Title: [IC] - Geekhack zippered hoodie
Post by: Badwrench on Thu, 05 June 2014, 20:55:15
The proposed Zippered Hoodie (model# SS4500Z) is by a local shop called Independent Trading Company (http://www.independenttradingco.com/collections/mens1-all/products/mens-midweight-zip-hooded-sweatshirt (http://www.independenttradingco.com/collections/mens1-all/products/mens-midweight-zip-hooded-sweatshirt)).

"Our not-so-standard Men's zip hooded sweatshirt is made with soft, midweight fleece and generous fit for comfort. Features jersey lined hood, heavy gauge  drawcord with metal eyelets, #5 metal kissing zipper and 1x1 ribbing at cuffs and waistband."  Construction is 80% cotton and 20% poly, so there will be some shrinkage.   Of note though is that the fit on these is oversize, so you should be good with your standard size - it will be a loose fit.

The design:
I am going to keep this simple and to the point.  I will be doing the hoodies in black with a logo on the front left and back.

Here is a mock-up: (rear logo is done in Special Select font with black print on the black hoodie - shown in just off black to be visible for mock-up)
[attach=2]

front logo:
[attach=1]

This will be a short run GB and from there, the lead time is 10-14 days for production.  I am hoping to do these for under $30 (awaiting formal estimate from local screen-printer) plus shipping.

I think I'd like it more without the back logo, but I'd probably still be in for one.

Are you going to be at Keycon distributing these or how is shipping going to work? Also nice choice on the hoodies. I really love that 10oz Independent Trading Company hoodie. I've got one that was used by The Black Dahlia Murder in their band merch. I'll take a picture of it in a bit to show the fit. It shrinks but it's loose, oversized, and comfy.

The 10oz Independent Trading Company hoodie. (Black Dahlia Murder ****ing rules \m/) I wear a Large T shirt and hoodie normally. This is their L. It's oversized, so it runs big, even after it's shrunk down with a huge hood.

This is an XL American Apparel hoodie. (TeamLiquid <3) This hoodie runs small and the hoodie sizing is in XL. It's a bit more snug.

I love that TBDM hoodie something fierce. Really happy that it's being offered. Yes, I will be doing fit pictures like this for the T shirt buy (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59117.0) I'm running along side this. It's easier if Badwrench and I focus on different clothing; less organizational issues. Shoutouts to Badwrench. I gotta go fix my IC now :(.

Thanks CPT, the side by side to the AA hoodie makes the looser fit of the Independent very noticeable, perfect.

I also like that the arms are a bit looser, can't stand clingy long sleeves.

Depending on when this starts/ends I will most likely get one.

I wish I could buy one to wear at work but my arse would get beaten wearing this in public (especially where I am located).  Anything proclaiming your absolute 'geekiness' shall be violently put down with extreme prejudice.

Plus I'm a lot older now and still value having functioning arms, legs and knees  :thumb: .

I suppose for the youngsters out there it's great to own a real "Geekhack" hoodie.

Okay I'll buy one when you release these.  Make sure when we click paypal for payment that on your order site you have the standard donation ticket to give towards Geekhack  :thumb: .

That way this site gets a little revenue to run plus we use their logo on some apparel.   Also please provide some BIG sizes for Men and not only cater to small teenagers, I'm over 6 foot tall and am built like a standard rock-ape hence I need something comfortable to cover my carcass.

Make sure it happens.

Besides I'm looking forward to bashing any Geekhack haters out there personally  ;D .

I'm with Elrick on this one. I wish I could buy one too, but all the moose up here in Canada would beat my arse if I wore that in public. (Especially around here) proclaiming 'Geekiness' shall be put down with violent hoofing and and extreme beaver chomping.

EDIT: not the good kind of beaver chomping either.

I'll wear it in public only because I look like an old man hence most would take pity.  Those that think otherwise shall be sadly mistaken when they decide to bump me for what ever reason.

Just don't like standing down against anyone, except maybe for a Pig with a loaded Glock  8) .

Badwrench,

Would you happen to know if this hoodie is actually made in the United States?  So would want to buy an authentic USA made apparel because we already are drowning in PRC made clothes here in Convict Town.

Please let us know.

I am definitely interested if the shipping costs to EU are reasonable and not higher than the hoodie itself.

I'd love to combine this with CPTBadAss' Shirt. Maybe you could hand these over at Keycon so they can be shipped together?

^^ Ditto for me.  I'm definitely in for this, assuming there are rock-ape sizes available. :D  An "oversize" L or XL isn't going to cut it.

Would also strongly prefer no back logo.

Ok, seems like the overwhelming opinion is for no back logo.  What about a lower case gh done on the back of the neck where the hood normally falls done in black?

something like this, but with the special select font.

The SS series from Independent is made in Pakistan.  All the other stuff from them is made in China.  If this is a problem, we can go with an AA hoodie, but the price would go up a bit.

Hmmm, you may have the IND4000 then.  Same cut as the SS, but done in 10oz vs. 8.5.

As far as the back logo, that was my first thought as well, do the entire logo in black instead of orange for a stealth look.  (changing op to reflect this)

I thought there were still US companies making hoodies left in your country?  A shame because every Chinese made piece of clothing I had fell apart after 4 or 5 washes and general wear.  That is why we here in Australia buy heaps of clothes not because they're great quality or anything only because most of the clothes will tear and rip and the stitches will always come undone.

I still have some US made T-shirts from the late 80's that are in perfect condition even after hundreds of washes.  Hence my liking for anything USA made, because you guys use to have a high quality apparel industry that lasted for decades but now you gave it all up for cheap quality rubbish from the 3rd world (just like here in Australia).

If there are any USA made hoodies using US cotton then they're worth the price to me.  Because that hoodie would be around far longer than anything else bought at any local store.

Ok, I will have to talk to my screen printer on Tuesday and have him alter the quote.  I will have him do one for the IND4000Z from Independent and one for the Flex Fleece (f497) from American Apparel.  Note that the AA hoodie is an 8.2oz 50/50 blend of cotton and polyester.

Also, here is a quick sizing comparison: (all in inches)

AA:

I think it would be a pain to do everyone's ID individually due to the tooling costs. That being said, there's nothing stopping you from bringing the hoodie to a local screenprinter or embroiderer and getting it done. Most malls I've been to have a embroidering stall which would do work like that.

Max is 2XL for AA.  I will probably go with the Independent, as speaking for myself, I am not a svelte shape and the AA are just too slim fitting.  I went to my local shop and tried them on in a 2XL and it is too fitted for my taste.  Having said that, I am asking my shop if there is a minimum number of each brand as the tooling will be the same.

Ok, finally got a quote back.  Decided to go with the IND4000Z from Independent Trading Company.  I weighed these vs. the AA units and what people noted in this IC, and to me, the IND is the better choice.  The screen printer also agreed and prefers the IND hoodies over the AA units.

Final design choice is the geekhack key logo on the front left breast, and a blacked out geekhack.org in special select font in the rear.  Hoodies will be black.

Pricing:  54 to 71 units:  $31 after tax.  (add $3 for size XXL or larger)
There will be a price break if we get over 71 units - I just requested this # and will hopefully have it soon.
Shipping will be on an order to order basis based on location and there will be a 3% paypal fee.

Putting together a GB now.   :thumb:

I would be in for a medium.

Also, FWIW, individual name printing on shirts isn't that expensive. I managed to get some printed polo shirts done for about £20 each with four inch high lettering on the back for people's names. Also some embroidered shirts with individual sewn names were a bit more expensive.
