Title: Trusted rubber domes?
Post by: juguerre on Fri, 23 May 2014, 10:37:32
Ok guys, is the end of the world. Cherry switches are gone. No topre , not alps,  not mechanical switches at all to bring hope to human being.  Just rubber domes every where...
So what would be your kb choice in that desperate world?

I'd probably go with one of the microsoft ergonomic models.. 2000, or 4000.

Microsoft Ergonomic 4000. It's my backup board at work in case I forget my Filco at home.

I used that board for years, it fits my hands nicely. I would love to have a board with that shape with mechanical switches. Which is why I really want a G80-5000, it's the closest mech board I've tried to the 4000.

Do scissor switches count? TypeMatrix 2030, and I'd try to get higher-quality keycaps for it... somewhere. Otherwise, I'd like to try some programmable Cherry G86.

I don't really mind BTC 51xx (w/ Cherry MX-compatible keycaps), old KeyTronic, Dell QuietKey, Silitek MaxiSwitch and possibly some others, but the layout! There's no way I'm going back to full-size AND winkeyless AND staggered layout. Maybe MS Natural Elite or Goldtouch Adjustable Keyboard...

Probably going to be considered blasphemy but if I had to go back to rubber domes I would probably pick this board. I used one for years and always liked it.

Apple Wired keyboard for me. I used to use a Dell QuietKey at work. The Dell QuietKey isn't so quiet so I use the Apple Keyboard out of courtesy at work. I actually like it a lot for being a chiclet keyboard.

I'm typing on that model now :P

I think I've been using it for like 10+ years.  It's super shiny, but only the W and D lettering is slightly worn off.

Cherry G86, Cymotion, etc. Spill resistant, ludicrously smooth, highly tactile.

The best thing about this keyboard is that when it's first connected to any Windows 7 Ultimate setup everything is installed upon restarting the OS.  The volume switch is recognized and working perfectly and even the email button prompts outlook express to start up.

I just wish DELL stuck to making their keyboards in Thailand so you could imagine the quality that could easily match anything Realforce could make even now.

Haters gonna hate I'd probably rock an apple chiclet keyboard.

I used to love those, but I haven't used one since I switched to mechanical so I don't know about now.

Maybe NMB RT-6600 series if Fujitsu HHK has already taken by someone.

NMB and Fujitsu were known for good/decent rubber dome keyboards here in Japan. Some people prefer those rather than Topre. Occasionally I can find their nice keyboards at libraries or public facilities, and some times I'm shocked at fact that they feel better than my HHKB :p

Dell Quietkey for sure. The slider-over-dome version, not the cap-is-also-the-slider version.

The domes on the Sidewinder X4 aren't the best, but it has something higher than 6kro, relatively low energy backlighting (red), and for gaming purposes the domes are nice (for a 40 dollar RD board).  Macros, too, but I never used those.

So this would be my recommendation for gaming board if all mech go away somehow (wat)

It's a scissor switch board.  Definitely one of the better non-mech boards out there.

It's definitely RD (took mine apart).  But I can see why some might say it feels sort of scissor switchy?  There's not much travel on it which I actually liked for gaming.  Maybe I'll go lube the caps on mine and see if anything cool happens lol.

Much more helpful there.  I had one and I thought I remembered it being scissor switch.  I guess I was wrong there.  It still is one of the nicer non mechanical boards out there since it does have a little of that scissor switch crispness.

I'm definitely interested in the result, because I'd like to do that to other RDs eventually.

I'd used an old X4 and it was horrible. In a year, keys were scratchy/sticky.

Otherwise I think Razer Arctosa feels pretty similar too, and to be honest I don't mind Apple Chiclet either.

These were the shiz. Had two die on me though. One was at my house and the other was at a past job. They were from comepletley separate batches and bit the dust with in weeks of each other--was weird.

The dell quiet key for sure though as others have said. They are cheap to buy so when you where one out just buy another.

Also I've typed on a cherry corp RD and it was very acceptable to me. The model # I forget currently.

I had a KeyTronic Lifetime Series keyboard.  One of my fav rubbers I've used.  The keycaps love to shine after being used for a while tho but I like the looks of well used abs for some reason lol Sadly when I tried to take apart the keyboard, I broke the tabs so it wouldnt close anymore :(

That... space... bar...

For me it's the Logitech DiNovo. It was the first keyboard I realized made a difference in my computing experience. I tried a keyboard after it (way before knowing about mechanical keyboards) and was utterly unimpressed with anything else besides it up until I got my first mechanical.

It was way ahead of it's time in terms of style. Can you believe that beauty is almost 8 years old?

Damn I've got that one packed away, a really nice scissor switch with ultra subtle back lighting that worked nicely at mid-night typing  :thumb: .

Only downside it was extremely thin and easily twists on a flat desk when typing but I'm a rock ape hence when I type some keyboards buckle under my fingers.  Maybe why I like all metal housings for keyboards because it then becomes more durable when I use it.

lol I didn't notice any issue of it being thin, I think it already has a metal plate in it to keep it sturdy.

Yes. The black Macintosh-inspired styling is quite dated now. Anodized aluminium, fingerprints everywhere on the glass surface. But the amber LEDs under the black glass are quite cool. Very good scissor switches.
