For the fun of it, and mostly out of curiosity, if you had 100k $ (or whatever the needed amount of money) to spend a on DIY project of your choice, what would it be?
I'll start:
I would make myself an electric vehicle. I would start by finding a design that I like (probably a nice old school muscle car like a mustang Boss or maybe a Porsche 911). I would then make a tubular chassis (strong but lightweight) and a carbon fiber shell. I would then add an electric motor strong enough for racing, with a small pack of rechargeable batteries for day to day (I don't drive a long distance on a daily basis) and a slot for a non rechargeable battery pack (like a aluminum-air battery for example). Then I would complete all that's needed for the car to run, but the strict minimum to keep the weight very low. Then I would have fun with it!
That's the general idea anyway. I also would like to do the same but with a very casual car that could outrace some very sport cars :p
Until I find that kind of money, I will keep my Sentra :thumb:
So now it's YOUR time to tell us your dream project!

MASSIVE ****ING COMPUTER.
A PALACE OF KEYBOARDS.

MASSIVE ****ING COMPUTER.
x2. I'd only need about $20k for that though... the rest I'd invest in a couple new cars, nothing fancy.
-
I'd invest in a machine shop.
-
Assuming I can buy the computer without licensing a bunch of crap..
I'd also go for a giant computer .. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/oh-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862514)
But... if I have to pay licensing then,, you can't really get that much for 100,000...
I'd rather start an Ergonomics Business... (http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/k/a/kaminaonionplz.gif?1)

A dessert restaurant.

I'd love to open a restaurant, or a brewery. I love cooking, especially BBQ, you don't get many BBQ joints over here in the UK though :( A brewery and a chilled out BBQ place would fit perfectly. It has been something I've thought about for a long while, who knows, in the future, I may be able to do something like that.
EDIT:- Not really A DIY project, but I suppose making a brewery would be :D

open restaurant...
bbq deserts....

35% :-X

I'd invest in a machine shop.
^^This. Then I'd build my own car from scratch, engine included.
And make some nice electric guitars. And keyboards.

35% :-X
that's the lowest you're gonna get from a loan shark, and you'd have to probably know the guy, and had him at a family bbq to get that rate... (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/embarrassed3-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862502)
cuz you know, he's gotta know you've got enough loved ones he can kidnap and motivate you to repay him.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/uhuhuh-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862523)

Build engine from scratch.. that's neato... if not almost tooooo auspicious...
Machine shop is definitely cool.. CNC aluminum stuff for GH.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/embarrassed4-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862503)

Alright, we could open up a joint bbq brewery with savoury desserts. Go.

Same here. A CNC router, a 3D printer, woodworking machines, soldering & desoldering irons, and most importantly LOTS of space to build stuff.

And open it up to the public to create the most awesome hackerspace ever

I would buy one O2 or one ODAC to assemble ...
;D

I was sure the ODAC was already assembled, just not in a case :p

BTW, I am glad this topic has some interest since I like reading it a lot!
Keep the nice dream projects coming!
And I am very curious to see mkawa's dream open-budget project! Space shuttle construction is not out of scope here 8)

Well, I'm in the UK, you're in Aus, shall we meet in the middle? Say, India?! :))

Yep, CNC shop then design boards to rival korean customs. :D
-
Smart ForTwo 1.0 Brabus and modify the **** out of it, can't remember the kits name but it was a fast little ****er. Also rent a place to work on it, my bikes and such.
-
oh i forgot..
Fattie Nerd dude's fav fantasy... Taco truck.. !!(http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/full-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862505)
Though with $100,000 we could probably get a whole fleet of them..
-
Buy a house, rent it out....To superheros only of course trying to stay on the DL...You know how it is...

I'd start a YouTube channel that combines a world travel show, an exotic foods show, and a retro game hunter/arcade tour show.
We would release one video a week after recording in a country, so each video would be part of a series. Like we might have a month dedicated to hunting down retro games in Korea, I would travel to some PC bangs and arcades to check out some of the country exclusive arcade machines, retro game stores, try some of the local foods (yes, even the gross ones. gotta make folks happy,) and do a quick tour of some of the must sees and local attractions.
Each episode would be about 20-30mins long, and I'd have a co-host who would crack jokes with me and be generally entertaining. This would probably be more than 100k, but this is really more of my 'if I won the lotto and could do any job I wanted.'

so so
almost all smd but it's soooo coolll ....

Go over to enjoyclick and otd and buy everything on the market :))
-
I'd buy a clack or two.
-
I'd buy a large chunk of properties in Detroit and open a post apocalyptic theme park.

It could double as an urban military training ground

NY LA PA.. sigh........ no jersey in the works

6axis water jet and CNC BridgePort with all the attachment and goodies to make one piece stainless cases and trebuchets.
Remember, mechanical engineers build siege engines, civil engineers build targets.

So, nothing new then?

You sure it wouldn't be easier to cast a one piece case?
i recall trebuchets were supposed to be economical builds done from local timber.. otherwise.. transport cost would be insane
-
I want the case, plate, and top cover from one solid block of stainless in a tkl for factor, so the tight tolerance areas would still have to be milled, water jet, and/or laser cut. Plus I wouldn't want to try and cast stainless if that even is done.
The trebuchets I would be building would be smaller ones to throw golf balls about 300 yards.

Install a camp of heliostats in a remote town in Mexico to get the people living there some electrical energy.
-

IIRC, the gearbox was the biggest fly in the ointment. Replace that first. Then tune the **** out of it. End result would be more fun than a barrel of monkies! :D
-
I'd completely restore my W124.

I would pick up a late model WS6 Trans Am and drop a boosted 454LSX and spend the other 50k on upgrading everything else to make it an absolute freight rain for the "mexico racing league"
