Title: Has anyone experimented with keyboard LEDs (CapsLock, etc) for notifications?
Post by: Coreda on Sun, 08 June 2014, 05:10:05
So I remember seeing someone here post about a linux script they used to get their NumLock key LED light to display HDD activity, and also saw something on the Autohotkey forums (http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/9587-keyboard-led-control-capslocknumlockscrolllock-lights/) a while ago about using the CapsLock LED for the controlling lights.

Has anyone tried this or using such a script for notifications, such as email, etc? Seems like it would be a neat idea.

I haven't tried it, but as I pointed out, it could be a potential use for a Corsair RGB.
If you get an email from the boss, flash the numpad red. If a compile finishes flash the function keys green etc.

Especially for fully backlit keyboards this would be perfect. So many uses if there were some commands the lights could tap in to, and for gaming too as a kind of peripheral effect.

I guess I'm surprised using the default CapsLock/NumLock/etc lights for notices hasn't been more widely used, or known about. Having a thread of Autohotkey scripts for various things seems a good fit for a keyboard board :D

Brings a new meaning to Red/Green/Refactor.

Test results would be awesome.
