Wasted 3hrs trying to post a thread that was very long and contained several pictures but kept timing out and now I don't even know if it timed out again or if it had gone forward for moderator approval. I don't even know how to reply to other people's threads because I don't see a reply button. Was there some mass abuse of the good old system of yesteryear?
-
Are you sure that's not a technical problem with your browser? Works fine here.
The reply button is at the bottom of each thread-- there's a series of "reply, watch, notify, mark unread, etc." or if you just want to add to the end of the thread, there's a quick reply box at the bottom. If you press "Quote" next to the individual post, it usually pours the quoted text right into the Quick Reply button. It's possible, because this is a little gimmicky and script-intensive, it works strangely on edge-case browsers or if you have JavaScript disabled.
I find the Godwin-baiting title sort of odd. Do remember this is not the only comparable forum in town-- if you don't like it here, there's always Reddit. There were some big issues about a year back with the site being hacked and several panicked database and software tweaks, so the forum may not be what you remember. However, the operators do seem to typically be trying to keep a reasonable level of discourse and community going on.
-
When I am posting a thread with multiple images, especially when the images are high res from the wifes Canon 7d, I have to upload them one at a time. Post the thread with one image, modify add another, etc. until all the images are posted. This is even with any single image or all images totaled being under the attachment threshold.
-
It might also depend on your internet connection.
If you have ADSL, uploading is usually much slower than downloading.
And if the connection is slightly unreliable (mine is terrible sometimes) and it drops out in the middle of a long, slow upload, when you reconnect the request might have timed out.
-
GH has a lot of technical issues that I'm sure are on the list. of things that need fixing.
Servers have been really strange the past few weeks.
-
were your pictures linked or uploaded? we have had issues with the gateway very recently. we have made a number of changes that we hoped would stomp out timeouts, but if you're still getting them, please PM your post with links to offsite images to me so we can continue debugging. thanks!

Why is Geekhack so restrictive? Feels like Nazi Germany up in here?
Just a tip, this isn't helpful. ^^
Consider asking for help before freaking out.
-
As a fan of Jewish Deli sandwiches I find the topic offensive.

It's because at least one of your pictures were too big. I run into that pretty often and there is not a good error message to tell you that was the problem. I figured it out on my own. Now I reduce the size of my pics before I try to post. Even then I copy the post to my clipboard befor I submit just in case.
GLHF now that you know the tricks.

I have confirmed through multiple sources that there are infact multiple neo-nazi's on the moderation team.
If you want the list of names, PM me.
Just post it up.

Thanks for the replies, I guess the community is still boss. Will try again one pic at a time. :-*

Good point, an error message that told me what was the problem would have stopped my stupid aperage.

Fulfilling Godwin's Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law) in the first post. Congratulations!
I'm guessing this thread is going to be locked soon.

Following this makes me feel like the internet is just one big discussion in and of itself, which is why we see the words Nazi and Hitler appearing so much. Soon, the internet will have no other words but those two.

The guy at McDonald's refused to give me a free ketchup packet -- I swear this is just how Hitler rose to power.

Free? What do you think we're running, some Socialist restaurant? You pay for your ketchup like everyone else.

I guess we're not Nazi Germany all up in here? For reals?
Dude, I'm flying on air.
[attachimg=1]
Ok, enough -- please don't reduce everything to Nazi Germany in the future. Go forth and keyboard.

I'd like an official retraction and twitter apology campaign for the Nazi Germany characterization. How about it OP?
-
Huh? I said the community is good, but my point that the site's rules are ridiculous is still valid. None of the gun forums I go to have near as much restrictions on selling weapons that can and sometimes do kill people, when compared to here. Since when did hackers become "the man"?
Actually I take it back, at least this thread wasn't deleted by the first mod that saw it. I started with Nazis and ended with not Nazis, that is the opposite of Godwins Law.

Have never seen a site with half these restrictions.
maybe its the bleeding liberal in me, but i find it really depressing that gun forums have less classifieds rules than we do. as such i'm not coming up with a lot of sympathy.
plus you never compare anything to nazis on the internet. have you never heard of godwin's law?

None of these complaints have anything to do with moderation or rules.
Apology accepted.

Sometimes restrictions are biased, and are not applied in general. Is that a characteristic of fascism?

Would it be fascist to restrict convicted pedophiles from taking jobs that put them in close proximity to children? Those restrictions would be biased towards pedophiles. When people say 'fascist' I think: beat all the pedophiles in the streets with clubs on a regular schedule, even after they've been released from prison and paid the price for their crime. 'Fascist' to me, reads as a willingness to use force in an arbitrary (and often excessive) way.

I wonder from where the criminal analogy came from, or what did actually triggered it... Maybe the fascism reference burned some old, but still warm ashes.

