Title: What is the average age of GeekHackers?
Post by: ozar on Wed, 06 May 2009, 13:38:57
Hey guys, I've been curious about the ages of the members here at GeekHack.org, so how about picking your age from the poll?

I'm curious too but am too old and wise to vote first.

you know you can vote without having to post...and this isn't a public poll anyway

Yeah, I wouldn't have dared to make it public because too many might not vote.

Since I've revealed myself I'll vote a bit later.

Oops... a slight goober in the poll:

It should have been 20 and under at the top position, and 71 and over at the bottom position.  Didn't mean to leave out the 20 and 71 year olds.

Nearly seventeen, and I have two 1391401's that are older than I am. One by three years, and one by only a few months.

technically i think the groupings should have been "20 to 29" etc instead of "21 to 30" because people usually group themselves as "in their twenties" or "in their thirties" and the former grouping style works for that. Not that its important. I'm on the border between decades so I was glad to be able to choose the lower group ;)

I think there are a lot more 'older' people here than the poll indicates. Tho probably "in their twenties" will be the group with the most members.

I agree, if your keyboard is older than you, you are required to give it up. :)

Yes, you're right, the poll should have been set for teens, 20's, 30's, 40's, and so on.  Hopefully, we'll be able to get some idea of the age stats as is, because it's probably too late to adjust it at this point.

Before posting the poll, I was thinking that a large number of the membership might be past their teens, and that seems to be playing out as expected, but so far nobody older than 60 is participating.

Best way to do it is:

Under 18
18-22 (covers normal college age)
23-29 (covers the rest of the 20's)
30-39 (covers the 30's)
40-49 (covers the 40's)
50-66 (covers the AARP pre-retirement crowd)
67+ (covers the retired)

Oh, and I'm 21, and my oldest STANDALONE board is my AEK2, made in 1990-W50. But, I do own an Apple ][+ keyboard, so that's circa 1978-1982...

The forum index page shows that we have 293 currently active members, but only 44 have voted with their age as of this post, so we still have a ways to go to see how the age factor really works out.  I'm still wondering if we have any over 60 year olds.

If we're talking stats, this poll suffers from extreme volunteer bias. In order to get a true age estimate, we have to take an SRS of all Geekhackers, or maybe those who have a certain number of posts, if you want to exclude people.

I've already analyzed everybody's true gender (http://bookblog.net/gender/genie.php)!

That is interesting. I put in some writing of my own and was finally found out to be male, but not overwhelmingly so (about 80:60). Some of my drier non-fiction yielded about 50:50, and at first I pretty consistently got "female".

I guess being a native headphone and/or sensitive person will distort the result. Results with some text written by native speakers were much less ambiguous.

We're just trying to get the above 30 numbers up, as of right now the poll is 58% under 30.  A little younger than I expected getting into this.
It's not like it would be terribly surprising. The proliferation of PCs (not to mention home computers before that) produced a number of computer-addicted youths back in the early to mid '90s or thereabouts, and chances are you'd still get to know a decent keyboard at the time. That's much of the 21-30 and 31-40 groups. Therefore I predict that we'll see the age profile shift over time.

We have more folks under 20 than I expected though.

i love old stuff more every day. I swear I almost wish I had my record player and rotary phone back.
I spent 2 hours the other day trying out old style 'green screen' editors.
I long for the mechanical simplicity and tactical certainty of old technology. I totally understand xs's interest in typewriters.

Its not just the tactility and predictability and simplicity of old school gadgets; I really believe the psychological effects of using them are different too (I think they provide a more 'linear' experience, metaphysically speaking, as compared to the ADD experiences we get with gadgets today).

I'm really developing a distaste for gadgets today. My mp3 player's buttons annoy the hell out of me. I'd barely even call them buttons. They activate on their own all the time or I have to use the tiny hold switch while its in my pocket (and hope i dont hit one of the other buttons while i'm feeling around for the hold button). I hate the menus that pop up for everything. I hate the non-stop distractions and interruptions of the internet.

The other day I voluntarily (i think for the first time ever) turned off my tv and just listened to silence for a minute. Oh my god, it was like a revelation.  My thoughts focused, I felt better about everything, I got inspired about work.

I know i cant function without all the information and speed we have available today, but I want to start policing the way I access it - the UI is so crucial to the overall experience. And I definitely want a more mechanical, predictable, simpler UI to the contemporary world.   And that may well mean retro-fitting old school gadgets into new school work flows.  I can live with that. I hope more companies realize this and start producing older-fashioned tech once again.

I think its a neurotic obsession. But not in a bad way.
The model m mini is the epitome of keyboard design for me. Purely my opinion. All other designs
fall short when compared to it. Some come close, but there can be only one. In this case, its the model m mini.

One of my varied goals in life, is to get an NIB for each model year they were produced.
That could change at any time though. But as of now, not likely. It would be neat to have them all though.

If you assume these midpoint ages (16,  25, 35, 45, 55) and run the numbers (sample size = 51) I get an average age of:

30.235

Which makes me feel CONSIDERABLY better.

