Title: Hello!
Post by: jbm on Wed, 11 June 2014, 13:06:21
Hello!

I'm new to Geekhack but have been slowly going down the keyboard-enthusiast rabbit hole for a couple years now.

My first exposure was via a pair of Leopold keyboards with Cherry MX Browns. I like them a lot, but I also became interested in ergonomic designs, which led me to the TEK (Truly Ergonomic Keyboard) - my current main board.

Now I'm getting ready to build an Ergodox, which is what lead me here. I'm part of the most recent Massdrop group buy. I'm teaching myself to solder while I wait for the kit to come. So far so good but I haven't gotten to SMD soldering yet, which I'm a bit nervous about.

See you around!

Welcome! I've always been intrigued by the TEK. I almost purchased one off of Massdrop multiple times, but I always convince myself not to. I was super excited to get my ErgoDox, but that slowly dissipated with the time that it took me to finally receive it from the person I traded it from, and then more time to get it working. I realized I'm not a big ergonomics guy, so I decided to sell it. But I hope you have luck with your boards and you enjoy them!

Thanks!

I think the TEK is pretty great. I'd be completely happy with it if it had a about three more keys accessible from my thumbs or index finger.

The thing that tends to cause me discomfort when typing is heavy use of modifier keys (I'm a programmer and an Emacs user). For some reason shift doesn't bother me as much on the TEK as it does on other boards, but control does, and now alt is a pinky key too unlike on "normal" boards.

I still need to experiment with moving key around on the TEK, but even if it weren't an issue I'm still intrigued by the Ergodox enough to want to try it anyway.
