" job was working on this Bionicle game for Gameboy Advance.  I implemented the AI for a lot of the enemies in this video. :D