Yeah, its pretty stupid right now. That didn't stop me from getting my last one though. But I want to wait a bit for the mania to die down before I continue. I don't know what has happened recently to provoke such interest in them. Unless, of course its a bunch of geekhackers that are bidding on them.
You know, you can get a regular model m with numpad for a good price. I think I saw a NIB go for under 75 recently. I would think most people would prefer the num pad versus the spacesaver.

ya i have a nice regular one, love it. Its my daily driver. I actually use the numpad on it too. only paid 20 bucks for it.
Every now and then my RSI acts up tho. I've got a mouse bridge on my m right now (and actually its fine that way).  But thats why my thoughts drifted towards the mini for a moment.  If i were to get a mini, i'd get a blue cherry numpad separately and put it on the left side or something.
Title: What is the average age of GeekHackers?
Post by: bigpook on Fri, 08 May 2009, 21:43:00
Having a detached numpad makes sense to me. It allows you to get the mouse closer to the keyboard.
Back in the day, I had a HHKB lite and bought it for that very reason. I never liked having to reach past the numpad to get to the mouse. The ergonomics seemed out of whack to me.

I ended up putting the mouse on the left hand side of the keyboard to negate the issue. Of course, I just severely limited the type of mice I can use.
But I do have a fair collection of ambidextrous mice. I suppose though that since I mostly use numpad-less keyboards I could put the mouse back on the right hand side. But it turns out that having the mouse on the left side has its benefits. It allows me to use my right hand to manipulate the arrow keys and page up/down.
Not so much on the HHKB, but it works great on the filco tenless and model m mini.

Just pointing this out for the irony of a keyboard discussion hijacking an OT thread.  Carry on.

If I didn't mention it before, I'm 30.

Sigh, since no one else will admit it, I'm 56 and retired. Maybe keyboards are different for some of us old types. My first computer data input was via a rotary phone dial, in octal.

My first computer input was with toggle switches on a Data General 1220 to enable a  cassette player or a punch card reader.

The korean usually count using different way when they check their age. Usually, korean started with 1 age just after born, becuase Korean think the life of baby started from their mom's body. So korean is older then western people around 1 year old.

Anyway, I am in late 30th ages.

When a youngster uses an IBM 300PL in grade 2 and discovers that all other brands are crap after being enraged by HP, Dell, Apple, and everything else.

Personally, I'm surprised people go CRAZY over silly IBM keyboards, but not IBM computers. Yeah, using a fancy Model M on some crappy Dell or HP... the horror.

That is one of my goals in life. I do not want to be one of those guys who spends the rest of his life listening to the same music he was listening to in his 20's. Classic Rock radio is cool for short periods of time for the nostalgia factor, but I cringe when I run into people who still trying to have a Peaceful Easy Feeling while getting the LED out and are Back in Black with Bad Company every weekend.

I guess you probably COULD make something remotely similar with custom building, but it would take a lot of time, searching for the right parts, etc. I like having it all prebuilt with a cool stripey IBM.

ECC: Go into the Server motherboards section of Newegg. Problem solved.
Diagnostic LEDs: Some motherboards have that, and there's PCI cards that give that.
SCSI: Again, go into the Server motherboards section. Or look for "SCSI adapter."
SAS: See SCSI.
Side rails: Pick the right case. Spend 5 minutes reading case reviews.
BTX: Uh... that's debatable. BTX only made sense in a machine pumping out Pentium 4 heat levels, and fails miserably when the memory controller is built into the CPU, which is why there were very few BTX AMD systems. And now Intel CPUs also have the memory controller built in.

I don't care about ECC RAM, so I don't want to pay for it.
Oh, and BTX is no issue if you take a case with the PSU at the bottom. My Antec P183 does it nicely.

Really?  I'm pretty sure it's possible to be one.  However I do understand if the confusion is overwhelming for you.

Under 20 means:
age < 20

20 or under means:
age <= 20

21 - 30 means just that - 21 <= age <= 30.

As a result, there is no valid poll option for anyone who is twenty years old.

Old news.  Read the thread.  You're the third one to point this out.

I thought vBulletin allowed for the alterations of descriptions for existing poll options at any time (just not the addition/removal of the # of options once a poll has started).

Avg age at Geekhack is essentially unchanged at N=244.  29.71.

Although I have no evidence I suspect it's 14 at OCN.

It may not be 14, but the average mentality parallels a 14 year olds.

This is not a good thing.

Being young physically and mature (not "old") mentally is much better.  You get a much wider range of women that way.  From twenty-somethings that are tired of "kids" to cougars that can speak to them like an adult but can bang like a twenty-something.  It's really something to explore.

I really suspected 80% to be 30+ ( maybe late 20's ) based on the favoritism of browns I've seen. I also figure that the average age of gamers these days is late 20's to early 30's ( the NES generation )

For some reason the Browns strike me as the " More mature blues"  based on some opinionated posts in here.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that my interest in mechanical keyboards comes not from gaming. Honestly, I game very little and when I do it consists of Minecraft and WoW. No, I came here in search of a keyboard that's durable and comfortable enough to hammer out hundreds and thousands of lines of HTML, CSS, and Objective-C.

I'm still surprised at the large number of peeps in their 20's on this site. No way in my 20's would anything like GH have had my interest:
- it's not girls
- it doesn't fly at the speed of sound
- can't be eaten

In fairness, my involvement here is primarily (I have gotten sidetracked from time to time) the Kinesis project I've been monkeying around with for 2 years that FINALLY has 95% of the info/work done.

33 here, shocked by the 21-30 numbers, was expecting more in the 31-40 and 41-50 brackets.

16 seems high.

Yes, I agree. Perhaps I was a little generous. Maybe 11?
