Post by: hashbaz on Fri, 06 June 2014, 13:20:43: The stigma surrounding the word geek is pretty much gone. There are still obsessive hobbyists of course, but being merely "really into" something like comic books, electronics, or science fiction these days is not as weird as it once was.

I don't really identify with the word anymore beyond calling myself a keyboard geek or an animation geek as a convenient way to describe my interests. The culture and shared experience surrounding the word has diminished as its use and acceptance has increased. I have hobbies and interests of varying intensities, and that's what matters.

as in ... Are you proud to be practicing Geekery that Doesn't get you laid... keyboards... pokemon... magic-the-gathering...

I suppose it did almost get me laid this one time I had to fix this female's computer... She was in awe at how quickly it was fixed when her (non-geek-n00ber) friends were of no help and let that problem persist for over a month..

Her bios had a bug, sound driver disassociates with device after pci reassignment..

People don't understand my obsession with computers and other electronics. My own family don't like me to spend enough time programming to actually write something worthwhile.
But, despite its difficulties, it is very rewarding knowing how much more comfortable your clothes are, having a hobby that allows you to earn more than one thing each day, and knowing how to write a program that can do whatever you want it to.
Also, I am me and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I don't think these comics portray the contrast of Geek vs Girl/Hipster...

The comic in reality hinges on UGLY geek + (any) girl that is prettier than that geek..

There is little reason for GEEK to get in the way of mating selection..

but.. Genetic luck is quite different...

My point is... Geek-ery is usually good, it's passion about something, and apparently, it is also something most EVERYONE has, or at least is capable of developing..

The reason a female would reject a male is primarily due to mismatch in perceived-physical-ideals...

Personality and intelligence within an income class do not differ significantly .. and so if looks weren't part of the bargain, then almost ANY male/female will be decently compatible...

However, it's shallow, due to general lack of interest in intellectual stimulation... and then there are people, who forget to shave or even shower, because we have more interesting things to do. Apparently, females are underrepresented in this group.

And all my friends are geek to some extent, yet when I start talking about keyboards they all look at each other and try to spot the one that made the mistake of starting the conversation, an we are talking of game developer and magic the gathering player geek level (many of my friends). And when they do, I take pleasure in pushing it as far as I can.

Anyone seen the french movie "Le diner de cons"? It's an epic movie where the general story is about some friends that organize a lunch with super geeks like a guy that knows everything about boomerangs and such and they make a contest of finding the "best one", without them knowing for sure. Well I would be quite good at being the best one and being proud of it, but I suspect many on this forum could outclass me. The thing is, I am not ashamed of it at all and there's no reason to and my philosophy is that if someone's bothered by MY hobby, then that's THEIR problem.

Not for me. Almost never used that word before. English is not my native language and there isn't even an equivalent word.

it's the same situation as black people now positively using the N-word..

Now nerdy dudes are positively using the G-word..

I am not saying the history and origin of those words are equal, I am merely saying the PROCESS going from negative to positive association is the same...

But... in general.. I do not like the common day floaty definitions of words.. Even though I recognize the fact that language is alive.. it creates many problems in communication..

Fingers crossed for the day when Everyone has a cyber brain implant.. which arranges our thoughts without neuro link compression.. So we can retain hard data tables that are identical in every person..

That way, we have a common set of definition which most generally everyone agrees with and updates OTA..

now you can geek out on monday with GoT talk.

my wifes latest water cooler is the saga of her phone. it fell into water like most phones do, we just put it in rice and hoped for the best, after a few days, it wasn't coming back.

so her topic was, its taking 3 weeks to get a response on replacing her phone.

at the end of the month they wanted 600bucks, everyone else who has dropped their phone got it replaced free or got a refurb, they decided to punish her.

oh we couldn't buy a refurb

we couldn't even use an iphone 4 we had lying around, even tho it's from verizon as well, had to be from company channels.

this finally got me mad enough to open up the iphone, now i don't **** with company equipment, cuz it's company equipment, but i've done this a lot, cuz tech support are a bunch of noobs or a call center in india.

i opened up the iphone 4s (i had a phone kit and special case ordered a month ago, just in case, since they use the special #1 star screw), i broke it down, checked all the wires, nothing. broke it down again, cleaned all the contacts (in case some rusted/stuck particles), put it back together, works. power buttons doesn't work, syri is dumber than a 2nd grader and the screen has a bit of static.

everyone thought it was stupid (even her mangers manger since no one could call her or reach her) to get a 1 month response and then on top of that to punish her when others have done the same. it was one day of "oh this company is ****" then the next day "wow it's great your husband is so tech savvy".

again all i did was break down an iphone, use a few qtips, i-alcohol and 2 hours, and it's pretty much the same praise you get when "glad my husband knows cars and can do an oil change".

IDK why they keep springing this feminist equal rights stuff on the agenda board... isn't it obvious that nearly everything a man makes is spent on women and children ??

Even if say.. a FEW men, big shot executives, not married, spends millions of dollars on hookers, fast cars, and blow...

The suppliers of hookers, fast cars, and blow, all have family, and when that money filters down... it feeds women and children...

Friends and family show a lot of respect for my hobbies, they do not understand them of course, but their respect is very welcome. People can call me anyway they want. I even enjoy being not just another co-worker, but "that" special one :thumb: .
I feel like this is a good description, I have never gotten any **** for it, people don't understand why I do what I do, but I'm usually the one that ends up helping them when they have problems :D
