Title: Purpose of slot in plate for spacebar?

Can anyone help me understand the purpose of the slot between the switch and the stabilizers that is specified by Cherry for the plate cutout of keycaps longer than 1x3...such as the spacebar?

It's for crumbs to get in and annoy the **** out of you when you see them through your backplate.

It's for plate mounted stabilizers. You assemble the spacebar stabilizer first, then insert the bar through the hole in the plate, and finally seat the stabilizers in the holes. Then you can place the switch into the plate, and solder the switch in the PCB.