Yeah, this place is starting to mimic some forms of fascism. So you have to be careful with what you post.
Even trying to post a review of something gets the freeze (maybe because I tried to do it). In fact I was going to do some photos and reviews of some keyboards and mice that came into my possession BUT NOW no way.
I have very little time to waste and when this forum starts freezing anything you post then you start wondering why even bother. As much as I love buying mice and keyboards you can not now demonstrate your likes/dislikes with them without getting the famous "Awaiting Moderator Approval".... aka - you've been stamped on for this posting :thumb: .
Amazing what constitutes censorship here on Geekhack. I suppose when fascism rears its ugly head far easier to stamp out any views then it is to accept any criticisms. Looking forward to getting this banned (myself included).

The process to express ourselves in written is not a simple one, and most of us have not mastered it yet. Thus, I think most of the time we write a different point of view of what we are actually trying to say, or different from what we are thinking. Therefore, we should keep hard feelings aside, and try to focus in the facts.

I was going to post a new thread, but I just saw this one and it seems others have similar sentiments about the forum.
I feel like the moderators here are extremely trigger happy when it comes to deleting posts. For example, I pointed out a simple resemblance of Bro Caps' "Rage face" cap to The Hulk, and every single post of mine in his thread was deleted, and nobody else's "off-topic" posts were touched. Then I simply asked why, and that post was deleted in a matter of seconds as well.
Are we really not allowed to post opinions here? Are you not trying to bring in new members and foster a community rather than push them away and give your forum a bad name? All it does is leave a bad taste in new users' mouths, and discourages them from contributing in a civilized manner.

Because I think HipsterPunks is a fantastic artist and I would have loved to buy one of his keycaps? How is signing up today any different from signing up 37 days ago? I gotta join some time if I want to buy a keycap, or join any group buys. Not sure why that bothers you more than someone with 30 clack skulls getting dibs on yet another one, but okay.
Anyway, I PM'd Bro Caps about it. I agree it's rather childish, but he seems to have a vendetta against me because he thinks I'm someone I'm not.

why are for profit subforum mods allowed to delete posts? They should just be able to have a corner selected for them, but they shouldn't be able to control it to the extent of deleting anything that goes against them

To be fair you are acting exactly like anoxy who made it his mission to piss of brocaps as much as he possibly could for weeks on end before he got muted. And then you come along, named "User Was Banned". Not sure why it is surprising bro did what he did.
You are also talking about clickclacks, anoxy was mad because he didn't have brobots, as well as the fact that he could not get a click clack as well.
I also believe you are anoxy before bro pointed it out and deleted your posts, not much is going to change that for me. If you aren't then I apologize but it is too damn hard to think otherwise.

Clickclacks are arguably the most popular and sought after artisan caps around, so I'm not sure why it's so strange that I'm mentioning them.
It's a shame you think that because of my username. I would create a different account, but that's against the rules iirc.
I'm not trying to piss off anyone. You likely didn't even see my posts because they were deleted, so I'm not sure why you feel you have any valid opinion on the matter anyways.

Just checked the logs, bro caps deleted your posts. Not another mod.
NAZI GERMANY CHARACTERIZATION REPUDIATED

apology accepted
y'all are forgetting that i am literally hitler.

Just looking around and there's a poll, as for the rest I don't think it's that bad I have been on forums that where worse, and been a mod on a few but its pretty relaxed the only bit that annoys me is when a mod edits a post and leaves a message sometimes they come off a little angry, otherwise I have yet to have a run in with anyone for any reason, ohh well.
PS: Maybe I am completely misunderstanding but is it because you real name is Hitler Mkawa?

Not necessarily.
Even Nazi Germany had it's Hitler-free week. Things got better from there on.

Not trying to ruin the fun here, but as it turned out recently being a nazi was not exactly a good thing:

Why is Geekhack so restrictive? Feels like Nazi Germany up in here?
Fulfilling Godwin's Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law) in the first post. Congratulations!
I'm guessing this thread is going to be locked soon.
I always thought it means the conversation will eventually be about Hitler and Nazis. But since conversation has already started like that it's ended where it started.
-
As much as I love GH, I gotta agree. This place has some of the strictest mods of any board I have ever been on. Right up there with the Club Penguin mods :))
Never understood the reasoning. Calling a niche mechanical keyboard site a 'family forum' is utter bull****.
-
That's because you're only part of the 'family' if your nose is covered in poo.
-
The longer you are a member here, the more respect you gain. That's not weird at all.
It's just that the mods moderate too hard and too soon, instead of letting something unfold naturally. There's a time and place to enforce, and a lot of the times it seems like red state tactics are used to quell something that might upset the status quo. IE: [some of]the mods act like nervous cats sitting on a nuclear launch button at the slightest scent of drama
-
Someone should really make a Topre equivalent to this video...something like "Hitler finds out Topre stops making RealForce keycap sets"

If you get to be the Hitler of GH, I want to be the Winston Churchill of GH.
"Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." ~ WC, 4 June 1940.

Hey, y'all! Happy Independence Day!
I am not a mod, but...
This isn't a "family site" so much as there are a lot of <18 users here. Not Club Penguin volumes, but quite a few.
We don't want to bite newcomers or frighten them off. OTOH, we definitely are interested in according senior members with greater latitude.
There have been some truly terrible flame wars here. Too many "master races" in one place, I suppose. And putting out a camp fire is always easier than putting out a forest fire.
Finally, because it happens behind the scenes, people generally don't know that a LOT of back-and-forth discussion happens before any moderation or admin action is taken. Behind the scenes, this is a Libertarian forum with the least-restrictive limits we could think of that prevent flame wars, personal attacks, and fraud.
Contrary to his earlier post, mkawa isn't Hitler. But sometimes he plays him on this forum.
Again, let's all go light fireworks tonight (in your region). Here in California it is fully sanctioned. I'd be interested in the results if some of our Ukranian members did the same. (Please don't!)
The above was just my $.02, but it was an informed $.02.

Yeah, I know mkawa was only joking, but nobody should be compared to Hitler, even as a joke. And the master race jokes are in really bad taste as well. I just assume people don't really know what they are saying when they joke about that stuff. Hitler was not some guy who ran a keyboard forum with low tolerance for flamers and trolls. Hitler was a mass-murdering sociopath. Hitler was responsible for WW2 which killed 60 million people world wide.
However, if you want to know how many Hitler killed with specific intent with his death camps and execution squads, the numbers are as follows:
5.1–6.0 million Jews, including 3.0–3.5 million Polish Jews
1.8 –1.9 million non-Jewish Poles (includes all those killed in executions or those that died in prisons, labor, and concentration camps, as well as civilians killed in the 1939 invasion and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising)
500,000–1.2 million Serbs killed by Croat Nazis
200,000–800,000 Roma & Sinti
200,000–300,000 people with disabilities
80,000–200,000 Freemasons
Wait, there's more:
1–1.5 million political dissidents - All Germans
100,000 communists - All Germans
10,000–25,000 homosexual men - All Germans
2,000 Jehovah's Witnesses - All Germans
Still more:
3.5–6 million other Slavic civilians
2.5–4 million Soviet POWs
There are more, but I think you get the point. Plus, I'm getting depressed writing this, so I have to stop now. If you compare any forum moderator to Hitler, you are a monumentally ignorant @$$h0le is all I can say.

there are a number of eastern european friends i have with whom i can't even talk about khrushchev. needless to say, stalin is verboten. really, referring to people that you just don't like for whatever reason as analogous to any number of genocidal or otherwise mass murderers and war criminals is incredibly childish and not really the kind of thing i think is appropriate for any forum of discussion.

This is a great response Sam, but doesn't address the core cause of despondency. I just wish the mod team was open about what's going on at any given moment. As opposed to banning users and deleting threads, which seems to be the go-to option. That really ought to be the absolute option, not one of first and easiest routs out of a situation. You can't wield power like that and not expect backlash.
*And if you do, you should at least allow free speech.

Are you planning on getting yourself banned? We don't exactly randomly ban people out of the blue. There is wayyy more warning than is necessary for you to ask your questions.

Instead of uploading several images to a post why don't you just upload the images to Imgur and link them in the post?
That's what I do and it works great.

Look at all the broken external imagelinks in old posts caused by dead hosts or closed user accounts...
Uploading here directly ensures that all content will stay ...as long as we don't get another R00TW0RM disaster :/

there are people on this forum who have been directly affected, within one generation, by that geonicidal, homicidal maniac pol pot. i DO NOT appreciate offhand references to him and the khmer rouge, and am giving you guys your first and last warning right now to cut this out.
edit: disclosure. my father is based in cambodia and works throughout southeast asia with unesco, oxfam and a number of other NGOs to continue the century-long cleanup of the havoc wreaked by the extremely violent regimes and other geopolitical instability that has been prevalent in that region for the last 50 years. just as the european dictators did some of the cruelest things known in the history of mankind, so did the forces that came in and filled power vacuums in southeast asia. this is not a laughing matter to the kids that are still living in the fear that they will accidentally hit a 50 year old landmine. this is not a laughing matter to those who visit the museum of khmer genocide and its open-air mass skeletal graves with detail documentation on how each of these skeletons was once a human. this is not a laughing matter to the subsistence farmer who had their only sources of education and advancement destroyed by mass murdering idealogues. please don't hide behind the internet to say incredibly hurtful things to real people because you want to exercise the potential emotional impact of your "free speech".
